       Conemaugh Township

When Conemaugh Twp. was created in February of 1801, Somerset County extended north covering half of present-day Cambria County. When Cambria County was created on March 26, 1804, Conemaugh Twp. was split in two, thus creating Conemaugh Twp., Cambria Co., and Conemaugh Twp., Somerset Co. Today, Conemaugh Twp. is located in the northwest corner of Somerset Co. and is bounded by Paint Twp. in the east, Quemahoning Twp. to the southeast, Jenner Twp. to the south, Fairfield Twp., Westmoreland Co. to the west, and Upper Yoder, Richland and Stonycreek Townships, Cambria Co. in the north.

Conemaugh is an Indian name which meant "long fishing place." The main villages are Davidsville, Hollsopple and Jerome. The township boasts a wide variety of religions, cultures and backgrounds, but its roots in the Amish and Mennonite Community are still ever-present.

Many of the early families who settled in the township included Alwine, Berkey, Blough, Border, Croyle, Eash, Gindlesperger, Hershberger, Howard, Johns, Kaufman, Keim, Livingston, Lehman, Miller, Mishler, Reed, Riffle, Stahl, Stutzman, Thomas, Weaver and Yoder.
