Family of Daniel Dillon & Mary Hickey

I have made every attempt to verify data in direct lines (and usually their siblings) at least back to 1850, or so. I am always open to input on corrections, additions and any other information of value in making this data as accurate as possible - Bob Couch, husband of Joan Lee (Dillon) Couch, great-great-granddaughter of Daniel & Mary (Hickey) Dillon.

A Brief History of the William Dillon Family
(Most of the information that appears below was handed down in the Joseph H. Dillon
family by Sydney Dillon to his nephews - the sons of Joseph H. Dillon - in the form of a letter
dated Sept. 29, 1941, and compiled by one of those sons, Lawrence Vincent "Larry" Dillon)

William Dillon was the son of Daniel Dillon and Mary Hickey.  "Daniel Dillon and Mary Hickey were both born in Ireland, probably in County Cork, as it appears they came to the Boston district in New England in the 1840's from Skiberern {Skibbereen?} in that county.  For a time Daniel worked on a whaler out of some New England port.  Later in the Pittsburgh district he was an excavating contractor and worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad near Pittsburgh double-tracking that line.  The panic of 1873, together with the loss of some 20 horses through an attack of the epizootic caused the business to fail for a while but he ultimately recovered.  He died in 1880 and is buried with his wife, who outlived him many years, in St. Mary's Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania." -  It would appear from the 1880 census records of Allegheny County, Penn. that Daniel and Mary had at least six children - William (born abt. 1849), John (abt. 1851), Daniel (abt. 1853), Thomas (abt. 1859), Timothy (abt. 1860) and Mary (abt. 1862), but there very well may have been more children, especially since a gap of about six years appears between Daniel and Thomas.  This same family appears to be in the 1870 census in Snow Shoe Township, Centre Co., PA and there are two other daughters, Margaret and Joanna, which would, in fact, fill this gap. - Bob Couch, Aug. 2001.

William Dillon, born in Massachusetts (believed to be Dedham) and Bridget Agnes Cooney (who seems to appear as Agnes in the 1880 census, and was born near Burlington, Vermont) "...were married in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania in about 1874, and had nine children (see photo below).  William co-owned the 'Lycoming Standard' newspaper in Bellefonte.  The Panic of 1873 bankrupted the paper, and he and his family moved to Altoona, PA where he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad.  He was later appointed the first station master at Braddock, Pennsylvania..."   - A William and Agnes Dillon appear in the 1880 census of Allegheny County, where William is listed as "Ticket Agent," along with their three oldest children, William, George (this is probably Sydney), and Mary B. (probably Bernadette or "Berna"), and a servant by the name of Jane Dawson.  I don't know for certain at this time that this is "our" William & Bridget Agnes Dillon, but they are the only ones who seem to fit with the known information - Bob Couch, Aug. 2001... " Both your Dillon grandparents (William & Bridget) died in Braddock and are buried in the family lot in the Catholic cemetery there (All Saints)That is about all I can tell you but any way 'Peace to their ashes' not forgetting their immortal souls.  In closing I may say that none of them was hung."
