GERMAN IMMIGRANTS, LOVE OF BLOOMS NURTURE TRADITION OF FLORAL INDUSTRY

A large population of German immigrants and a European love for flowers in the home may have combined to produce a tradition of an active floral industry in Des Peres.

By the turn of the century, 315,000 square feet of greenhouses were growing flowers within the current city limits, according to "A History of Des Peres" compiled by Carl F. Stolwyk and Florence G. Stolwyk. Among the greenhouses were:

William August Meier Greenhouses - Meier, the first florist in Des Peres, started a truck farm in 1877 on Manchester Road east of Lockett Lane. He also grew field flowers. In 1904 he constructed the first greenhouses in Des Peres.
In September, 1947, Harold and Herbert Ahner acquired the greenhouses. They operate today as Ahner's Florist and Greenhouses.

William J. Meier Greenhouses - The eldest son of William August Meier bought land near his father's property and started his greenhouses in 1906 on eight acres.

Charles Meier Greenhouses - William August Meier's youngest son built his home and greenhouses near his brother's. After the 1904 World's Fair, Charles Meier bought two greenhouses that had been in the horticulture exhibit and moved them to his property. These greenhouses were bought by John and George Tomasovic, who grew prize-winning carnations. The wholesale business operates today as John L. Tom Sr. Florist Inc.

Ellebrecht-Eime Greenhouse - Louis Ellebrecht followed the Meiers in the floral business. Later Gottlieb Eime bought the business. Eime retired in 1952 and sold part of the property for the development of the Harwood Plaza Shopping Center.

Goebel Greenhouses - Philip J. Goebel began a florist business just after the turn of the century. He became one of the largest growers in the state.t He developed and patented the brilliant red carnation "Fire Chief." His property was sold in 1960, and the Schnucks store
at Manchester near Lindemann Road now sits on the site.

Joseph Deutschmann Greenhouses - Joseph Deutschmann went into the wholesale floral business when his father gave him five acres and two greenhouses in the 11000 block of Manchester Road in 1911.

George F. Deutschmann Greenhouses - He built three greenhouses on land his father gave him from the original Deutschmann farm. Family members joined him, and the business grew to 25 greenhouses with more than 100,000 square feet under glass. Family members continue the business today.

Wissman Greenhouses - Alvin Wissman worked for George Deutschmann and sold most of what he grew to the Deutschmanns from 1947 to 1957. His business was near Manchester and Grupp roads.

Schlegel Greenhouse - Ernest Schlegel also worked for the Deutschmanns. He operated a greenhouse and several cold frames on Manchester Road near Grupp road.

Eckelmann Greenhouses - William Eckelmann bought 13 acres of the Borcherding Estate off Ballas Road just north of Manchester. Eckelmann started with his speciality, asparagus. In 1981, he built his first greenhouses on Eckelmann Lane. The home and greenhouses were later razed for part of Berkley Manor subdivision. The Jost family continues the business today.
