Salem United Methodist Church (Ballwin MO) is located at 1482 Manchester Road in Ballwin, St. Louis County, Missouri.
When John Ball laid out the town of Ballwin in 1837, he chose one block as a site for a meeting house for the Methodist Episcopal Congregation (St. Louis German Conference for the ME Church), and a second block for a burying ground.
In 1846, Reverend Henry, Koeneke, Sr., district Superintendent of the St. Louis District, sent Reverend H. Hohmann to be the first preacher. The founding of the congregation was in 1847, when the goup secured ists seal of organization. By 1855 they erected a small white frame building, close to the present location.
The present buick sanctuary was constructed in 1870 at a cost of $4,500. It was built with bricks furnished by Mr. Kessler. These buicks were made by his slaves at what is now know as the "Barn at Lucerne."1

In 1856 the building of a larger church became necessary and a new cornerstone was laid May 18, 1856. The new church was dedicated November 28, 1858.
At a meeting held May 22, 1897, it was decided that it was necessary to construct another larger church. The cornerstone was laid by Archbishop kain on May 15, 1898 amid a concourse of 25,0000 people. The new church was dedicated October 22, 1899 on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the congregation.2,3

1856-1991. German originally predominated. Closed parish - records now at the Archdiocesan Archives. Known as the "Cathedral of the North Side," and organized as an off-shoot of St. Joseph's. Before 1855 the German settlers from this territory were attending either St. Joseph's Church at 11th and Biddle Streets, or Most Holy Trinity CHruch at 14th and Malinckrodt. Liborius was the sixth German parish in St. Louis. On October 30, 1855 a lot was purchased on North Market and Hogan streets and the cornerstone of the new church was laid by Vicar-General Melcher on June 15, 1856. The building was dedicated on January 25, 1857 and consecrated by Archbishop Kenrick on July 17, 1859. Growth soon mae a larger church necessary and the cornerstone was laid on June 10, 1888, by Vicar-General Henry Muehlsiepen. On November 24, 1889, the new church was dedicated. Orignal parishioners were immigrants from Westphalia, Oldenburg and Hanover with a few families from Southern Germany. The parish was so closely associated with Paderborn that it was dedicated to St. Liborius, the patron saint of Paderborn. The area around the church was known as "Little Paderborn."2,3
