Notes on John Harrison VAN BEBBER
HISTORY: Fields of Flowers and Forests of Firs, Woodland History Committee, published May 13, 1958, p. 227; copy provided by Lois Kullberg, Aug 1995: "John Henry Van Bebber of New York Dutch stock appears to have arrived on Lewis River with the earliest settlers. In 1853 or 54 he married Rhoda John and four children resulted from this union".
"For some reason, not passed on down the family history, John Henry disappeared. Probably the quiet Lewis River scene palled and he struck out for greener pastures. He must have been a reader of Captain Kidd and Jesse James stories and maybe he helped create the Jesse James legend. Anyway thru the mist of fact and fiction as related by his grandson Lloyd. He and some others outfitted a ship in San Francisco and were about ready to put to sea when grandfather was tipped off that the U. S. Government was preparing to arrest the entire crew as pirates. He beat the law to Mexico and I don't believe ever came back till after Grandmother Rhoda got a divorce in 1862, granted by the Washington Legislature. C. C. Bozarth was a member of the Legislature at that time and secured the passage of the bill that authorized the divorce." (Chris and Rhoda were married the following year.) Lloyd continues, "Later Grandfather was associated with the James boys, Jesse and Frank in Missouri and married Marinda Younger, full sister of Cole Younger, who is credited with being the brains of the James Boys gang. I remember my father saying that his father was the fastest and best shot with a rifle or revolver he had ever seen."
HISTORY: "Clark County Pioneers, A Centennial Salute," p. 135. [This account gives his middle name as Harrison not Henry, and says he was born in Louisiana of New York Dutch heritage.] He filed for Donation Land Claim of 314.36 acres in Twp. 5N, R 1E., Sec. 10 & 15 on the Lewis River in Clark County on October 6, 1853....He abandoned the property in the spring of 1854 and the claim was canceled by the Land Office. He and his wife separated and he eventually went to Nevada.
Notes on Francis Marion (Frank) VAN BEBBER
From "Clark County Pioneers: A Centennial Salute", by Clark Co. Genealogical Society, SLC FHL 979.786/H2c, profile of Francis "Frank" Marion Van Bebber, p 135: Francis "Frank" Marion Van Bebber grew up in Clark County just across the Lewis River from Woodland. He attended school about three months each year, first in a log schoolhouse to which he walked six miles each way and he played alto horn in the Woodland band. He worked on his step-father's farm until he was about nineteen years old and then in 1875 struck out on his own, working in the mines in Idaho for one year. He returned home for a short time and then joined his father working in the woods near Sumner, Washington, and also working in the mills in Pierce County for about three
years. Again he returned home and worked in his step-father's store in Woodland and also farmed.
"He married Zerelda Stewart from Ohio in 1876, daughter of C.H. and Clara Stewart of Martin's Bluff. In 1881 they went to Spokane and pioneered on a homestead 30 miles north of the city. While Frank proved up his claim he worked on the railroad and they remained in the area for eight years. Over the years Frank almost completed a road from his homestead to the town of
Spokane. He joined the Masons at Spokane in 1890 and later belonged to the lodge at Tacoma. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows and both he and his wife were members of the Order of Eastern Star.
"In 1892 Frank once again returned home and clerked in his step-father's store. He then went to Alaska where he lived for a period of twelve years. On his first trip to the Klondike he traveled over the Dyea Trail and shot the rapids at White Horse. For a time he acted as a pilot taking other boats through the dangerous rapids. He came away with a tidy sum and was
able to pay off his debts and invested in property. He returned to Alaska the following year and while at Nome he hauled freight for several years and was superintendent of dredging at the Three Friends Mine for four years. In 1909 he left Alaska and moved to Portland, Oregon where he became partners in the establishment of Leisure and Van Bebber, dealers in stirrups and
saddles. During the ten years he stayed in Portland he spent part of each year at his ranch in Spokane. In 1919 he bought his step-father's home and moved to Woodland.
HISTORY: Fields of Flowers and Forests of Firs, Woodland History Committee, published May 13, 1958, p. 227-228, from Lois Kullberg:
"Frank worked in his step-father's (C. C. Bozarth's) store - did prospecting around Mt. St. Helens in 1894 and 95 but this venture did not pan out. In 1882 he and his brother-in-law Jake Stewart took up homesteads 30 miles North of Spokane. They were poor and lived mostly on venison. (Frank like his father was a good shot.) In 1896 Frank made his first trip to the Klondike over the Dyea Trail or Chillcot pass. Quoting Lloyd again, "He (Frank) put his scow together with 5 Swedes at Lake Lindeman and was the first man in the party to shoot White Horse Rapids. He took 50 other boats through the rapids, as pilot for 50 or 150 dollars depending on the size of the boat. He was practically broke at Dyea but landed at Dawson with his entire outfit weighing about one ton and a trained team of 7 shepard (sic) dogs. He staked out some good claims and made a fair cleanup. (He) came back to Woodland in the fall with enough to clean up his debts and leave him a tidy sum, most of which he invested in property. He returned the next year to
find that during his absence his claims had been taken over by Sharpers and worked out. He prospected, worked claims, etc. till steamboats appeared on the Yukon at which time he worked on the boats, mostly as pilot. Later he went to Nome when they had the Beach strike".
He was foreman on the first dredge operated on Salmon River or anywhere in Alaska. Lloyd just returned from the sea, became fireman. Frank had the reputation of being the only one from this vicinity coming back with a full poke.

PENSION APPLICANTION OF JAMES VAN BIBBER
By Bruce Logan <blogan@zoomnet.net>
State of Mifouri - County of Callaway on this twentyeth day of May in the year eighteen hundred and thirty three personally came and appeared in open court before the County Court of Callaway County aforesaid now Sitting. James Van Bibber a resident of Nine Mile prarie Township in the County of Callaway aforesaid in the state of Mifouri aged Sixty six years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the beniefit of the Act of Congress dated June 7, 1832 - that he was born in he believes Halifax County Virginia, and before he can recollect removed with his father to a settlement in the Same State on Greenbriar River about one hundred and eighty miles from the mouth of the great Kanawa that he remained there for many years, that whilst he was living there he thinks in '81 the Shawnees and Mingo's having proposed to Col Thomas Lewis who commanded at the Mouth of the Kanawa to go over to Scioto Salt licks and meet them there in order to treat of peace, Col Lewis having accepted the proposal was proceeding thither with Several of his men where they were attacked by a party of the same tribes of indians at a place called Raccon Creek west of the Ohio and several of his men were Killed and himself taken prisoner, those who succeded in escaping having reported the capture of Col Lewis as soon as it was Known at the Settlements on Greenbriar a party of volunteer militia was raised in which this applicant was enrolled which under the Command of Captain John Vanbibber marched with the intention of rescuing Col Lewis who had Succeded whilst a prosoner in making a sort of treaty with his captors and the ballance of their tribe by who he had been released, the company after a considerable absence finding the object of their expedition obviated returned to greenbriar - this was in the year '81 - and it was probably some two years after this, the same tribes having again broken out into hostilities against the whites, this applicant together with the family having moved down to the Mouth of Kanawa he together with one of this cousins one day went out in Search of horses which were belled and hobbled at some distance from their habitation after searching for some time in the woods they heard the bells and going in the direction of the sound they supposed they had marched within ten paces of their horses when they sere fired upon by two indians and a french man in the guise of an inidan, who had found their horses and having taken off the hobbles and bells rang the bells in order to decoy whomsoever might go out in Search of the horses - the cousin of the appplicant was immediately killed but he himself having been missed succeded in making his escape to the fort.
In October '85 two of the brothers of this appplicant having gone out from the fort for the purpose of bringing in a bear that had been Killed were fired upon by the Indians, one of whom was left for dead and the other taken prisoner by the indians who after remaining in captivity abaout 11 months Succeded in making his escape and got into the Settlement -
The Country about the Mouth of the Kanawa being exposed to continual incurssions of the indians it became necessary to establish a regular System of defence which would protect the inhabitants from surprise and enable them to attend to the cultivation of their fields with some degree of security Accordingly a Company of the militia was ordered to be raised to be Kept in Service as rangers, scouts, spies. & during all that part of the year which is favorable to Indian Inroads Captain Leonard Cooper commanded that company and this applicant entered it as a volunteer at first when the company commenced operations in February '87 and was continually engaged in active, dangerous, and hard service until the following autumn about the last of November In this company my brother was a Liutenant and I was ensign - in the following Spring '88 I entered as a volunteer in the company commanded by Capt. Hugh Caperton - James Kelly Lieut ensign not reollected - we were out again in February and continued scouting, and occasionally skirmishing with the Indians until in Nov. of the same year - we were engaged all the time in active service affording protection to the Settlements and persuing when necefsary band of depredating indians - The following year '89 I again went out as a volunteer in the same service under the command of Capt. Moses Mann James Van Bibber & Lieut Morrice Reynolds Ensign and continued in it from February until November - I cannot say what was the number of days or months I served in there those campaigns but I very well recollect that I was paid by the genl govt. as I supposed, for 27 months service and therefore believe I must have served that length of time - If I ever rec'd a discharge in writing I have forgotten it - Col Lewis who resided at the Mouth of the Kanawa and had the Military Command of those Settlements was the only general officer with whom I was at all acquainted, the three companies in which I served were all subject to his orders.
I was born in the year 1766 on the 8th of May but have no record of my age
I am known to several persons as having seved as I mention, my Cousin Isaac Vanbibber who I expected to see here to day knows it perfectly well and Thomas Harrison Senr. Who is here present either knows it of his own knowledge or has had such undoubted evidence from the statements of other as is tantamount to actual knowledge - I am known to many other persons in ths county for I have lived here many years and have served as a spy in this country during the last war under the command of Genl Howard -
I have never before applied for a pension nor is my name on the pension roll of the agency of any State or of the United States - and I do hereby renounce all claim to pay or pension for revolutionary services except what may be granted me under the law of 7th of June Last -
I am well known to William Coates who has been a preacher of the gospel for many years in the country - I left Kentucky in 1803 and came to this country and have lived for the last fifteen years in this county - I am also well known to old Mr. Litton who is here present - I had a commission as ensign in one of the campaigns I have mentioned signed by a governor of Virginia but I have examined my papers for it and can not find it now - I suppose it is lost - I think it was in '95 that I removed from the mouth of Kanawa to Kentucky.
Sworn to and subscribed in open Court befor me Clerk of the Callaway County Court this 20th Day of May AD 1833 Jarvice [?] O. Hockaday Clerk
We William Coats - a clergyman, residing in the County of Calaway and Jeffry Litton and Nathan Kouns residing in the same county hereby cerfify that we are well aquainted James Vanbibber who has Subscribed and Swourn to the above declaration, that we believe him to be in the Sixty Seveth year of his age; that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have served as he states and that we concur in that opinion

QUERIES
From Steve Smith <begood@centuryinter.net>
I have a little info on the DAVIS family. I am a descendant, yet can not prove exact descent from Aaron DAVIS, Sr. According to my records, Aaron DAVIS had children: Harmon DAVIS, Sr., Thomas DAVIS, Aaron DAVIS, Jr., and Mary DAVIS. Also, Moses DAVIS, Sr., is most probably a son. Moses DAVIS married Winifred "Winnie" WALLEN, daughter of Elisha WALLEN, a long hunter, in GRAINGER County, TN. in 1799. This was actually present day CLAIBORNE County.
Thomas DAVIS married Parkey BERRY/YOAKUM, the widow of Robert YOAKUM. Robert YOAKUM was the son of George YOAKUM, I., and Martha VAN BIBBER. Robert was a deputy sheriff in CLAIBORNE County, a veteran of War of 1812, and he died in 1824, leaving Parkey with three children: Ewing B. YOAKUM, Mary Ann YOAKUM, and posthumous Robert G. YOAKUM. In 1827 she married Thomas YOAKUM and they had several children. Thomas died ca 1849 and left will to be found in the will books of CLAIBORNE County. I have copy.
I found a marriage record in CAMPBELL County for an Aaron DAVIS. I suppose it to be that of Aaron DAVIS, Jr., but do not know exactly what happened to Aaron. I believe he went to Southeast Tennessee.
Mary DAVIS married Isaac YOAKUM, an older brother of Robert. They had many children and lived in Powell Valley on land he purchased from his uncle, John VAN BEBBER. Their farms adjoined the DAVIS farms. Some of the DAVIS farms were purchased from John VAN BEBBER, also.
I suspect a relation with the VAN BEBBER's and DAVIS' lines. John VAN BEBBER
was the son of Isaac VAN BIBBER, Sr., and Sarah DAVIS. They were from the BOTETOURT/KANAWHA/GREENBRIER County regions of what is now West Virginia.
John's father was killed on Oct 10, 1774 in Battle of Point Pleasant. George YOAKUM also fought in that Battle. The children of Isaac and Sarah were minor ages. George later married Martha and they had 12 children. In 1785 these families left the Kanawha River region and settled in present day Dryden, VA in what is now LEE County. I suspect the mother, Sarah DAVIS/VAN BEBBER came with them. She had remarried to William GRIFFEY/GRIFFITH. They lived in this Powell River area for about ten or eleven years around YOAKUM Station and in 1796 came to CLAIBORNE County. John VAN BEBBER bought 1/2 of Lot B in the
HENDERSON Grant. He sold hundreds of acres to the DAVIS and YOAKUM family
immediately. I believe they were all related. Close by the VAN BEBBER farm was the Aaron DAVIS, Sr. farm. Records of the period show that William GRIFFEY came to CLAIBORNE County with them. They built and re-established YOAKUM Station near DAVIS Creek. My belief is that Sarah DAVIS and Aaron DAVIS were closely related, but have not found the records to prove this. All these people seemed to migrate together for protection against the Indians. John VAN BEBBER's father, Isaac; and George YOAKUM's father, Valentine "Felty",
were both killed by Indians. John married Margaret CHRISMAN in RUSSELL County,
VA. She was the orphan of Isaac CHRISMAN, also killed by Indians in 1776 in the LEE County area.
Harmon DAVIS married Elizabeth DERRABERRY. I believe I descend from him, yet
there is some confusion concerning his children. I believe Henry DAVIS was a son. Henry is not in the 1850 CLAIBORNE County Census records. He can be found in 1860 living next door. Harmon deeded his farm to Henry. Henry's wife was Hanna, from Georgia. Some of the children in the 1860 Census were also born in GA. Was Henry in Georgia in the 1850 Census time period???
In 1857 Mary Frances DAVIS married Absolum Green Berry SMITH, son of John
SMITH and Nancy ELLIOTT, originally from CARTER County, TN. Mary Frances DAVIS, called Polly, has been said to be the daughter of Harmon DAVIS. I seem to conclude from my records that Harmon did have a daughter named Mary but that she married William T. MOSS. The MOSS family was another family living in early CLAIBORNE County, on farms adjoining the YOAKUM, VAN BEBBER, and DAVIS farms. Records seem clearly evident that this older Mary, and not my Mary, was the daughter of Harmon. It seems to be evident by the 1830 and
1840 Census records that there were other DAVIS families in CLAIBORNE County in this area. They were most likely, also, related to Aaron DAVIS, and were probably children. I have never believed that we have a complete list of the children of Aaron and Rachel DAVIS.
Where was Mary Frances DAVIS in the 1850 Census???
Where was Henry DAVIS in the 1850 Census??
(Absolum) Green Berry "G.B." SMITH and Mary Frances "Polly" DAVIS were my
Great great grandparents. How is Mary related to Aaron DAVIS. Family tradition states that she was a descendant of the family and the DAVIS family has always claimed relation to the SMITH family.
Where was the DERRABERRY family originally from. A deed made out to
Elizabeth DERRABERRY/DAVIS was in WARREN County, TN. Were they form this part of the state?? How did Harmon DAVIS meet his wife??
There are several females of the DAVIS family in the 1850 and 1860 Census
records that I cannot identify. How do you identify??
I guess this enough to confuse you for now, ha. If you can help me sort any of this out I would appreciate. I believe the answers to some of the questions may lie in other unknown counties or states. Do you know where these places may be?

After reading the lineage of Isaac VanBebber and Sarah Davis I am wondering where my information on two of the children came from and how I might correct it in my file.
The two that I am in question of are:
John Emory Vanbebber born ca. 1775 in Russell Co., Va who married Minerva Jane Kincaid. They had the following children:
1. William M. VANBEBBER
2. Mary Jane VANBEBBER
3. Susan VANBEBBER
4. James Madison VANBEBBER
5. Nancy Tennessee VANBEBBER
Minerva Jane Kincaid was the d/o of William Harrison Kincaid and Susan Wilson, Powell Valley, Tn. Daughter Mary Jane VANBEBBER married Jessie GOFORTH born 1853 s/o James Preston GOFORTH and Sarah Jane JONES.
My second question is for a Martha VANBEBBER, who I questioned at being a daughter who married Henry Ewing YOAKUM, born 1820 Claiborne Co., Tn. I have no lineage for Henry Ewings ancestors but do his descendant Eliza Jane YOAKUM b. 1846 who married Urial JENNINGS
Could some kind soul help me out with this?

I would like information on Jesse Goforth who married Mary Jane Van Bibber in Claiborne Co. TN. Family history has it that he was killed in Bell CO, KY some time after 1885. I do not know where he is buried or how he was killed. I have heard a husband who came home to soon and caught them and shot Jesse. If any one has any history on Jesse death, I can fill you in on the years after his death.

I saw a note about your Van Bibber news letter. I had a great aunt that married a Van Bibber and moved to Oklahoma. She was born to Isaac Johnson and Carolina Mc Ginnis at Hood's Run, Greenup County, Kentucky. All of us in the Johnson clan are looking for her and her offspring. Can you help us?
She was one of eight children. Her sibblings were Mary Agnes Johnson (m. Archibald Artis), Julia F. Johnson (m. Samuel Downs), Syminia Inez Johnson (spouse unknown), Dr. Charles "Ellis" Johnson (m. Letitia Belle Eastham and Artie Miss Pilgrim), Sarah J. Johnson (spouse unknown), Ruby Johnson (m. Henry Taylor), Willard Johnson (no spouse), Robert Ivan Johnson (m. Elvina Marie Olsen) all these people were born in Hood's Run, Kentucky between the years of 1863 and 1880.
We have for the most part been scattered by the winds to all parts of this vast and beautiful country.
Thank you for any help that you can give me in this matter.
