Elizabeth English Tombstone.17
From a biography written by Pauline English, Elizabeth's grand-daughter-in-law:
Just down the street from William English and the Honecks on East Washington St., lived Martin and Margaret Head and their family of one son and four daughters, including Lizzie, who was five years younger than William English. When she was seventeen, Willie gave her a cameo ring. Later he gave her the cross on a chain that she is wearing in the tintype.
Lizzie was only eighteen years old when she and Willie, at 23, were married. They had more than twenty-two good years together until, in 1903 or 1904, he began to suffer from Bright's disease. His bouts of illness, when he couldn't work, became more frequent. Their son, Leo, went to work at Spengler's grocery before finishing high school, in order to help out. William was not able to work at all for a year and a half before his death in 1907. Helen, the youngest, was just six years old when her father died. Elizabeth was a widow for all the years after, until she died in 1948, almost eight-four years old.
How did she manage? For a while she went to work in a dry goods store downtown. Also, she was well known for her cakes, and supplemented their income by baking her famous angel food cakes to order, as well as wedding cakes. They had a vegetable garden and preserved much for the winter, putting potatoes, apples, etc. down in a root cellar. They sun dried green beans, which Ray raved about all his life. No beans had ever tasted as good since, as the one he remembered from his youth. Later, as the children grew and left, she did what many widows in those days did. She took in borders. At that time, a bachelor away from home didn't take an apartment. He lived in a boarding house, or boarded with some family. And many a widow who owned her own home made use of it in that way. Earl Grieser boarded with her in 1924, when the Creamery was incorporated, until 1930. He was from Holgate, Ohio. Another who boarded there in the '20's was Cyril Bennis, Regina's nephew. Dick English also boarded with his grandmother for a time. Helen worked at the Creamery when she was old enough, helping out on Saturdays. Later she worked for the Signal, Napoleon's newspaper, for eight years. Early in the second week of June, 1948 Grandma began to feel vaguely unwell and tired, so a young girl, Rita Eisel, was engaged to stay with her. A week or so later, I became ill (it was shortly before Therese was born) and Grandma insisted that Rita be sent to stay with me, and her grand-daughter, Pat Grim, came to help her.
I was sick for two weeks, until the night before Therese was born, when I began to feel much better. Therese arrived about noon on June 30th. I was told that Grandma said several times that day, "I wonder how Polly is doing." Early in the evening, after she and Pat had supper, she told Pat she was going to lie down. She asked her to call her mother (Helen), and Leo and Ray in Toledo, and to call the priest. This Pat did, and at nine o'clock, having received the last sacraments, with all her family around her, she died. How did she know she was going to die? I have marveled at such a death ever since.18,3
