Flory Fountain Taylor, born ca. 1818, Virginia, married Delilah McCann, born ca. 1818, in Warren County, Missouri on the 12 of September 1839. Fountain was the first born son of Vincent Taylor and Sarah Durham who came to Missouri in the fall of 1835 from King & Queen County, Virginia. Delilah McCann was the daughter of Neal McCann and Mary Shrum who came to Missouri in about 1815 and settled in that part of Montgomery County, Missouri that later became part of Warren County, Missouri.
Flory Fountain Taylor, wife Delilah McCann, with their two children John Lawrence Taylor, age 2, and Louisa Taylor, an infant, embarked on a journey up the Mississippi River about the year 1842. Their destination: the Territory of Wisconsin. Boarding a barge with their household goods, grains, and farm equipment in St. Louis, they would travel 300 miles north to the town of Cassville, Wisconsin seeking the fertile farmland along the Mississippi River to start a new life.
Fountain, a farmer, chose to buy 40 acres in southwestern corner of Grant County in Township 5 North, Range 5 West. A cash land patent was issued by the Mineral Point Land Office located 30 miles to the east of Beetown, on August 4th 1849, signed by Zachary Taylor. Their land would later become part of ( Beetown ), a farming and lead mining community. Delilah's two sisters Sarah McCann and Ruhama McCann also moved to the Wisconsin Territory in 1842.
The name Fountain is a variant spelling of the surname Fontaine. The most notable famous persons with this name are (1) Reverend James Fontaine, a French Huguenot, who was a member of the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe, and explored land west of the Allegheny Mountains in 1716. (2) Peter Fontaine, French Huguenot, an early land surveyor of Pittsylvania County, Virginia in the 1730s and Justice of the Peace, Halifax County, VA. and (3) James Fountain, an army officer killed in action, in 1790, against the Indians on the Maumee River near Fort Wayne, Indiana. Surname origin: French and English, and Caroline County, Maryland.
1850 - Beetown, Grant County, Wisconsin
Fountain and Delilah McCann Taylor are enumerated in the 1850 Federal Census in Beetown, Grant County, Wisconsin at dwelling number 402 Two more children were added to their family: Mary Taylor, b. ca. 1845, and Sarah Serene Taylor, b. ca. 1847.
Next door, Delilah's sister Sarah McCann, age 24, born ca. 1826, is enumerated in dwelling number 403: with husband, Jesse Cartwright, and four children. Jesse Cartwright, age 38, born ca. 1812, is a native of Tennessee. The four children are Minerva Cartwright, age 13, born ca. 1837 in Tennessee (from a previous marriage?), Mathew Cartwright, age 8, born 1842, Missouri, Elizabeth Cartwright, age 5, born ca 1845, Wisconsin, and William Cartwright, age 2, born ca. 1848, Wisconsin.
There are also a set of twins, John Neel and William P. Neel, born 1849, residing at the Jesse Cartwright residence along with their father Porter Neel, age 21, Kentucky. Porter Neel is the widower of Ruhama McCann, a sister of Delilah and Sarah McCann. Porter Neel married Ruhama McCann in 1848 in Beetown and appears to have died during the birth of the twin boys in 1849. One of the twins, William P. Neel died in infancy
Porter Neel and Jesse Cartwright joined in the Gold Rush to California in late 1849 or early 1850. Both Jesse Cartwright and Porter Neel were enumerated in the Wisconsin Federal Census, even though they were absent, and mining in California. Porter Neel was also enumerated in the California census. Jesse Cartwright died in California and Porter Neel returned to Wisconsin, marrying Sarah McCann Cartwright.
Beetown residents claiming Virginia as their native birthplace in 1850 included Lorenzo D. French, b. 1815; Benjamin Jeffers, b. 1824; and Fountain Taylor, b. 1818. Residents born in Missouri included Lionel B. Kinch, b. 1823; and William Grundy, b. 1835.
