Information I have lists
Martha Ellen HESSELGESSER married to John NEWCOM 11 Dec, 1884. My info comes
from Rex_Ulmer@@ambassador.edu who you should contact asap. If you have a fax
I will send copies of my papers. The thrust of my work has been to identify
the immigrant who I believe to be Jacob H. who appears in Ben Franklin's
Almanac in 1751as a runaway indentured servant in Bucks Co. Pa. Aside from
Rex and I, you are the only people I know who are doing HESSELGESSER so maybe
we can work together on this. I look forward to hearing from you. Jim

Notes for Child: Robert HESSELGESSERRobert Hesselgesser:
Quakers
Brought the first Belgian stallion to the United States. Unloaded it off the ship in Philadelphia and the next morning its throat was cut. He owned a stud barn in Philadelphia and had to go get another one.
Trader and auctioneer, went to Scotland annually to buy a ship load of sheep. He would then drive the sheep from Philadelpia with his dogs and pack mules to Santa Fe, Mexico. (New Mexico later) One year he was late getting back from Santa Fe. When asked by his wife, why he was late. The man of few words said simply, " they stole my dogs in Santa Fe." She asked him what he did next. He said, " I went after them."
Where did they go, she asked. He said, "California." She then asked "Did you get the dogs back?" He stated, " I'm back, aint I."
Many of his sons settled in Nebraska. There are still many Hesselgessers in Butler County, PA
Source: Personal Recollection of Rex Newcom on 12/25/1996, a great grandson, of stories told to him by his grandmother "Mellie" Hesselgesser Newcom about her father, Robert Hesselgesser. These stories inspired Rex who became one of America's most well known auctioneers in the 1970-90s.
