John Richard Martin, William and Sarah’s second son, was born June 12th, 1837 and died May 18th, 1862. He was killed while serving in the Civil War with the Confederate army. He is buried in the Old Martin Family Cemetery. The epitaph on the back of his tombstone reads “This modest slab is erected in memory of John R. Martin by his brother and sister who loved him”. The rest of the inscription can not be deciphered except the last few words “. . . sorrow by his death”
