Hill County is located in north central Texas, along
I-35 between Fort Worth and Waco. Once an important hub
of railroad activity, it is today filled with sleepy,
farming communities. Small towns and two-lane roads dot
the county. The county seat of Hillsboro is the largest
populated area at 8232 (census year 2000). Today, Hill
County remains as a charming and viable link to early
20th century rural Texas.
Hill County is also the home to many neglected and
rarely-visited old graveyards. Some where once
associated with long-dead railroad communities, while
others can be found near the remains of old churches.
Burials in these cemeteries often date to the late
1800's or before. Several generations of the same family
were often interred together, making these old grounds
invaluable as research sites for the family historian.
Many of my own ancestors are buried in these Hill County
cemeteries, but when I began to look for them, I found
that only a few of the sites had been inventoried and
were available to the Internet researcher. It seemed a
natural next step to begin this task myself. As I have
time, I intend to visit and catalogue some of the
smaller, less "popular" cemeteries and post them here.
I
have tried to be as diligent as possible, and have
double- and tripled-checked the data before I posted it
online. I do still make mistakes, as many of the old
headstones are almost unreadable. I have kept all of my
original digital photographs, and will be happy to email
those if requested.
