VAN BIBBER PIONEERS E-NEWSLETTER

Vol. 4 No. 2 – December 1999

Greetings:

I hope all of you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Two days ago I got a very nice present from a lady that is not a descendant of the Van Bibber family, but since a distant cousin of her Eggers family married into the Van Bibber family of Greenup Co., KY (Elizabeth Van Bibber, daughter of James and Sarah (Bradburn) Van Bibber married Elbert Theodore Eggers) she came by a photo of James Van Bibber of Greenup Co., KY and Kalkaska, MI. For those of you who don’t know about James Van Bibber, he is one of the few individuals that we, including the expert, Gary R. Hawpe, cannot connect to his or her parents.

The reason I mention this is that some of you may want a copy of the photo. I would be more than willing to send you one as an attachment to an e-mail. I do not have the capability to print the photo out to a photo quality printer. I still use an HP 600C and the quality is not that great. Let me know if you would like a copy sent by e-mail attachment.

We now have two hundred and seventy-two subscribers.

Hello Bruce,

I visited your web site but couldn't find any information that relates to Emerson Van BIBBER and Lusetta CRAWFORD. She was b. 1877 in Winterset, Madison Co, IA and as a young girl moved with her family to Shawnee Co, KS. I'm sure she was married to Emerson somewhere in that vicinity - if not Shawnee Co, perhaps Douglas Co. KS.

I would be appreciative if you can point me to any information on this couple; as you can see, I have very little to go on. In the early 1900's many of Lusetta Crawford VanBibber's family lived in the Morris-Chase-Lyon County areas of Kansas, southwest of Shawnee Co; but I have not been able to find Emerson VanBibber.

Best Regards,

Chris Hankins

In following the thread that Bill sent to Cathey...

I have this Daniel POTTS md 25Oct1721 to Sarah SHOEMAKER (, b: 22 May1698), daughter of Peter SHOEMAKER and Margaret OP DE GRAEFF. Their
children were listed as Samuel, Daniel and Rebecca. After Daniel's death in 1729,
Sarah md2 to James DILWORTH and had children Elizabeth, Margaret, William,
Jonathan, Nicholas and James.

Does anyone have supporting details for these relationships?

Thanks!

Cathey,

You may be interested in Daniel POTTS, b.19 Apr 1698, Bristol Twp., Bucks Co., PA d.1729 Germantown, PA son of David POTTS c1670-1730 by Alice CROASDALE, 1673-bef.1729 marr. to a Sarah SHOEMAKER.

I don't have her parents at this point, nor a descent of Daniel/Sarah.

Hello,

I have posted to this list in the past month or so trying to find information on a Sarah Shoemaker, who married into my Eaton line in 1686 and was supposed to be the cousin of Peter Shoemaker. I received much helpful information and wish to thank members of the list for it.

Today, I am posting on something very different. I have noticed the surname
POTTS surface on this list occasionally, but did not think they were connected with my family in any way. However, I have been interested for some time in obtaining a manuscript written by a T.H. (or T. M.) Potts, called "Our Family Ancestors", which contains information about the Eaton line during the early days of Philadelphia. A few days ago, it occurred to me that this T.H. Potts might be connected to the Potts of this list.
Does he sound familiar to anyone?

KENNETH SMITH’S ANCESTORY AND AN OPEN LETTER

By Kenneth Smith (sgtssmith@worldnet.att.net)

If you would like to put this in the newsletter, go ahead. It might even cause more people to send in newsletter articles.

I am a relative newcomer to the Van Bibber/Op den Graff family lines, and only learned of the Van Bibber Family Website a few months ago. I have been avidly browsing through the information in the archived newsletters however, sort of like a kid in a candy shop, finding so many new ancestors. My family, before I discovered your website, was: (On the Van Bibber side)

Isaac Van Bebber & Hester op den Graeff
Jacob Isaac Van Bibber & Christina
Isaac Jacob Van Bibber & Veronica
         Peter Van Bibber & Ann
John Van Bibber & Chloe Standiford
Miriam Van Bibber & John Reynolds
                  Ellicott Reynolds & Elizabeth Howe
Elizabeth Van Reynolds & James R. Smith
Percy Howe Smith & Angeline Middaugh
Raymond Percy Smith & Violet Mathews
                              Kenneth Ray Smith

While I haven¹t done any new research, I have noticed that there seems to be a great deal of confusion out there, especially in the Op den Graff line. I spent some time trying to straighten out some of the more obvious mistakes, and I thought it would be a good idea to put out something for everyone to look at and brainstorm. Possibly we could at least come up with some sort of consensus about the earlier information.

There already seems to be agreement that the earliest Op den Graff was Herman of Aldekirk, born 26 Nov 1585. He married Grietje Pletjes of Kempen in that town on 16 Aug 1605. She was born in Kempen in 1588, but the dates are all over on her birth. Herman died in Krefeld on 27 Dec 1642, Grietje died in Jan 1643, probably in Krefeld. This couple had a great number of children in Krefeld, possibly as many as 18, but only 7 or so lived to maturity.
(1) Hester, b. 1609, m. Isaac Van Bibber...This daughter is the first Op den Graff link to the Van Bibbers.
(2) Abraham, b. 17 Jul 1610, m. Eva Von der Leyen, 21 Aug 1641.
(3) Trinken, b. 15 Feb 1612, d. 15 Dec 1658.
(4) Isaac Hermans, b. 1 Sep 1616, d. 17 Jan 1679...This son is the link to the next generation. He is sometimes called Herman Isaacs, but the naming patterns would seem to indicate his name should be what is written. Some sources give his wife as Grietgen Pieters, but this sounds so close to his mother¹s name that I¹m not sure. Some say her name was Janson. She is supposed to have emigrated with her sons to America, and died shortly after her arrival, in Philadelphia, on 19 Nov 1683.
(5) Derick, b. Oct 1621, d. 14 Apr 1655.
(6) Aletgen, b. 1623, d. Apr 1706.
(7) Susanna, b. 15 Oct 1629, bur. 9 Mar 1714.

The next generation of Op den Graff is Isaac. Some sources give his death as 1669, but I think that 1679, closer to the sons leaving for America, makes more sense. There seem to be only 4 children, all apparently born in Krefeld.
(1) Derick Isacks, b. c. 1642, m. Noleken on 20 Mar 1681 in Krefeld, d. May 1697, probably in America.
(2) Herman Isacks, b. c. 1643, m. first Lisbet Van Bibber, second Deborah Van Bibber, d. 2 May 1704 in Kent Co., Del....This son is the second link to the Van Bibbers. He married first his sister¹s daughter, and after her death, he married second his sister¹s son¹s daughter. He apparently had children by both wives. The one daughter we are concerned with here, Margaret, was b. c. 1667, possibly in Krefeld, probably the daughter of his first wife Lisbet. Margaret m. Peter Schumacher on 6 Feb 1697 in Abington, Pa.
(3) Abraham Isacks, b. c. 1645, m. Trijnte Jansen in Aug 1679 and d. 1731.
(4) Margaret, came with her brothers to America.

I know that there are other links between the Op den Graff and Van Bibber lines, but I looked at only these. I should add the information that has been posted about Herman Op den Graff¹s wife, Grietje Pletjes of Kempen. Her father was Driessen Pletjes of Kempen, b. c. 1555, m. Adelheid Goebels in Kempen on 13 Dec 1584. He d. 22 may 1608 in Kempen. Adelheid d. c. 1615. They had another daughter besides Grietje, Alet, who married a Jasper and was an ancestor of William Penn. Adelheid¹s father was Sylli Goebels, b. c. 1531 in Kempen.

Ed Marsh found a great site on the Library of VA page for microfilm images of the military pay records for Dunmore's War (Battle of Pt. Pleasant -1774) in which many men from Greenbrier (then Botetourt Co) fought. Capt. Mathew Arbuckle's Company is listed on pp. 173-176 with many Muddy Creek names George See, Peter Shoemaker, John Hardy, George Yokum, William & John Morris, McClung, Viney and others. The Vanbebbers are listed in a couple of places: Augusta Co and Fincastle Co. Same guy can be listed in different companies and counties so check the index. It's kind of tedious to work through the cards for your particular name but easy to get the hang of it. You have to download the Tiff Viewer (it gives directions how) to retrieve actual document.

Address to the index is:

Address to Arbuckle's company (p. 173) begins on

BEDBURG-HAU

By Anna L. Lutz (Alutz@juno.com)

I am sending some information that was brought back from Germany or Holland by Raymond Van Bibber of Germany, in 1996, sent to the nephew of Hazel Van Bibber, Perry, Oklahoma, USA, now deceased. It is entitled, "Bedburg-Hau".

Bedburg-Hau, used to be called, "Bebber" (Hebber), it is a very old town in Germany. There is another town in Holland, that was called Bebber, that was founded by Jacob Isaacs Van Bebber. Bedburg-Hau, is probably, where the name first came from.

The journey from Kalkar, to Bedburg-Hau, passes over a road, that poses a small problem for cyclists, because it goes uphill. The foothills of an end moraine provide for gentle ups and downs in Bedburg-Hau. The ridge is without doubt one of the essential reason why Bedburg-Hau, has become a favorite residential area in Kreis Kleve.

The almost 750-year-old town, has always faced up to its importance, as it has always been the cultural and economic center of the Neiderrhein. Outstanding is the historic contributions made on a large scale by the Prince Of Nassau, in the 17th century.

The district possesses in Moyland Castle, a cultural monument of the first order. It will take many years before this old castle, remarkable for it architecture, will be fully restored.

The exceptionally scenic appeal of the district has been the reason for many to build their own homes in Bedburg-Hau.

Bedburg, in German. Betebur (1138), Beddebur (1143), Bedeber, Bedbere, Beeder (1537), Daraus entstand auch der neiderrheinische Familienname "Van Bebber". Bebber or Heber was located in the Dutchy of Cleves, (Germany).

I saw that the article by Dr. Max Van de Sandt, article mentioning, Bedburg, I hope all of the members will enjoy reading this.

THE ORIGINAL 13 GERMANTOWN SETTLERS MAIL LIST

From Vincent E. Summers (vsummers@nrao.edu) (Non-subscriber)

Folks,

I have made the new list a moderated list. That is, it will be the same as the Listbot list. Outsiders cannot post. If you see a message on another site that would be of interest to the group, you can contact the poster, and if they give the ok, you can copy
and paste their letter and send it to the group. Plus you can always invite a person to join. There are no requirements.

Next, I increased the size of the digest slightly, so that I could increase the size of the letters we can post. Rootsweb allows various settings. But if you set it too high, it messages up the digest posts. So I set the maximum size of the letters we can send up from 20,000 to 30,000. And I set the digest from something like 32,678 to 40,000. Also, instead of every 18 hours, digests will be sent every 24 hours (or sooner if size exceeded).

Sometime soon I intend to put taglines on the bottom. I will try to use these for important directions. It should help prevent the need for repeating the same instructions to individuals that are new. Of course, I am always willing to help if there is difficulty, or an unfamiliarity with the way things run.

I am allowing the two-weeks public access to the mail list archives. Joe Patterson, please contact me and help me understand this provision a little better...

One of the taglines will list our homepage. Maybe even more than one.

Please break off all button interfaces, if you have one, or instructions on how to join Listbot. If you can, and if you are willing, please *do* invite others to join our Rootsweb list, and provide this URL:
http://members.aol.com/gfsjohnf/gen_mail_states-pa.html#Original13

Or tell them how they may subscribe. It makes it even better, if you can tell them what to expect.

Thanks, and you can join readily now, and then feel free to unsub at
Original13@listbot.com by sending this message:

Me-David John Brown Jr.-known in the family as Buster or Bus. Outside of family as "Dave"

Father-David John Brown Sr. (birth certificate-John David Brown)-know as "Dave"
Grandparents-Lucy Belle Van Bibber Brown -"Lucy" and James Robert Brown
Great-Grandparents-John Campbell Robinson Van Bibber -"Jack" or "Jackson" and Malinda Catherine Taylor Van Bibber
Great-Great Grandparents-David Campbell Robinson Van Bibber and Jane Williams Van Bibber

Any of these familiar to you? My "Uncle Arch" was Thomas Archibald Brown. His only son, my cousin Jim, was James Edward Brown, who I knew through his entire life. He married Edna Johnson. They lived in St. Paul Minnesota and so did I. They had a son Bryan, who had a son, James Edward Schilling, according to my notes. We lived about 4 blocks apart.

Is this Jim in your ancestry?

Waiting to hear from you,

Dear Jim,

I was in a state of shock when I received Bruce's message! "Jim Brown"! Could you be in cousin Jim's line? Why was I so sure that you were? I should have waited for your reply. Now, after looking through my data, one possibility is that you're Jim Harlow Brown, son of Max Harlow Wheeler. If so, I have a lot of data you might be interested in. One is a family listing from Mary Laflen which I received in '85. Over the years I have been helped by an awful lot of people. Several were, and are, Nebergall descendants..

I started most of my family chasing all over the place. I finally settled on a specific plan. That was in the '70s. My plan was to chart David Campbell Robinson Van Bibber's descendants down to my generation.

I declared it satisfactory to MY satisfaction about five years ago. I have about 350 source documents for these individuals. Many of those documents are letters from all these relatives, all interested in helping. Some years after I started the project I found that only a computer could accommodate and process the data, and so I started with ROOTS lll , very obsolete today but still did a good job for me then. If I could get others to follow my lead who were NOT in David's descendant list, I would be able to interchange and have very broad Van Bibber data.

The REAL fun would begin! And that was to collect all those wonderful stories that I heard as a kid.

You see, family stories were what started me on genealogy. When I was about 9 or 10, I lived with my Grandma, (Lucy Belle Van Bibber Brown). Oh! Those stories! Indian fighting, exploring, hunting, fishing. People like Daniel Boone. My grandma had the stories, but she didn't know many of the names of the Van Bibbers involved, except for her parents and grandparents. These stories stayed in my mind over the years. When I
was in college after the war I took a class in "Human Ecology" and studied the Western Migration and why, where, and how those pioneers did what they did. I had to write a term paper and decided I would do some research on Van Bibbers. After all, they started in Holland, then Pennsylvania, and then spread across the country. Why wouldn't they be typical. The first day my studying started I went to the State Historical Society library in St. Paul, MN, where I lived. I made a pass at the catalogue and spotted some books that sounded interesting, then to each index. Would you believe there were Van Bibbers listed????

Then went to the pages, and there they were! Many of the stories that Grandma had told me! Complete with names and relationships. Well, I still have copies of that term paper. I got a pretty good grade out of it too. I was hooked for life!

And now the NEWSLETTER! I found out about it from a distant relative who
gave me a few of the early copies. How excited I am that people like yourself, if interested, can find out about their family roots! The computer, E-mail, and the Web have opened it all up to everyone! When I read the membership list on those old copies, I was amazed at the number of people on that list that I have corresponded with for many decades. A whole new horizon!

Well, here I go, running off again.

Let me from you.

QUERIES

From Alice Schurman (ASCHUR@parknet.pmh.org)

At the risk of being repetitive I am still looking for something on Ann(Mary) Van Bibber. I found a bit in the newsletter archives from Kirbyroe that I have not followed up yet regarding having a copy of the page from the family Bible of Mary Van Bibber and William Dudley Bonds. He is always Dudley in the Census and she is Ann. This bit had her being born in England and coming from up East to South Carolina. I wonder if she meant New England. The census has her parents as Americans no further north than Virginia. After collecting a stack of group sheets and notes on Van Bibbers/Boones/Chews about an inch thick, I am truly frustrated.

Learned a lot of history I did not know. I can get history from books. I need a parent for Miss Van Bibber a.k.a. Mrs. Dudley Bonds mother of William Meredith Bonds. I have two pictures of unidentified people with dark hair, fair skin and light eyes. The female picture is Civil War time dress and hair , taken in New Orleans. The young man of the same era picture taken in Little Rock Ark. I suspect it is a Bonds but it could be anybody. Attention readers, date and put names on those Christmas pictures. Be they ever so humble, they could be the only one left someday of a dear person who will have become an "ancestor". Happy New Year dear cousins! Alice Schurman(double Dutch) from Texas.

From Jan Hoy (jhoy1@ix.netcom.com)

I show a Barbara Carlock b. 1-31-1805 married to Gabriel Van Bebber, son of
John VanBebber and Margaret Crisman.

Gabriel's brother Peter married Sarah Grimes. Sarah Grimes' mother was Nancy Carlock b. abt 1778 (supposedly in TN). Nancy Carlock married George Grimes
probably about 1802. Sarah Grimes was born in 1803.

Do either of you have any information about this Carlock family? or the George Grimes family?

This George Grimes-Nancy Carlock marriage has been a dead-end for me. I can't seem to find any Carlock information, and there are several Grimes families, and I can't figure out which one George belongs to.

I know these families aren't your main focus, but I'm hoping that you may
have some information from working collateral lines etc.

Thanks,
Jan Hoy
