STATE OF GEORGIA}

Personally comes before me S. B. Lewis Ordinary of said County, Dr. I. G. Woolsey and Dr. J. C. Stephens, both known to me as reputable physicians of said County, who being severally sworn, say on oath that they have carefully examined Mr. J. F. McLean and after such personal examination, say that the present condition of applicant is as follows: that he was wounded at Cold Harbor on the 27th June 1862 in the right arm fracturing the humerous just below the shoulder so that the deltoid muscle has ematiated so that it is essentially useless the bone was so fractured that the ends could not be propertly adjusted and that such condition is permanent. Said condition arises from the following facts:
Hence union could not be perfect also preventing the recovery of muscular strength and renders said arm useless for labor up to the present time and is presently so.
We have treated applicant professionally for the past 25 years, and his condition, as above stated, does not arise from hereditary or congenital causes, or from vicious or intemperate habits.

GEORGIA}  Personally appeared before

FAYETTE COUNTY}  me, I. G. Woolsey, MD and J. C. Stephens, MD who being sworn say: We have this day made examination of the right arm of J. F. McLean and find it as follows:  ball entered right arm about half way between the elbow & shoulder blade on out side of arm, ball surged upward passing entirely through arm and coming out inside of arm just below shoulder joint – ball shattered bone and cut muscle – the bones never united and muscles perished away.  We say from examination made this day that arm is substantially & essentially useless is permanently so.  This is an amendment to our former affidavit and in substance the same as we meant before.

(This affidavit is not signed by a judge or justice of the peace so I don’t know if it was a copy of an official one that was offered or if it was never presented, I assume for pension or disability)

CONFEDERATE GEORGIA TROOPS

13th Regiment, Georgia Infantry

13th Infantry Regiment [also called Bartow Light Infantry] completed its organization in June, 1861, at Griffin, Georgia. Its members were recruited in the counties of Pike, Randolph, Early, Muscogee, Meriwether, Fayette, and Troup. This regiment first served in Western Virginia, then in December was ordered to Charleston, South Carolina, where it reported to General R.E. Lee. During the spring it fought at Whitemarch Island and soon moved back to Virginia. Brigaded under Generals Lawton, John B. Gordon, and C.A. Evans, it served with the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. The regiment was then involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox Campaign. The unit lost 9 killed and 19 wounded at Second Manassas, had 48 killed and 166 wounded at Sharpsburg, and sustained 13 casualties at Second Winchester. Of the 312 engaged at Gettysburg, more than forty percent were disabled. It surrendered 12 officers and 161 men. The field officers were Colonel John H. Baker, Marcellus Douglass, Walton Ector, and James M. Smith; Lieutenant Colonels S.W. Jones and Richard Maltbie; and Majors James A. Long and John L. Moore.
