Flames caught her clothing and instantly enveloped her. Those around rushed to the rescue and her son Lawrence swiftly procured bed covers and smothered the flames but, alas, too late to save the victim. Remnants of clothing had to be cut off. Dr. Jones was summoned quickly and all possible efforts were made to save her life, but about 9 1/2 hours after the accident death came. Mrs. Volmert retained full consciousness sufficiently long enough to receive all the rites of the church. Her last hours were quiet and she is said to have slept away into death..6,3 Her obituary was published in the Maries County Gazette in April 1928.8 Her obituary stated:
