First Name?
Confusion about the first name exists, census records show Lavinia, Lavinah, Savinah and other records show Sabrina and possibly Sabina.  Having started out in 2003 thinking  Sabina was the correct name I have recently re-examined the census images and think the 1871 definitely says Lavinah. and 1881 Savinah. So only in my mind dispute over the first letter. The transcriptors for her death record suggest its definitely a S, however they assess the name to be Sabrina which I think is incorrect.

Marriage 17th May 1837 Waddesdon

Note: Savinah mistakenly recorded or transcribed as Lavinia (as in 1871 census) suspect leading S been mistranslated to L so probably Savinah (close to Sabina phonetically)

1844  Farmer and Publican at New Inn, 21 High Street, Long Crendon,

1847  Publican at Golden Cross 15 High St
From Doreen
Hello Roger, thank you for your info regarding George Ing born 1800.
I lost track of him and Elizabeth after 1851.
I found that he was the Inn keeper of the Eight Bells public house in the High Street. he was listed in the 1847 Directory.
The Eight Bells is still there today.
I have been in contact with Gordon Smith, who has occasionally sent me snippets of info that he has received from other Ing connections, and I believe that George Ing went to London because his daughter Harletta, and her husband Thomas Brangwin had moved up there after Thomas who was a farmer, had sustained an injury to his hand and arm. Thomas died on 25th May 1853. The informant was George Ing.
Elizabeth Ing was the informant on the death certificate of Harletta's baby son, who died on the 31st July 1853, so I know that both George and Elizabeth were up in London then.
Harletta herself died on the 20th December 1853. Informant was Sarah Ing.
This info was from Sue Adamson.

my note: The informant mentioned above is likely Sarah Ing (nee Kingsley) wife of Thomas Ing 1801 who was brother to Harletta.

1853 Hammersmith - Year of Tragedy
In 1841 daughter Arletta Ing had married a Thomas Brangwin otp but a  Farmer of Brandsford Barn, Coleshill, Amersham, Bucks. They had 4 children born in Long Crendon and lived it seems for the most part in Long Crendon until just before 1853. It seems Thomas had a  accident and injured his arm and hand , Thomas died on May 25th 1853 and death was registered in St George Hanover Square London , George Ing was the informant.
Arletta was with child and  her fifth child son Thomas was born in 1853 and died on July 31 of that year at 1 Lavinia Terrace Starch Green Hammersmith London , Elizabeth Ing was the informant.
Arletta was then sick and its speculated that George and Elizabeth may have moved to London to look after her and the children. Arletta died on  December 20, 1853 at 1 Lavinia Terrace  aged 29.
From the death registration:
Erletta Brangwine died 20 December 1853 Aged 29
Place of death: 1 Lavinia Terrace, Starch Green, Hammersmith, Mdx
Widow of Thomas Brangwine, labourer.
Cause of death: Chronic uterine disease.
Informant: Sarah ING (Sarah Kingsley 1805 , aunt to Arletta), present at the death, of 1 Lavinia Terrace, Starch Green, Hammersmith, Mdx
Registered: 23-12-1853
So 1853 saw the death of Thomas, the birth and death of his son, also Thomas, and then the death of Arletta. This was followed by the death of Betsy their daughter the following year.

I have an ancestor who ran the New Inn pub in Long Crendon in Buckinghamshire in 1841.His name was George Ing. I would be very greatful for any information regarding this pub.

.... The premises in Burts Lane where my grandparents lived, I have since found out was originally the "Black Horse". ................... I don't know whether I am right, but when I was young, there was a pub - opposite the Harroell turn in the High Street - called the "Golden Cross". It was owned by a Mr & Mrs Eggleton, whose daughter moved into my parents house at 14 Hilltop (now demolished) when they purchased number 2 Sycamore Close in September 1967. I have a faint suspicion that the "Golden Cross" may have originally been the "New Inn", but can't confirm that at the moment. .................
Kind Regards,
Sylvia

This is a wild card but my paternal grandparents had a grocery/greengrocery business at 1 Burts Lane, Long Crendon. This was formerly an Inn and I think it may have been New Inn. Please get back to me regardless. I was born in Long Crendon (1947) and my family history in L. Crendon goes back hundreds of years.
Regards,
Sylvia.

Email from Jessie Ros
Hello,

Benjamin Bennett had a brother named Joseph Samuel Bennett born in 1785. His son William Bennett b. 1820 is my 2x Great Grandfather. I had noticed that you had the marriage for Benjamin's parents and that you have George listed as being born in 1752. I found a birth for him as well, closer to the marriage point and the birth is in 1756 (Oct 31) in Alverley or Claverley, Shropshire. I have a tree on the Bennett's and I am now making a good copy. I would love to share information if you'd like and I can be reached at jessiboo_17@hotmail.com

Joseph seems to have lived in France for at least the period 1826 to 1832. this evidenced by 1851 Census 2which records he has two daughters Maryann Tarner  born 1826 France and Harriet S Cook born 1832 France. Caroline his wife in 1851 is 30yrs of age and so not the mother of these girls.

58.. James PEASNALL

  images/brickmakers%20StokeBruerne-1900.jpg

James was from a family of brickmakers in Blisworth, Northants around the time the Railways came to this part of England (see Blisworth Tunnel) , subsequently a lot of brick was required and brickmakers probably very busy in the period C1800 -1850's . Father Thomas Peasnall(1768-1853) was a brickmaker  and owned and lived at brickfield/works in Blisworth. James sister Lucy married George Mallard who was also in the brickmaking business. . James son William Peasnall (1822-1899) was also a brickmaker in 1841 at the age of 15, but brickmaking in this area was coming to a close.

Some time between 1851 and 1861 the business may have been sold or closed down and James changed occupations to Agricultural labourer.
James location and abode's is tracked by the Grafton Estate Surveys of Blisworth and documented for later years in the listed houses of Blisworth web site created by Beryl Andrews.

Note:
Extract from the book Blisworth by Tony Marsh  in it he refers to a  Cottage and Brickworks that James might have lived  in C1840
"Naturally, employment arose at the canal but, apart from traders being able to pick up wholesale goods at the wharf, there is little evidence that the availability of freight running through gave rise to commercial growth of the village - with the exception of flour milling. There is one cottage industry legend that Blisworthians love and that centres on Candle Bridge, being the bridge that extends Mill Lane (now called Chapel Lane) towards Gayton. It is so called because a lady sat at the small wharf to the south of the bridge and sold candles for use in the tunnel. She is supposed to have lived in Candle Cottage. No one knows her name. There is a vernacular delight in embellishing place names in Blisworth and the bridge is now known also as Candlestick Bridge. The original Candle Cottage was a wooden hut, surviving until c. 1900, associated with a brick-making yard which held a closing sale in 1840 with 100,000 bricks, presumably because the modest sized field was exhausted. There were also brickyards at Blisworth Arm, near Milton and near Gayton."

1851 -1871  living at 40 High St Blisworth Northants also a listed house and here are records for that property
GRADE 2 LISTED
A one-storey house with attic, built late C15 or C16, of coursed & dressed limestone with a thatched roof and gabled ends. The left room was originally open to the roof, the floor & stack inserted in C17 and there appears to have been a third room on the right, but this has been demolished. The front wall continues to the right & forms the side wall of C20 porch on the gable end of the house.

LISTINGS 1949 A group ?38 – 44    Simple 1-storey limestone cottages with steep thatch roofs. Some have large late dormers, others have small attic windows carried up a little way into the thatch. The spacing & diversity of the simple casement windows, the occasional use of ironstone or sandstone, the variations in the roof line & the various brick chimney stacks intensify the picturesqueness of these simple buildings. The doorways are all on the north side away from the road.

NOTE: Probably the oldest remaining cottage in the village - was probably single level, perhaps out-house - see update information.

UPDATE: 1961 Right end of cottage demolished and detached from no 38 to make access through to the garden. Old front door converted to window and front wall extended into new porch.

60. John BROWN

John Brown (wife Deborah)  was landlord of the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Foxton from 1809 to about 1841.
In the 1830 Poll Book he was recorded as a Brickmaker while still a Landlord as well.
He  was also a given as a Brickmaker in 1841census and this is also the given occupation of son Thomas in 1841census. It seems they had  family brickmaking business which lasted until to sometime between 1841 and 1851 ending when John died possibly.

 1851 Census
John Brown    spouse Deborah      born abt 1789      location      head      Marston Trussel      Northamptonshire

from the History of the Shoulder of Mutton Pub  Foxton

In 1809, John Bent was replaced by a John Brown who was then recorded by the Justices each year until 1827 when Alehouse Recognizances were no longer required. John Brown was also a Brickmaker in Foxton and probably took over the pub in conjunction with his other activities in the village. He was involved in making some of the bricks used in building the canal, both at Debdale and in Foxton and it may have been the completion of these contracts which led him to become a publican to gain an alternative source of income. Although not immediately adjacent to the canal, the paddocks surrounding the “Shoulder of Mutton” would have come in useful for pasturing the boat horses used for hauling the barges on the newly opened canal whilst cargoes were being unloaded at the wharf or the boatmen obtained refreshment. The Union Canal from Leicester and the North had terminated at Debdale Wharf near Gumley in 1796 when the promoters ran short of money and it wasn’t until 1809 that it was continued through Foxton village and on to Market Harborough.

How long the “Shoulder of Mutton” existed as a public house before 1753 is not yet known but from the somewhat unusual position of the Inn, not being directly on one of the village streets, it seems likely that the building was originally a farmhouse. From the existence of a bridle way and footpath, which lead from the Inn to the canal both in Foxton and at Debdale, it is possible that the premises had some connection with the canal trade prior to the continuation through Foxton in 1809. It appears that John Brown combined his brickmaking business with the running of the “Shoulder of Mutton” as a John Brown of Foxton was recorded as a brickmaker in a Poll Book of 1830 and in the 1841 Census the only John Brown entered was a brickmaker living in Silver Street (Main Street). From the position of the entry in the Census Return, this John Brown and his wife Deborah were no doubt living at the “Shoulder of Mutton” premises but for some reason he preferred to be recorded as a “brickmaker” rather than as a “publican”. He was already 68 years old at the time of the Census and we know from a 1846 Trades Directory that a John Coleman had taken over the “Shoulder of Mutton” by then so probably John Brown was preparing to retire from the Inn around 1841 when the Census was taken.

According to notes left in the Chapel Minute Books, the Brown Family transferred their brickmaking business from Debdale to Marston Trussell around 1830, probably because their clay pit was exhausted and this would account for there being only the elderly John Brown and his wife left in Foxton at the time of the 1841 Census - the rest of the family being over the border in Northamptonshire. This fact may have been the reason for the Foxton Parish Vestry making inquiries in 1848 as to John Brown’s legal settlement in Foxton. He would probably have needed support from the parish in his old age and the Overseers were always anxious to reduce Poor Relief if possible by invoking the Settlement Laws of the time. John Brown does not appear to have been buried in either Foxton Churchyard or the Chapel Graveyard when he died so perhaps he was required to go to live with one of his family elsewhere.
