STEPHEN BERNARD TAYLOR
Stephen Bernard Taylor, the sixth born child of Vincent Taylor and Sarah Durham was born September 7, 1832. Information on the death certificate states that Stephen was born in Halifax County, Virginia, which is on one of the migration paths to the West.
Spouse: Martha HARMON, b. ~1836, Virginia, died October 24, 1904. Buried in Martinsburg Cemetery, Audrain County, Missouri. Married: 19 August 1855, Warren Co., Missouri at the residence of Joseph Levesay. In the 1850 Warren County Missouri census, Stephen Bernard Taylor is enumerated at his father's residence, dwelling & residence number 189 while Martha Harmon, age 14, b~1836-VA, is found living at the residence of Clement Borwell (Boswell?) and wife Susan, natives of Maryland, dwelling & residence number 188. Martha's younger sister Rebecca, age 11, b. 1839, is also residing at the Borwell residence. In the 1870 census, a Nathan Harmon, age 38, b. 1822, VA is enumerated in the Stephen Bernard Taylor household, dwelling number 348.
The parents of Martha Harmon are unknown though two land patent records were issued in 1848, to James Harmon and William Harmon, both for land in Township 47 Range 2 West.
Stephen is living in Elkhorn, Warren County, Missouri in the 1880 census. Enumeration District 154, Sheet 1, Lines 10-18. Between the 1880 and 1900 census, Stephen moved to Shamrock Township, Callaway County, Missouri. The 1900 Federal census for Shamrock Township, Enumeration District 34, Sheet 9, Lines 28-31: Stephen, 67, wife Martha, 64, adopted son John W. Black, age 19, born 1880, Virginia; and grandson Lester born Sept. 1896-MO. Both Stephen and Martha can read, write, and speak English. They own a mortgaged farm and married for 44 years. Martha states she is the mother of eleven children of which eight are living by 1900.
Stephen Bernard Taylor died on May 1, 1913, at the home of his eldest daughter Mary Frances Taylor, wife of William Tesson in Truesdale, Warren County, Missouri. The Warrenton Banner obituary published Friday, May 9th states:
"The subject of this sketch was born in Halifax county, Virginia, September 25, 1832, and came to Missouri when at the age of six years. He was married to Miss Martha Harmon in 1852, .....she died October 24, 1904. This union was blessed with eleven children as follows: Mrs. William Tesson, Nate Taylor, (Mrs.) Charles Skinner, Mrs. J. Cantwell, James, Robert, Ephthy, Sarah, Henry and Porter Taylor, and Mrs. Thos. Bishop. Three of the children died in infancy. He also leaves 46 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. The body was taken to Martinsburg (Audrain County) and laid to rest by the side of his companion."
Note: Discrepancies (1) birth date for Stephen. The death certificate has September 7th as provided by grandson, Prosper Tesson, age 23, versus the Warrenton Banner obituary's September 25th date. (2) birthplace different than the rest of Stephen's siblings. Halifax County birthplace listed on death certificate and obituary might indicate the family had removed from King & Queen County sometime after the Mattaponi Church Roster of June 28, 1832 where Mrs. Taylor, wife of Vincent is listed. (3) Marriage date: Missouri marriages records 1855, obituary 1852.
In addition, it appears Stephen arrived in Missouri in 1838. Stephen's father Vincent was present in Missouri by at least July 1836.
Perhaps the death of his wife Sarah Durham required leaving the younger children with relatives until he had built a home.Stephen Bernard's name appears to be a combination of a place name: St. Stephen's Parish, King & Queen County, Virginia, and a Baptist minister, William Bernard Todd, who served both at the Mattaponi Baptist Church and Exol Baptist Church, St. Stephen's Parish, King & Queen County, Virginia.. (Ref: (1) Tidewater Virginia Families. "Todd" Volume 4. No. 4, pages 227-230. (2) History of Mattaponi Baptist Church, King and Queen County, Virginia, by William Thomas Hundley, D.D. 1928).
