MANBEVERS families.
Vol. 7 No. 11 - September 2004
Welcome to your "Kentucky" edition of the Van Bibber
Pioneers newsletter. The majority of this newsletter pertains to information on
the Van Bibber family and its various branches which have connections to the
state of Kentucky. A special thanks goes out this month to Annette Brown, Bruce
Logan and Jean Murphy for their numerous submissions. Bruce and Jean's Van
Bibber ancestors were Kentuckians while Annette's husband can also trace his Van
Bibber ancestors back to this state. A good job for all those who submitted.
For the remaining three months that I am your editor we will
have normal newsletters which will cover all branches of the family. Hopefully
we will have someone pick up where I leave off, and we will continue to have the
newsletter into the new year. In the mean time, please forward your articles to
me so we can get them published into the newsletter so all family members can
read.
I am sorry to report that we lost another subscriber this
month. Betty VanBiber Scarbrough wrote me an e-mail a while back and became a
new subscriber to the newsletter in August. I just found out that she passed
away on the 20th of September in Richmond, Virginia. Betty was the
daughter of Earl and Lucille Barton VanBiber who were from the area of
Evansville, Indiana. Our condolences go out to her family and to the families of
the other numerous Van Bibber cousins who have passed away in the last few
months.
Your Editor,
Gary R. Hawpe

JAMES S. AND LUCY GREENE
James S. Greene was born in Bell County on Feb. 6, 1886, the son of Dr.
Columbus Greene, born April 1, 1860, died Sept. 25, 1939 and his wife, Margaret
Vanbever Greene, born Sept. 29, 1864, died Jan. 30 1969. He was the grandson of
Martin H. Greene and Phoebe Ledford Greene, originally of Cleveland County, NC.
They came to Bell County shortly after the Civil War. On his mother's side, he
was the grandson of Robert Vanbever and Margaret Jane Susong Vanbever who
settled on Yellow Creek in the 1840's.
Greene grew up on Hances Creek. As a young man, Greene worked as a logger and
also as a railroad hand. On March 3, 1910, he married Lucy Smith,
daughter of Elijah Smith, born March 9, 1848, died Oct. 26, 1905 and his wife
Letitia Fuson Smith, born Feb. 22, 1852, died March 29, 1924. Lucy Greene was
born on Little Clear Creek on Oct. 3, 1882. She attended the Barbourville
Baptist Institute and taught school in Bell County for several years. Her
schools included Cannon Creek, Greasy Creek, Hances Creek, Beach Grove, Little
Clear Creek, Pine Grove, Flat Shoals and Pruden. School then ran for six months
starting in July. The school day started at eight and ended at four. She roomed
each term in the home of one of her students.
At the time of their marriage, James Greene was serving as a deputy sheriff
for Bell County and was also employed by T.J. Asher. He became associated with a
bottling firm in Pineville. In 1918, the couple moved to Harlan where he managed
the City Ice and Refrigerating Company, makers of Hirco Ice Cream. Greene served
as general manager. He also became involved in mining and held interest in
various mines including the Greene-Silvers Coal Company and the Good Coal
Company of Harlan County and later Garmeda Coal Company of Bell County. He was
president of Greene Furniture and Hardware Company. For many years he operated
Greene Motor Company, selling Chevrolets, Oldsmobiles and GMC trucks. Greene was
a director of the Bank of Harlan and served a term as president of the Harlan
County Coal Operators Association. He was actively involve in politics as a
Republican, and in 1926 served as sheriff of Harlan County. He and his wife were
faithful members of the Harlan Methodist Church. James Greene died on May 12,
1965; Lucy, on Jan. 23, 1973. They are buried at Resthaven Cemetery in Harlan
County.
The had four children: Cloe Greene who died in infancy.
Glenn Leon Greene (1913-1981). Glenn was for a number of years associated
with Greene's Furniture and Hardware in Harlan. In the mid-1950's he moved to
Middlesboro and opened Greene's Pottery on US 25E on the north edge of the city.
Associated with the pottery was Greene's Toyland which boasted the largest
selection of toys in the tri-state region. When US 25E was widened in the 60's,
Greene closed his business and moved to Florida. He married twice. His first
wife was Winifred Jones with whom he had one son, Glenn L. Greene Jr. His second
wife was George Ellen Ruth Gaines who was active with him in the pottery.
Juanita Greene (see entry Kirby Smith Jr.)

MY KENTUCKY ROOTS
Hello from Montana, my name is Sheron Van Bever Warber. I can
trace or VB lineage quite a ways back, but will start with James Van Bebber
who married Hannah Hoover. They had a son, Isaac Van Bebber, born 1794 in
Virginia and died in Bell County, Kentucky in 1886. Isaac was my 3rd
great grandfather whose first wife was Hannah Long. They had a son, George
VanBeber, born on February 27, 1823. George married Mary Elizabeth Tinsley on
December 10, 1844 in Knox County, Kentucky. Their second son, George, was born
in 1849 in Harlan County, Kentucky and was my great grandfather. He spelled the
name "VanBever" and married Mary Ann Robbins on November 26, 1868 in Josh Bell
County, Kentucky. George and Mary's oldest child, John "Bid Dad" Calvin
VanBever, was my grandfather. John married Mariah Jane Hall on January 5, 1888
in Knox County, Kentucky. John and Mariah would have a large family, and their
youngest child, Frank Taylor VanBever, was my father. He was born on May 30,
1910 and died on February 12, 1979. Frank was married twice and I am his oldest
child from his second marriage to Myrtle Lucy Wiese. From this marriage there
would be four children; Sheron Lee b. 1946, Louisville, Ky., Myrtle Frances b.
1948 in Wisconsin, Frank Richard b. 1949 Knox Co., Ky. at "Big Dad's" home, and
Larry Allen b. 1952 in Wisconsin. We returned to Knox County shortly after my
younger sister's birth and lived just up the hill from "Big Dad's" blacksmith
shop. After Larry was born we went back to Wisconsin where we stayed. Throughout
the years we would return to Kentucky to visit, but we continued to make our
home in Wisconsin where I married and raised my family. In 2001 we moved to
Montana and love it here.
I know there are a lot of relatives still living in Kentucky and have lost
contact with most of them. We did make contact with two, which I never knew we
had and it was great. We are looking forward to meeting and hearing from more
Kentucky cousins.

QUERIES:

I was just reading the
last newsletter which included the posting re; Raymond Van Bibber. The
Ray Van Bibber that was the son of William and Ann Mary Sutton is ours… the
brother of my husband's grandmother. He was in the Navy but we lost track of him
after the early 40's. He visited his family in Evansville, Indiana and was never
heard from again. The Ray Van Bibber that was found living with Halsey, I'm not
sure about, but could be the same one. I'm attaching a photo of "our" Ray, taken
during his last visit home. It's the only photo we've ever seen of him.

Note: From all my research on the Van Bibber family census records, the only
Raymond/Ray Van Bibber who was born in Indiana before the turn of the century
(1900) was Raymond Van Bibber, the son of William Van Bibber and Mary Ann
Sutton. (GRH)

from Knox County, Kentucky, but had family ties to Bell County.

MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME
The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home
'Tis summer,
the people are gay;
The corn top's ripe and the meadow's in the
bloom,
While the birds make music all the day;
The young folks roll on the
little cabin floor,
All merry, all happy, and bright,
By'n by hard times
comes a-knocking at the door,
Then my old Kentucky home, good night!
Chorus
Weep no more, my lady,
Oh weep no more today!
We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home,
For the old
Kentucky home far away.
They hunt no more for the 'possum and the coon,
On meadow,
the hill and the shore,
They sing no more by the glimmer of the moon,
On
the bench by that old cabin door;
The day goes by like a shadow o'er the
heart,
With sorrow where all was delight;
The time has come when the
people have to part,
Then my old Kentucky home, good night!
Chorus
The head must bow and the back will have to bend,
Wherever
the people may go;
A few more days and the trouble all will end
In the
field where sugar-canes may grow;
A few more days for to tote the weary
load,
No matter, 'twill never be light,
A few more days till we totter on
the road,
Then my old Kentucky home, good night!
Chorus
