This is Amelia Bletsch's betrothal photo -- or at least was taken close to her marriage. Amelia Bletsch
Schneider was living with her son Roy on Texas Ave (the main street
through Mart, Texas) in the late 1930s. The site of their house is
currently being used (1999), and does not look as it did in those days.
The house site is within a quarter mile from the First Methodist Church
and a leisurely walk from the cemetery. Their grave site is located
opposite the entrance. By following the entry path into the cemetery,
and using the next to furthest row to the right, they will be
approximately in line with the large red barn that acts as the storage
shed for the cemetery. Other Schneiders are buried one row over and
closer to the large red barn. I also found a Bletsch and some Thomases,
but do not know if they are related at this time. (Todd Thomas -- 1999)
JHT said Amelia was an
incredibly good cook, who would have pies and cakes on a wooden buffet.
If you were in the mood, you could easily eat pies or cakes for
breakfast, as no one would care. Amelia also spoke in a thick German
accent, and was known to comment about a certain road to Godley, Texas
-- “Zis Road is Godley? Zer’ iz nussing godly about it!” Amelia and her
family was continuously entertaining clergy or churchmembers.
Edward William and Amelia (Bletsch) Schneider Hilton Thomas tells
the story of “Grandpa Snider” and his newcar. The boys were visiting
their grandfather, and going to see their uncle Roy Schneider. Edward
W. had a new Willis car.
Theywere cruising down the road, with Cecil Thomas egging their grandfather to go faster. There were dirt roads in those days. The day before, it had rained causing mud holes to litter the roadway. As their grandfather got the nerve to drive faster, he would hit large mudholes, causing the new car to be splattered with mud. Grandpawas having fun until Amelia (BLETSCH) Schneider apparently screamed ”Mein Gott im Himmel!” which caused grandpa Schneider to slowdown considerably |
The picture to the left is Rev. Eduard Schneider - Amelia's father in law. He was Methodist circuit preacher in south Texas from the 1840s-1880s. He was a Methodist minister in Paige, Texas, but also was instrumental in establishing a number of Methodist churches from Austin to San Antonio to Houston. He was the Methodist preacher in Bastrop, Texas, who influenced (converted?) Caroline Meier to become a Christian. Peter Bletsch and Caroline Meier met in Bastrop at the church where Eduard Schneider was preaching in 1855-56. Edward William Schneider (Amelia's husband) split from the Methodist Church on some doctrinal stance and began attending the Church of Christ in Mart, Texas, though his mother (Rosina) continued to worship in Perry. She is buried just yards away from Peter & Caroline's monuments. |
