Cora Little McKinley was my teacher in the fourth and sixth grades at Kinta Public Schools. I remember her very fondly. I also remember Elmer McKinley. I always perceived him as a very dapper proper gentleman. I believe that he worked at Farmers State Bank in Quinton when I was very small. After his retirement, I recall that he was a rancher. I owned an old tractor and brush hog when I was in high school and mowed pastures for him around Kinta when I was in the 8 through 12 grades before I left for college. I visited Cora once at the Stigler Nursing Home after I had graduated. My father taught vocational agriculture at Kinta High School during those years. Fond memories of fine people in a different era.

Our McKinley grandparents lived near Honeygrove and Paris, Texas for a few years after their marriage. My father (Clarence) was born in Paris. I don't know where Frank was born.

Grandfather made the "run" in 1889 and staked a claim north of Ardmore, Oklahoma Territory, in the Arbuckle Mts., and moved up there, but didn't live on the claim the specified period of time required by the rules to be the owner. The family moved to east central Oklahoma and Grandfather contracted a section of a railroad bed, (Midland Valley R.R.), in the year of 1900.
This dirt work was done by man and horse power. While on the project, the two sons married sisters. Frank's wife was the older one. They were daughters of a blacksmith, Benjamin Wortham, that Grandfather had hired to repair the implememts used on the project. Then both family's moved to what is now Haskell County, rented farm land and started farming and raising livestock, also did work for the county, doing any type of road building, such as making dirt road beds and building bridges. They worked for the county after the farm work was over for the year.

In 1911 the Fort Smith & Western Railroad Co., hired Grandfather to go to Van Buren, Arkansas to "rip wrap" the Arkansas River (pile rocks and dirt in the river to protect the bridge) because the Arkansas River was about to wash the railroad track away. He had four wagons loaded with equipment, feed, bedding, clothes and tents and cooking needs, and drove 50 miles to the project. Grandmother was the cook for the whole crew of men on all projects.

He also strip-mined coal every summer, after the crops were maturing. This project was 2 miles east of Kinta. He used a large plow to break the top soil and the shale, then used what was called scrappers to move the dirt off the coal. He sold coal to all schools in the county and to churches and merchants in Kinta.

The last contract he did was to rip-wrap the South Canadian River Bank at Calvin, Oklahoma to protect a state highway bridge. One of my sisters has some day books, (that is what he called them), that he used on some of these projects.

I don't know much about childhood days of Dad and Uncle Frank, except Granddad supervised building railroads They lived in tents and moved the tents as the work progressed. Because of the continual moving, the boys were taught at home. Grandmother did the cooking for all the workers, and hired a girl to help her. After they had moved to Haskell County the neighbors sometimes gathered at a home on Sunday afternoon. The men played games like croquet, checkers or house shoes. The women crocheted and tated or just visited. Dad said many times a group would meet at a home and sing ballads, no instruments, other than a guitar. Sometimes they square danced, then they had a "fiddler". Some of the ballads they sang were "Barbora Ellen, "Red Wing", "Casey Jones", and also religious songs. Grandmother taught me several song while I was a child. I stayed with her a lot of the time. Grandmother was an excellent cook. she was also an immacalate housekeeper and always dressed well.
