Van Bibber Pioneers Electronic Newsletter
Volume 3, Number 6   ·   April 1999

Greetings:

I wish to thank all of those subscribers who answered my desperate plea for articles and queries. The response was overwhelming. You sent too much information for this issue and the material that does not appear in this issue will be in the May issue. I probably will even be able to get the next issue out on time.

It has been a very busy time for me: Working on the new house; work at school; and preparation for retirement. Yes, retirement. I am retiring after thirty years of teaching and it does take some paper work and running around to get the paper work done. Most of that is behind me now and I should be able to get caught up on the Van Bibber Pioneers newsletter and genealogy.

Be sure to read the query by Liese Uptegrove-Ade’ if you have an interest in the Schumacher family. I do believe she has made an interesting discovery. I would like to publish any responses you have to her concerning this query as I would every other answer to any query. I do believe the subscribes have an interest in this type of material. As you might recall, I call this type of article "Success Stories".

We now have two hundred and fifty subscribers.

LOST CHILD

By Bev Gillihan (Bgillihan@aol.com)

Artie Marie Van Bibber, our lost child:

On Nov. 8th. 1894, Ethel Van Bibber, orphaned daughter of William Albert and
Ann Mary Van Bibber, gave birth to a daughter. Ethel, barely fifteen years old, with no family and no husband, found herself alone and ill equipped for the task ahead of her. Artie's birth certificate lists the father as, Clinton Strong but there is no reason to believe that beyond being present at the conception, he ever played a part in his daughter's life.
We believe Clinton Strong to be the Grandson (Step) of Delilah (Van Bibber) Strong and her husband, John. Delilah was the sister of Martha J. O. Van Bibber and the maternal Grandmother of Ethel.

Ethel was raised in the Warrick County Orphan's Home and records indicate
that at age thirteen she was sent to the county Poorhouse which was common in the late 1800's. We can only assume that the Strongs took her into their home due to the family connection. What happened between the time she entered their home and gave birth we can only assume, there are no records for this period of her life.

We know nothing about the first three years of Artie Marie's life. We pick up the threads of her story in 1900 when she and Ethel were recorded on the 1900 Warrick County Census. Ethel is listed as eighteen years old, single with one child, Marie, aged three. It is ten years before we find Ethel again, on the 1910 Census. Ethel is listed as married to William Crow, aged 28, the mother of two children, both living but only Hershell, aged 8 is named. No mention of Artie Marie who should have been thirteen years old.

The discovery of a Marriage license solved the mystery of Artie Marie's whereabouts. On June 7th. 1911, Artie Marie married, George Southwell. The license gives her date of birth as 1895 which we know is not correct and simply means.....she lied about her age and was in fact, thirteen years old when she married and her groom was twenty years older.

We next find Artie Marie in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Her Tombstone reads:
George M. Southwell, Sept. 28, 1878 - March 17, 1941
Artie M. His Wife, March 30, 1897 - Nov. 21, 1918

Artie Marie is dead at age twenty-one and is buried beside her husband, George who lived until 1941 and died at age, sixty three.

Why did she die so young? We don't know! Did she and George have children of
their own? We don't know! Did George love Artie Marie and care for her? We think he did! He never re-married and he chose to be buried next to his wife twenty three years after her death. What we do know for certain is that Ethel never told any family member about her daughter. I have interviewed everyone still living and gone through family records and there is no mention of Artie Marie anywhere. Family members still living can attest to that fact.

I think this is incredibly sad! It seems Artie Marie was hidden away for many years and then allowed or possibly even, forced to marry when still a child so she could be erased forever from her family history. She would have remained nameless forever had we not found the records and investigated them.

There is probably much more to be learned about our Artie Marie but I doubt
that we will ever know the entire story. I hope to do for her in death what no one did in her life, acknowledge that she is ours!

NOTE: I couldn't have discovered any of this information without the help of
Virginia Aldridge and Gary Hawpe.

LEWIS - In the 1890s several members of the Lewis family moved to Mt. Grove
from Carrollton, MO. where James Van Bibber Lewis (1835 - 1894) and his wife, Sarah Eugenia Austin (1846 - 1926), had lived since he was elected County Sheriff in 1884. Of their seven children, Caroline Donnally (1866 - 1928) married Oliver S. Brand (1861 - 1919) and moved to Mt. Grove in 1894; Sallie Patrick (1869 - 1951) married Dr. Charles Edward Barnes (1872 - 1917) who began his medical practice there in 1895; James Eugene (1880 -1942) went as a young teenager and most likely his older sister, Katie Kanna (1872 - 1897), moved also with their mother to the "Jim Lewis farm" in the Whestone area.

James Eugene Lewis was associated with the mercantile business of J. A. Cover
and J. Earle Brooker and traveled in the area for the Mt. Grove Grocer Co., Springfield Grocer Co. and General Grocer Co. of St. Louis. He served on the City Council 18 years, School Board 16 years and Home Building and Loan Board 15 years. In 1909 he married Blanche Etta Hayes (1887 - 1956), a school teacher, daughter of Belle Kellett and Frank Wesley Hayes. They had three children: Euginia Blance (died 1911 in infancy), James Eugene, Jr. (1917) and Mildred Virginia (1921). James and Blanche Lewis were buried in Hillcrest Cemetery.

James Eugene Lewis, Jr. graduated from Mt. Grove High School, Missouri
University with honors and Harvard Medical School. He served in a field surgical hospital in WWII and as physician to President Truman in the White House during 1946. Following completion of his surgical training, he became the first in Missouri to specialize in the surgery of infants and children as first Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis. Currently he is Professor Emeritus of Surgery at St. Louis University. He married Elizabeth Brooks McKee of New York in 1950 and they had four children: James Eugene III, Linda Brooks, Elizabeth Brooks and
Stephen McKee.

Mildred Virginia Lewis graduated from Mt. Grove High School and William Woods College, majoring in voice. She has continued to sing with church choirs,
has been Regent of her DAR Chapter and is an excellent golfer. She married Arthur Frederick Settlage of St. Louis in 1944 and they had three children: Richard Arthur, Ann Lewis and Patricia Schirm.

The Lewises descended from John Lewis (1678 - 1762), who migrated from
Donegal County, Ireland, to Pennsylvania, founded Staunton, VA, and had five sons in the American Revolution. Of these, Gen. Andrew Lewis (1720 - 1781), for whom Lewisburg, WV, was named, was a surveyor, military engineer and militia officer defending the Colonial frontier, treaty commissioner, a founder of Washington and Lee (originally Augusta Academy), and a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. He was known as the Hero of the Battle of Point Pleasant and was a friend of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

His statue is one of six prominent Virginians at the base of Washington's
equestrian statue in Richmond, VA. General Lewis was the great-great-grandfather of James Van Bibber Lewis, who left Virginia after his father's death to see the west. He settled in Lexington, MO in 1856 and the next year married Sarah Eugenia Austin, daughter of Lucinda Calloway and John Austin, who had moved from Virginia to Missouri before her birth. In 1860 they moved to a farm in Carroll County. Their children, besides those mentioned above, were: Thomas Calloway, Henry Sinton, and Lucia Anderson.

LETTER FROM LYMAN C. DRAPER TO DAVID C. R. VAN BIBBER

By David J. Brown (dbrown711@juno.com)

Dear Bruce,

This may be old history to many readers, but to me, it was exciting! Lyman C. Draper! Writing to my great great grandfather! The copy of the letter was sent to me by Mary Duffe of the Oklahoma Genealogical Society several years ago.

The envelope home address is "Pheasant Branch Wisc. Dane Co. May 17-67". The address is "David C. R. Van Bibber Esq., Nicholas C. H., West Virginia".

The letter starts, and please understand that much of the writing is difficult to read,

Pheasant Branch Dane Co. Wis May 17-67
David C. R. Van Bibber Esq.

My Dear Sir:
I have to thank you for your favor of the 27th ...., your kindness in communicating to me such information as you possessed. Let me make a few inquiries:
1st. Where were the Van Bibbers originally from- prior to their settling in Greenbrier?
2: Have you any knowledge of Capt. John Van Bibber making an early trip to Natchez and returning by land - getting nearly starved by the way? If so, please give me all the particulars known to you about it - who were his companions, what became of them. This Van Bibber was your father's uncle.
3: Has your uncle Jacob Van Bibber any children living that you could refer me to? (?) hardly think he removed to Missouri, as Nathan Boone & wife would have been likely to have known it; .....they knew of him, he was in the Greenup.b..g region Kentucky.
4th Have you the date of your uncle Joseph Van Bibber's death - and then particulars of his captivity. - please give them

5th Give such detail, as much as you can remember, of your father's Indian fight and escapes (?) in the Point Pleasant region : If you can't give them completely, even the fragments will help me.
6th Tell the tale of his death.
7th. You say your father served under General Wayne three months : Where was that service performed?

Let me hope to hear from you soon.
Very truly yours,
Lyman C. Draper

QUERIES

From Pat Gast (pat@netcnct.net)

My husband Steve Gast descends from the Vanbibbers through the Ross/Vanbibber marriage. Then on down the line a Shoemaker appears in another branch. His name is DAVID SHOEMAKER b. 1800 - Ohio. Died 1878 Ashland Co., Ohio. Wife, ELLEN Unknown. He had 3 or 4 daughters, one named HARRIET. David seems to have spent much of his life in Vermillion Township, Ashland Co., Ohio.

I know that is a real stretch from the VanBibber line, but maybe someone will recognize David?

From Gary R. Hawpe (GRH9999@aol.com)

I am looking for the parents of Mary VANBIBBER. She was born in the state of
Indiana abt. 1855 according to the 1880 census of Vanderburgh Co., IN. Mary married (1st) Robert BULLETT on July 31, 1873 in Vanderburgh Co., IN. Book # 8, Page # 49. From this marriage there would be one daughter, Lora BULLET, born abt. 1879. It is not known what happened to Robert, but Mary married (2nd) William Nathaniel CRAFT on May 9, 1880. William and Mary can be located on the 1880 census of Vanderburgh County with her daughter Lora.

According to an e-mail I have from a descendant of William's first marriage,
William and Mary would have three children: Lillie, Josephine, and Cora. She also states -- The first time that he (William) was admitted to the "soldier's home" in Danville (IL) in 1896, his nearest living relative was Margaret Ising, 620 Camel (Carmel?) Street, Evansville, IN.

In my VanBibber records I have a Margaret VANBIBBER who married Peter ISING on September 11, 1867 in Vanderburgh Co., IN. Book # 6, Page # 31.

Question: Is Margaret VanBibber ISING, the Margaret ISING William is referring to as a relative? From census records it appears Margaret lived her entire live in Vanderburgh County and is buried in Evansville. Was Mary a sister to Margaret and Margaret was William's sister-in-law? Margaret has been identified as the daughter of Peter VANBIBBER and Sarah Jane CHANCELLAR.

On the 1860 census of Vanderburgh County, Margaret - 9 and her siblings,
Olive - 10 and Commodore - 3, are living in the home of Jonathan HUBBANS (sp).
There is no Mary VANBIBBER, age abt. 5, listed in this home.

The following is an e-mail I have concerning Mary VanBibber Bullett CRAFT:

Gary,

Thanks for the additional info on Mary. She & Wm. are on pg. 42B of the 1900
Vanderburg Co, IN census (microfilm), he is 74, she 54, say they have been md 30 yrs, that she had 7 children with 2 living. They both state this is their only marriage?? He was a veteran of the Civil War having served in the Union Army from TN, Co. C 2nd TN Cavalry, mustered out as a Corp, 6 July 1865 after serving for 3 years. He lived in Danville, IL at the National Home for Disabled Soldiers from 26 Aug 1896-6 Apr 1902; 30 March 1905-25 Aug 1906 & again 18 July 1910-20 Oct 1910. I am sorry that I told you he died in IL, because he didn't; I think this is probably what Mama was always told & you know sometimes those things stick in your mind. His obituary printed in the
Evansville Journal-News, Wednesday, 8 Jan 1919, pg. 7 says that he died at his home at 410 Taylor Ave. In March 1915, when he filed out one of the forms for his Civil War pension, he names his children and shows Lillie M. as being "dead".

The first time that he was admitted to the "soldier's home" in Danville in 1896, his nearest living relative was Margaret Ising, 620 Camel (Carmel?) Street, Evansville, IN.
I don't know who she was, maybe you might know. According to his Civil War pension papers, he was born 3 July 1835, Richland District, South Carolina. He md Mary Elizabeth DENTON 29 Jun 1856 in Jefferson Co, TN. They later moved to Knox Co, TN where he enlisted in the C.W.; he also served as Constable in Knox Co. They moved to Allen Co, KY ca 1875 and then to Simpson Co, KY where Mary Elizabeth divorced him in 1879. Their oldest child, Henry Jackson Craft was my great grandfather. I have probably told you more about Wm. Craft than you ever wanted to know, but I just get "carried away".

Now-for the VanBibber/Beavers story: My great grandfather Stewart's bro.,
James and his wife, Darthulia had 4 children who were separated when small; we don't know what became of Darthulia & James, it is said that he was a river-boat gambler. Anyway there were 2 sons and 2 daughters, both of the girls wound up in Evansville, how or why is not known; the boys, went to New Orleans and TX. One of the girls,
Flora Obenia STEWART, b 6 Dec 1873 Warren Co, KY md John VanBIBBER b 17 Jan
1864, Knox Co, IN on 30 Sept 1895 in Evansville. I have a copy of marriage license. He died 12 Aug 1912 and is buried in Oak Hill in Evansville. His parents were Ike and Missouri Sutton VanBibber. I have a copy of the supplemental record of marriage transcripts from Evansville, which show his father as "I" and mother as M Sutton, he was 31 years old. (John's name is spelled VanBipper on the marriage license) He & Flora were the parents of Irene A. who md Grover C. VanMeter and Earl Cleveland who md Lucille Barton (she may still be living, but mind is bad). From Evansville birth records,
Flora had a child prior to her marriage to John VanBibber; the birth of their son, Earl was recorded under the name of "Beverage", father's name Jno and mother -----Steward, 23 Jan 1902 (which is the known date of Earl's birth).

John and Flora BEVERS are on the 1900 census of Evansville, from the soundex
it is E.D. 114, sheet 2, line 82. In 1904 in Simpson Co, KY as part of the settlement of her grandfather, J.C. Stewart, she as Flora Bevers and her husband, John Bevers, along with others deeded their share of the property of her grandfather. John died 11 Aug 1912 as John P. VanBibber; his death record says that his father was Ike VanBibber and mother Missouri Sutton.

When Flora remarried to Charles Schnell in 1915 she md him as Flora VanBibber. Their son, Earl applied for his marriage license in 1922 as Earl VanBiber. Years ago when my mother & I started our research and found a cousin in TX whose father was a bro. of Flora Stewart, she knew that her aunt Flora had married a Bevers and later a Schnell and lived in Evansville. It took us years to find Flora's family because we were looking for a Bevers family. These families were reunited for the 1st time since the deaths of the original bros. & sisters at a Stewart reunion a few years ago, which I had
the very rewarding opportunity of putting together. Two elderly first cousins from TX, the daughters of the 2 bros. were reunited in my mother's kitchen after having not seen each other since they were teenagers!

Genealogy does have it's rewards!! ;)

Jean Freund, daughter of Earl VanBibber lives in Evansville; she can relate
more of this VanBibber/Bevers story than I can remember. (I'm sure you're saying, I hope not!!) I haven't worked on this family in along time, that's why it took me so long to get back to you, I had to get out my Craft notebook & Stewart notebook and review!!

Gary, I hope this is of some help to you and hasn't bored you to tears! Let
me know if you find out any more, please!

Sue

I was wondering if you could post a question in your newsletter (this is a paragraph that I posted in the "Original 13" Lisbot, but received no response), but only if you feel it's relevant for your newsletter.

The people in the Original 13 list mentioned that Peter Shoemaker Jr. married Margaret Op den Graeff, daughter of Herman Op den Graeff and Liesbet (Elizabeth) Von Bibber.

Q: Does anyone know who Peter Shoemaker Sr. married? In the following paragraph, it says that a Peter Shoemaker married "Mercy Op den Graeff", daughter of Dirck Op den Graeff.

This is interesting, since it is believed by many other researchers that Dirck Op den Graeff did not have any children, because he left no mention of any in his Will.

Wagstaff, Blanche Shoemaker
Educational Work page 198

WAGSTAFF, BLANCHE SHOEMAKER (Mrs. Donald Carr), was born at Larchmont, New York, in 1888. Her father, Henry Francis Shoemaker, banker, of Philadelphia,
was a descendant of Peter Shoemaker, a native of Holland, who located in Philadelphia, in 1685. He was one of its first Burgesses and a leading man in the Colony. As a Quaker, he was associated with William Penn who during his visit to Pennsylvania in 1700, preached in Peter Shoemaker's home.

Peter's wife, Mercy, was a daughter of Dirck Op den Graeff of Rotterdam. Henry Francis Shoemaker was a pioneer railroad man and the owner of numerous lines. He also organized a large number of corporations in New York and in Western cities, and was a director of many banks, among them the Harriman Bank, the Trust Company of America, and the Chatham and Phoenix Bank. He served in the Civil War with the 27th Pennsylvania Volunteers. His wife was Blanche, daughter of Colonel James W. Quiggle, LL.D., who was descended from the ancient MacQuiggle family of Scotland. An ancestor served under William of Orange at the Battle of the Boyne. Colonel Quiggle was a State Senator, as well as Deputy Attorney General of Pennsylvania, Consul General at
Antwerp, Chargé d'affaires at Brussels, and Special Envoy to General Garibaldi. He married Cordella Mayer, a descendant of Henri Lemaire, a Huguenot, who fled from Toulouse, France, after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, in 1685, and came to America.
