From Shirley Ann Manning Webb - several papers in Thomas' military file, one of which - from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin - describes his term of service in the Union Army:
"Thomas H. Asbury, late a Private in Company F of the 43rd Regiment of Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers was enlisted into military service on the 30th day of August 1864, by Captain B.F. Cooper at La Crosse, Wisconsin, for the term of one year, and was mustered into the military service of the United States on the 30th day of August 1864, at La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Thomas Asbury was born in Virginia. His place of residence was Geneva[sic-Genoa], Vernon County, Wisconsin.
Private Asbury was in the small pox hospital in Dechard, Tennessee, as of January 10, 1865, and returned to duty the 4th day of May, 1865. He was mustered out of the service with the rest of his company on the 24th day of June, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee.
The records further show that said soldier when enlisted was 27 years of age, had blue eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, was 5 feet 6 inches in height, and by occupation a farmer. - F. Gerald Ham, State Archivist, Madison, Wisconsin, July 20th, 1987."
NOTE: According to an affidavit by the Adjutant General's office in Thomas H. Asbury's pension file, he was retained as a nurse in the smallpox hospital from March 1, 1865 until May 4, 1865 when he was returned to active duty.
His pension claim was largely based on poor eyesight, partial deafness in both ears, and catarrh, all believed to be results of his bout with small pox.
General Service Record of Wisconsin 43rd Regiment Infantry:
"Organized at Madison, Wis., and mustered in by Companies August 8 to September 30, 1864. Left State for Nashville, Tenn., October 10. Attached to Defences of Nashville & Northwestern Railroad, Dept. of the Cumberland, to December, 1864. 3rd Brigade, Defences Nashville & Chattanooga Rarilroad, to March 1865. 3rd Brigade 1st Sub-District, District of Middle Tennessee, Dept. of Cumberland, to June, 1865.
SERVICE. - Stationed at Johnsonville, Tenn., guarding railroad and supplies October 15-November 30. Repulse of attack on Johnsonville November 4-5. Moved to Clarksville, Tenn., November 30, thence to Nashville, Tenn., December 28, and to Dechard January 1, 1865. Guard duty at Elk River Bridge and along line of Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad till June. Mustered out June 24, 1865.
Regiment lost during service 1 Enlisted man killed and 2 Officers and 72 Enlisted men by disease. Total 75. - "Compendium of the War of the Rebellion," Iconographic Collections, State Historical Society of Wisconsin."
