From a narrative written by Alvira Lochhaas Jackson:
"Aunt Annie worked as a sales girl in a dry goods store in Collinsville. She worked there for many years. 50 years comes to mind. She was a thin wiry woman always on the go. She Both worked and kept house after Aunt Lou died and the house was always spotless. She had so many interesting knick knacks and her scarves were always starched and ironed perfectly. she must also have been a wonderful cook as my feelings are that I enjoyed eating at her table. She cooked in the summer kitchen in the summer time and we ate in the dining room or kitchen in the house. I know it was explained that the summer kitchen kept the heat from cooking out of the house because in those days people cocked on a coal kitchen stove, or sometimes a coal oil stove. Either one would heat up the kitchen. Aunt Annie lived to be 99 years old and was in sound mind till the last. She lived in the Lutheran Alteheim for quite a few years. Mother and I visited her a lot, especially when Bertha was in the same home. Aunt Annie would be so proud that she did not have scoliosis or any arthritis that caused crippling. She would stand and pat herself on the back and say 'how many 9-plus year old woman can do this?17'" She never married.1

On Wednesday, August 3, 1932 at 11:00 p.m. Elmer and a young lady friend were held up on the Edwardsville-Poag road east of the Bohm School. They were driving about 35 miles an hour when the bandit car speeded past them and forced Schoettle off of the pavement. The holdup was not reported to authorities.
The young lady saved a ring she was wearing, hiding it before the bandits stopped the automobile. Young Schoettle had a sum of money which he secreted and the thieves obtained only a $1 bill, one of the old style which was being carried as a souvenir.
The thieves were heavily armed and unmasked. They remained out of the lights of the automobiles and the victims were unable to get descriptions of the three men.
The bandits expressed anger at the small amount they received. The victims of the robbery were forced to accompany them for a ride of several miles, finally stopping at Canal Bridge north of Poag. At that point they were put out of the automobile and warned to be quiet.
After the thieves drove away the victims called George Lewis, a theater manager, who went to Poag to get them. Elmer's car was recovered on the trip back to Edwardsville.
The next day police arrested three men who were implicated in a string of robberies:
Charles Burke alias Jack Allen wanted at Farmington, Missouri in connection with the dynamiting of the jail and release of a number of prisoners. Burke was a brother of Robert Burke, alias Ben Jones then serving time at the Southern Illinois Penitentiary at Chester.
Tom Robert and James Ford. Later Roberts admitted his name is Charles Thompson and Ford said his correct name was Lowry Pearce of Wood River. Pierce was the driver of the car.
When questioned by the Edwardsville police Elmer was not able to identify either the men or the old style large dollar bill found in their possession. According to officers Charles Thompson alias Tom Roberts admitted that he and Charles Burke were the two who led up Schoettle. Thompson said that a wrist watch taken from Schoettle was worn by Burke until after arrests at Collinsville when Burke threw the watch away.13,14,15
