Van Bibber Pioneers Electronic Newsletter
Volume 1, Number 5   ·   March 1997

Greetings from the editor:

I hope most of you are beginning to look forward to Spring. It has been a long Winter and for some of our members, especially in the far North, a very difficult one.

We have lost two of our members, perhaps because of the dynamics of the Internet, but we have gained several new subscribers. I encourage all of you to send me information and queries concerning the Van Bibber and related families.

It seem as though the last issue had a Schumacher theme and by coincidence this issue seems to have a Boone theme. This idea was not planned, but just seems to work out that way.

I hope Spring arrives soon and we can enjoy warmer weather and get out and hunt those long lost cemeteries full of our family members.

We now have sixty-nine members.

A BIEBER FAMILY

By Melanie Crain <mdcrain@aol.com>

Hello Bruce,

I would be delighted to see the Von Bibber newsletter; please send me a copy when you compile the next one and thanks for asking. I am including the Bieber family that I know; research is the work of Eldon G. Keefer, better known as Pete Keefer <PeteKeefer@aol.com> and author of the book, "The Keefer Families."

Johann Theobald Kieffer supposedly came to Berks Co., Pennsylvania, from Saxony Germany in 1744. He was the father of Abraham, b. 18 Nov 1758, who married Catherine Bieber; Theobald was also the father of Catherine Kieffer, b. 9 Nov 1763, who married George Bieber at Greencastle, PA in 1781. Three of their children married members of the Gutekunst family: Mary Bieber m. George Gutekunst; Hannah Bieber m. Daniel Gutekunst; and Margaret Bieber m. Jacob Gutekunst. Two sisters to these Gutekunst fellows, Margaret and Maria Magdalena married two of my grandfathers, George Frederick Pfleger and Abraham Pfleger, brothers who migrated from York Co., Pa in the late 1700's to the Shenandoah Valley near Strasburg and then to Floyd Co. by the early 1800's. The spellings eventually changed to "Beaver or Bieber," "Phlegar" and to "Goodykoontz."

A mid-1800 Goodykoontz home and the last of three original Phlegar homes are still in Floyd Co. today. Some of the Biebers came into the Montgomery/Floyd Co. area as well. From that point on, I have not followed the Biebers; but I have followed the other lines to which I am directly related.

If anyone is looking for information about the Goodykoontz or Phlegar families in York or Northampton Pa., or in the southwestern area of Virginia, I have tons and would be happy to share. By now these families are spread to the winds, but I have discovered that a natural bent for music tends to travel strongly along the Goodykoontz family line, myself included.

The above can be used if you need it. It would be very interesting to find some cousins in these families--not many that I can locate over modems but plenty by surface mail.

Talk to you again,

Melanie Crain

BOONE AND FRONTIEER FAMILIES ASSOCIATION

From: Margy Miles <4miles@mail.usmo.com> Non Member

"A complete and accurate record, even in general terms, of the life of Daniel Boone, has never been accomplished. It has been noted by one author that "So much fabrication and misinformation has been generated about Daniel and his family that the generally accepted view of his life is more often than not distorted beyond recognition."

It is because of this pile of jumble which is called fact, that Boone writers cannot separate out the correct from the incorrect, without spending years and years researching through many, many, documents.

Only THREE Boone historian-authors fit this research qualification,......

Lyman DRAPER, Hazel Atterbury SPRAKER, and John BAKELESS, and even they didn't have the time to give near the full view. We will continue with this thought......"

Ken Kamper, Editor of "The History & Genealogy Research Letter".

THE OBJECTIVES OF "THE BOONE & FRONTIER FAMILIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION"

Our purposes and goals are to research, assemble, record, and present the

following:

1. The complete and TRUE story of DANIEL BOONE, his ancestry, and his family.

2. The history and genealogy of all the frontier families who lived in Missouri prior to 1820.

Almost all of them came from Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee.

3. The true (overlooked) American frontier history, as it moved along (with Daniel Boone) from

Virginia and North Carolina, through Tennessee and Kentucky, and on to and through Mo.

4. All of the Boone related frontier sites on maps, including all known property locations,

houses, mills, historic events, and frontier family cemeteries.

5. Photocopies of Boone and associated families official documents; marriage

licenses, deeds, wills, etc.

6. The location of reference sources on our subjects, including available books and archived

records.

7. Information to generate public support for preserving the remaining Boone era sites.

It is hoped that through finding, assembling, and presenting our history subjects, that we will educate and interest the public, and gain its support for carrying out our goals,....to establish

a Daniel Boone History Museum and a Frontier Families Genealogy Research Center in the

"Boone Settlement of Missouri". This area being the location chosen by Daniel Boone as his

"home" for the last 20 years of his life. There has never been a museum built to tell the complete factual story of Daniel Boone and to honor his important place in American history,....despite

the fact that he has always been one of America's foremost recognized heroes.

FAMILY GENEALOGY DATA COMPILERS; These are persons who compile data on

various branches of their own family ancestry, and who are willing to share at least parts of their knowledge with our Research Association. Some of these persons are their family's "genealogist", some are persons collecting available data on their families, and some are volunteers who help to

assemble the family data for our organization. Some of these persons have established lines through "proving", while other persons have assembled data requiring further verification. The purpose of our organization will be to help persons who are interested in, or who request information on one of the families.

WE WILL ALWAYS BE LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL FAMILY GENEALOGY DATA COMPILERS. We plan to have one or more "Family Genealogy Data Compilers" for each of the families who lived along the frontier with the Boones during the early 1700's--1820 period....(as an example; there could be three or four persons who keep separate records on the Boone family, or the Clay family, or the Hancock family....and so on). IF YOU ARE WILLING TO ASSEMBLE AND SHARE DATA ON ANY OF THE FAMILIES OF YOUR INTEREST (EVEN ON A TRIAL BASIS), JUST WRITE US A LETTER. We will help you assemble the data and we will promote the exchange of genealogy data between yourself and others.

SHOEMAKER SURNAME LIST

From: Bobbi Estle <estle@fuse.net>

To: Shoemaker Family discussion list <SHOEMAKER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu>

Bobbi

From: Dickshoe@aol.com

Date: Mon, 20 Jan 1997 05:50:56 -0500 (EST)

To: estle@fuse.net

Subject: Re: SHOEMAKER SURNAME LIST

In a message dated 97-01-20 00:27:36 EST, you write:

-------------------------------------------------

Hi,

As you probably know by now, I am attempting to build a genealogy database of ALL the Shoemaker branches. This includes many of the various spellings:- Schumacher, Schoonmaker, Shumaker, and so forth.

This Email UPDATE on the project is sent much earlier than I had expected. However, the project has reached a milestone that deserves some attention. The file, with all of the data I have so far entered is getting very large. Within a few weeks, it will be too large to fit onto a floppy disk, even after being compressed into a self-extracting ZIP file!!

Once the ZIPPED file becomes too large for a standard 1.44 floppy disk, it would mean that should anyone want a copy of the file, it could only be sent as an attached file with an Email message to other America Online members. (Naturally, it is reasonable that nearly anyone could use one of the many AOL 10-hour trial disks to join AOL long enough for me to send them a

copy of the file.)

So, if you would like a copy of the file (private use only) on disk, I will be more than happy to send you the GED file. If you have sent your own GED file to me (or a hard copy) for inclusion in the project, you are entitled to a `freebie'. Everyone else who would like a copy should send me a note, with $5 (cash is okay). My address is 273 Woodland, State College, PA 16803 I would appreciate it if all of the disk requests be sent as soon as possible, but NOT later than the 10th of September. (If I have promised you a copy of the file previously, it should be mailed by the end of the this month.)

Presently, the GED is just under 6MB is size, with more than 30,000 individuals. Nearly any good genealogy program should be able to import and display the file. (The file will be created by Family Tree Maker for Windows.)

Family members who are both AOL members and who own Family Tree Maker might be interested in receiving the data in FTM format, as an attached file via Email. I will be happy to do this, but be aware, it is nearly a 3MB file, even as a self expanding ZIP file, and will expand to more than 14MB!

For many with either slow modems or no access to AOL, this will be the last time to obtain a copy of this data economically.

--------------------------------

The data I have collected so far, exceeds what I have the time to input into the file. But several trends have developed.

More verifiable information is included on our early ancestors, than the later ones. There is a great deal of data and information yet to be discovered or submitted on individuals from about 1860 to present. In fact, if an individual could trace their immediate ancestors back 3-4 generations, it is now very likely that they could soon be linked into even earlier

ancestors.

Some individuals who have sent their data in, sent hard copy printouts. These tend to lack vital information; especially locations. Where the individuals lived, where they were born, married, and died, all help to verify potential links with other parts of the family. If these submissions could be elaborated on, it would be a great help.

The inclusion of maiden names is important. There might be 500 John Shoemaker's; of whom 35 married a `Mary'. But only one married Mary Kingsley!

If you haven't sent data - Perhaps you could consider doing so, sooner than later?? Even you are personally not that excited about the project, it is more than likely that someday a member of your part of the family will be!!

-------------------------

Finally, there is a dearth of what I call `fun' data that relates to many of the more modern relatives. For instance:- during WW-II, my mother worked at Moore McCormack lines, and helped put together the Murmansk convoys. My 4-F father worked in a Navy yard, stress testing anchors and other large metal naval devices. Once, when my father was in a father-son mood, he broke his leg, yet he drove a sports car *(4-speed) home, at times on only 2 wheels! Then we drove him to the hospital where they put a cast on from his ankle to his hip. That he went from an auto parts salesman to managing an entire Buick dealership is one part of his personality, but the

other facts tend to offer a hint at his personality.

It would be nice to be able to include a page or so on this kind of personal history, - for posterity & so those who follow us might know us better. So if you have sent data on your immediate family, you might want to expand it in this way.

------------------

Thank you for your time and interest.

Cordially,

Dick Shoemaker

VAN BIBBERS OF MASSACHUSETS

By Joanna Curtis <JBCurtis@aol.com>

I was working on another family in the VR's of Ipswich, MA and stumbled on these Van Bibber entries. I looked through the material I have and couldn't figure out who this "Capt. Isaac" is. I do a lot of work in MA and this is the first time I've seen a Van Bibber there.

1) Elizabeth, wife of Capt. Isaac VanBibber, d. 12 Aug 1737, age 23 years. p.699

2) Isaac Vanbebber & Mrs. Elizabeth Harris, Wid., intentions 22 Jan 1738. p.436

3) Mrs. Elizabeth Van Bibber & Isaac Balden of Sudbury, intentions 5 Feb 1745. p.436

Elizabeth Harris appears to be the dau. of Gyles & Agnes Cowes bn. 26 Mar 1691 in Ipswich, who md. Capt. John Harris in 1717. He d. 30 Dec 1736, aged 46. They had 7 children between 1718 and 1733, two of them named Gyles and Agnes. There are no Van Bibber births in the Ipswich records. Also no death for Isaac though he obviously died before

1745. It's interesting that he had a 23 yr. old wife in 1737 and then married a 47 yr. old widow in 1738. I always think of Van Bibbers as being in PA, MD, WV and points west, not New England.

VAN BIBBER - KENNAN - JOHNSON - MARTIN FAMILY

By Tony Popp <tpopp@TSO.Cin.IX.net>

Jacob Isaac Van Bebber, one of my wife's tenth-great grandfathers, was born in Krefeld, Holland (on the Rhine River), now part of Germany. He came to Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1687, after his a couple of his children came a few years earlier. Deborah Van Bibber came to America with her husband in 1683 who received an invitation from Quaker founder William Penn. Hermann was the husband of two of Jacob Isaacs daughters. Matthias came with his father in 1687, and Henry came in 1720.

In 1698, Jacob Isaac moved to Philadelphia and engaged in mercantile pursuits.

The Van Bibbers were Mennonites, but like many other early settlers, after their sojourn in the province, became somewhat unsettled in their faith.

Jacob Isaac was probably the son of Isaac Jacob (b. ~1610). Jacob Isaac and his wife died in Earlsville, Cecil County, Maryland and are buried in St. Stephen Parish.

Following is the family of Jacob Isaac Van Bebber:

Jacob Isaac Van Bebber (1640/9-1705) m. Christina ? (?/9-4-1711) on

Deborah (~1660/?) m. Hermann Op Den Graff and Dirk Keyser after 1704

Isaac Jacob Van Bebber (~1661/1723) m. Fronica (Veronica) Schumacher on 5-28-1690

Henry (?/1736) m. Katrina Bougard

Matthias (?/1739) m. Hermana Peterson on 11-17-1705

Marguerite (?/?) m. Jurriaen Bool

Lisbet Isaacs (?/?) m. Herman Op Den Graff

Isaac Jacob Van Bibber, son of Jacob Isaac, was born in Krefeld, Holland, now part of Germany. He came to Pennsylvania in 1684 and was one of the instrumental settlers who helped establish Germantown, Pennsylvania, the oldest German settlement in the United States. His decision to come to the United States was probably because of religious persecution. His family was Mennonite. Isaacs wife was from Germantown.

In 1704, Isaac moved his family to Bohemia Manor, Baltimore County (now Cecil

County), Maryland on the north bank of the Bohemia River (this empties into the Elk River, which flows into Chesapeake Bay) because of spiritual unrest.

There they became part of the Labadist community, which was the first Protestant mystic community in America. This religion was similar to the Quaker religion and was known for its severe discipline and punishments.

Members could not use fire for warmth, had to eat bad-tasting food, confess sins to an open assembly, and have no luxuries. As punishment, clothes were taken away. Some men sat at different tables during meals, not speaking to anyone. Men and women ate at different tables and slept in different rooms.

All property was held as common stock of the community.

Isaacs son, Henry, was a wealthy coffee merchant in Holland before coming to America. Isaac died in Cecil County.

Following is the family of Isaac Jacob Van Bibber:

Isaac Jacob Van Bibber (~1661/1723) m. Fronica (Veronica) Schumacher (~1672/1701+) on 5-28-1690

Isaac Jacob Jr. (7-15-1701/?)

Peter Van Bibber, son of Isaac Jacob, was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania and died in St. Stephen's Parish in Cecil County, Maryland. His wife Anna was born in Pennsylvania and died in Cecil County. Peter's sons, Peter, John, and Isaac, fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant at

Point Pleasant, Mason County, Virginia against Indians under the command of Cornstalk. This battle has often been recognized as the first battle of the American Revolution. Isaac died in the battle. John was a Captain and served in Indian wars, Dunmore's War, Colonial wars, and the Revolutionary War. Peter Jr. died in Mason County and John died in Kanawha County, Virginia.

The husband of Peters daughter Brigetta was killed by Indians. Brigetta was taken prisoner.

Following is the family of Peter Van Bibber:

Isaac Michael Vanbibber Sr., son of Peter Sr., was born in Cecil County, Maryland. His wife was, traditionally, from North Carolina. Isaac was killed at the famous Battle of Point Pleasant between the English colonists and Indians in Dunmore's War. After his death, his brother Peter adopted and raised one or more of his children.

Isaacs son, Peter Sr., married his first cousin, whom he lived with after his fathers death.

Isaacs son, Isaac Jr., was adopted by famous frontiersman Daniel Boone. Isaac Jr. married Boones granddaughter, Elizabeth Hay, who is generally recognized as the first white child born in Kentucky. He became wealthy operating a health spa with hotels and cabins in Montgomery County, Missouri. During the Indian wars, at age 13, Isaac Jr. served as a scout against the Indians in Virginia and was appointed a Major of the militia under Colonel Boone during

the Indian wars. During the War of 1812, he was a spy for Major Dodge. Isaac Jr. was an eccentric man. An interesting story about Isaac Jr. was told in the Missouri Historical Review: "Isaac Van Bibber was very eccentric. He omitted no opportunity to declare and enforce his belief that every six thousand years there was a recurrence of the same events in the worlds history, and of course, in the history of its inhabitants. He was active and persistent in the defense of this peculiar philosophy. One morning three young Kentuckians, having spent the night at the tavern and having heard Van Bibber's philosophy boldly declared, concluded to subject his professed faith to a business test.

Accordingly, they said, Now, Mr. Van Bibber, you believe we will all be here again, just as we are now, six thousand years hence. To test your belief in this doctrine we propose to give you our joint note for the amount of our bills, at ten percent interest, payable six thousand years after date. For a moment Van Bibber was in an embarrassing dilemma, but soon recovering, he replied, You are smart young fellows all the way from old Kaintuck, and I would at once accept your note and let you keep on, but I remember that all three of you were here six thousand years ago and left without paying your bills, and now I am afraid to trust you. So you will have to shell out. And

shell out they did.

The husband of Isaacs daughter, Martha, died in a bear hunt. Martha died in Salisbury Township in Sangamon County, Illinois. After Isaac Sr.'s death, his wife and five of children, including Peter, James, and John, moved to Claiborn County, Tennessee between 1785-1796 and helped establish Fort Yoakum on the Powell River in Washington County, Tennessee, in

present-day Dryden, Wise County, Tennessee. His wife remarried to William Griffey.

Isaac's son, John, owned 3250 acres in Claiborne County. His father-in-law was killed by Indians. John was a Lieutenant of the Russell County, Tennessee militia in 1786 and was appointed Captain of a company in Powell Valley in the state militia by the governor. He was instrumental in organizing Claiborne County in 1801 and was its first Justice of the Peace. He was also Justice of

the Peace in Granger County.

Matthias was friends with famous frontiersman Daniel Boone and named one of his children after him. He went with Boone to Missouri but soon returned east. Matthias uncle, Peter, was appointed guardian of Matthias, along with some of Isaacs other children, on 11-24-1774, after Isaac died at the battle of Point Pleasant on 10-10-1774. Some researchers believe that Peter was the genetic

father of Matthias. Also, some researchers believe Matthias wife, Margaret to be the daughter of David Robinson and Miriam Hamilton.

Matthias sons were well-known citizens of Nicholas County. Matthias is buried on the old Van Bibber farm, now owned by the heirs of Frank Grose, in Nicholas County.

QUERIES

From June Black < jblack@kih.net>

My name is June Black and I live in Marion Ky. My great grandmother was a Van Bibber, she married James Wagoner. They lived in Pope County, Illinois while raising their children. Her name is listed as Esther Van Bibber and she married James on May 4, 1841 in Pope County. I know some of his children moved to Missouri and they may have also. Have you come across

her name in your research? I would appreciate anything related to her or her relatives.

Thanks, June

From Lia Hallock Griffin <Griffinn@PacBell.net>

I received some information about Sarah Elizabeth Tillis "Sophia" from my cousin, who is no longer living. Unfortunately, as sometimes happens, the documentation -if there was any - has long since been lost or destroyed.

Sarah Elizabeth Tillis, called "Sophia" b. abt 1801 at Mason Co., WVA, m. 24 Jan 1828 at Pt Pleasant, Mason Co., WVA, d. 15 May 1883 at Mason Co., WVA, married Alonzo Hart, descendant of Deacon Stephen Hart.

I have the documentation on the Hart line, now I'm working on Sophia's line. Sophia is listed as daughter of Cabel Tillis and Elizabeth VanBibber. Everyone I inquire to (and I have made about 120 inquiries) about these parents tells me Elizabeth's husband's name was Richard. But I am wondering if there is yet another Elizabeth, as there are several Tillis families, or if Richard had a second name he used. Help! (Perhaps someone has a list of their other children?)
