NICHOLSON, John (b. 11 DEC 1822, d. 1857)

Note: Brig Gen John Nicholson of the Indian army soldier and Administrator.
Presented with a cadetship in Bengal Infantry in 1839 by his uncle Sir James Hogg, served in the first Afgan war 1839 to 1842 he distinguished himself in the defence of Ghanzni and was one of the prisioners who were carried to Bamian and escaped by bribing a guard.
He met Sir Henry Lawrence who got him an appointment as a political officerin Kashmirand on the Punjab frontier.
In 1847 he was given charge of the Sind Sagar district and did much to pacify the country after the first Sikh war.
