C. Lewis Propst - Longtime Kirkwood teacher - C. Lewis Propst teacher in Kirkwood, died Thursday (March 1, 2001) of complications from pneumonia at Lutheran Convalescent Home. He was 88 and had lived in Kirkwood. A Native of Annapolis, Mo., Mr. Propst began teaching at a school there in the early 1930s. He then taught at schools in House Springs and Pilot Knob, Mo., before he moved to the old Grant School in the Webster Groves School District in 1939. He taught there for several years before he was hired at Afton High School. In 1947, he moved to the Kirkwood School District, where he taught social studies at Kirkwood High School. In 1955, he went to Nipher Middle School where he taught for the next 20 years. He taught briefly at North Middle School before he retired in 1978. After he retired, Mr. Probst owned and operated Laurel Acres, a mobile home park in High Ridge. Mr. Propst was a 33rd Degree Mason and a Shriner. In 1941 Mr. Propst graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Missouri at Columbia. His wife, Viola W. Propst, was a longtime teacher in Webster Groves. She died in 1995. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road, Kirkwood. A funeral service will be held at noon Monday at Bryson Funeral Home, Highway 21, Pilot Knob, Mo., with visitation from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be at Arcadia Valley Memorial Cemetery in Arcadia, Mo. Among the survivors are a daughter, Verna Wiseheart of Gerald; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2001 South Lindbergh Boulevard, St. Louis, Mo. 63131

The driver of the pleasure car speeded up and drove away without ascertaining the amount of damage or nature of the injuries. The truck was very badly damaged. Francis Behm happened along shortly after the accident. He brought the driver of the machine and injured boy to Edwardsville and then returned to get the machine. When he arrived in Edwardsville with the car the man and boy had departed for their home. The owner left word he would return to Edwardsville the next day.21

Francis was hired by L. H. Gehlert of Union, Missouri, sheriff of Franklin county to accompany him on a round trip to Union and Hermann to obtain copies of some records to use in a trial. It was a distance of 150 miles each way and a great deal of the trip over rough roads. They left Edwardsville at 3:30 p.m. on October 10, 1922 and reached Union at 6:30 p.m.. An hour or so was spent there. They then drove to Hermann and had the certificate completed, returning to Union about midnight. The men slept until 4:30 a. m. and then started back to Edwardsville, reaching there at 7:30. Sheriff Gehlert had been sheriff of Franklin county for twenty years and had "adjusted the noose around the necks of six criminals and sprung the trap which plunged them into eternity."23
An advertisement in the Intelligencer on October 11, 1922 stated "Behm's Service Station - Storage, Gasoline, Oils, Tires and Washings, Day and Night Service, Any Time, We never Sleep - If you have any Road Trouble Phone us for Quick Service."24

The popular-priced companion car was the rage of the post World War I automotive market. Paige-Detroit Motors, builders of the mid-priced Paige automobile created the Jewett. It was named after the chairman and founder of the company, Harry Jewett. Production began in March 1922 with a batch of 500 touring cars. Sedan production began in May, with roadster and coupe models introduced later. It was produced until 1927 when Jewett decided he had enough and sold the company to the Graham brothers who reorganized it as Graham-Paige Motors Corporation.25,26,27,28,29

During January, 1924 the city of Edwardsville sent out a plea for donations to a fund which provided food for a great number of wanderers who gathered at the city hall each evening. The fund had nearly been exhausted. Francis contributed $1.00 to the fund.30
A notice in the Edwardsville Intelligencer on March 11, 1924 stated NOTICE - All persons owing accounts with us kindly settle same as soon as possible thereby permitting us to close up our affairs relative to dissolving our partnership. Behm Service Station.31

Apparently by May 1927 Francis was no longer a partner with his uncle, John. An article in the Edwardsville Intelligencer stated that the building at the corner of Vandalia and Johnson streets, once used as the temporary court house of Madison county and later converted into a garage was sold to R. C. Harwood by John Behm of Vienna, Missouri. Francis was not listed as a co-owner. Mr. Harwood had been a tenant of the building for several years operating under the name of the White Way Garage.32

It was named after the chairman and founder of the company, Harry Jewett. Production began in March 1922 with a batch of 500 touring cars. Sedan production began in May, with roadster and coupe models introduced later. It was produced until 1927 when Jewett decided he had enough and sold the company to the Graham brothers who reorganized it as Graham-Paige Motors Corporation.25,26,27,28,29
During January, 1924 the city of Edwardsville sent out a plea for donations to a fund which provided food for a great number of wanderers who gathered at the city hall each evening. The fund had nearly been exhausted. Francis contributed $1.00 to the fund.30
A notice in the Edwardsville Intelligencer on March 11, 1924 stated NOTICE - All persons owing accounts with us kindly settle same as soon as possible thereby permitting us to close up our affairs relative to dissolving our partnership. Behm Service Station.31
Apparently by May 1927 Francis was no longer a partner with his uncle, John. An article in the Edwardsville Intelligencer stated that the building at the corner of Vandalia and Johnson streets, once used as the temporary court house of Madison county and later converted into a garage was sold to R. C. Harwood by John Behm of Vienna, Missouri. Francis was not listed as a co-owner. Mr. Harwood had been a tenant of the building for several years operating under the name of the White Way Garage.32
Elizabeth and Francis Behm lived in 1931 in Pacific, Franklin County, Missouri. Residing with them were, their children Harold and Woodrow.33 Francis Behm attended the funeral of Judge John Philip Bëhm on 12 April 1933 at Visitation Catholic Cemetery, Vienna, Maries County, Missouri.34
Francis married Hazel Robinson, daughter of Francis Robinson, circa 1935.35 His wife, Hazel Robinson, died on 29 August 1939. He was the informant on her death certificate.35 Francis Behm lived in October 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri.36
Francis died on 12 September 1968 in Vienna, Maries County, Missouri, at age 78.2,3 He was buried in September 1968 in Vienna Public Cemetery in Vienna, Maries County, Missouri.37,38
