Carl Martin English, son of William English and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Head, was born on 4 July 1891 in Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio.2,3,4
Carl worked for Grace Lines, traveling all over the world. After a while he just disappeared and no one apparently ever heard from him again.3 He was baptized on 12 July 1891 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio, by Father Michael Pütz.1
Carl was enumerated as the son of William English on the 1900 U.S. Census of Ohio he was listed as an eight-year-old white male born in July 1891 in Ohio. He attended school for 10 months during the year.2
Carl was enumerated as the son of Elizabeth "Lizzie" Head on the 1910 U.S. Census of Ohio he was listed as an 18-year-old white male born in Ohio. He was employed as a telgraph operator for a railroad.5 Carl Martin English lived with Elizabeth "Lizzie" Head in 1910 at 384 East Front Street in Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio.5 Carl Martin English never married.3
He lived with his parent, Elizabeth, in 1916 at 334 East Main Street in Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio.6
Carl Martin was employed in in 1916 at Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.6 He lived in June 1917 in The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon, Known as the end of the Oregon Trail, The Dalles was where pioneers loaded their wagons onto rafts or barges and floated down the Columbia to the mouth of the Willamette River, then upriver to Oregon City. The Barlow Trail was constructed later to permit an overland crossing.
The Dalles was also the site of Fort Dalles. Established in 1850 to protect immigrants after the Whitman massacre, it was the only military post between the Pacific Coast and Wyoming. The only building left of Fort Dalles is the Surgeon's Quarters, which has been incorporated into the Fort Dalles Museum. Also in the town is Klindt's which is Oregon's oldest bookstore. Established in 1870, it still has the original wood floors, and oak and plate glass display cases. (http://www.el.com/to/thedalles/)
The City of The Dalles, Oregon, is situated in the north-central part of the state on the Columbia River, the nation's second largest river. It is the county seat and the largest community in Wasco County. The Dalles is one of Oregon's most historical cities and was known earlier in its history as the town at the end of the Oregon Trail. Archeological evidence suggests the area have been inhabited more or less continuously for more than 10,000 years. Strategically located on the Columbia River and bordered by the Cascade Mountains to the West, The Dalles provides an ideal distribution or manufacturing setting with available riverside locations, as well as bulk container and international shipping options. It has historically been an economic hub of the Pacific Northwest, linking major transportation routes between Eastern and Southern Oregon and Washington State. It offers residents the pleasure of rural living while providing the advantages of access to metropolitan amenities in Portland, only 80 miles to the west. (http://www.ci.the-dalles.or.us/).4
