Christina Mohr, daughter of Johann Mohr and Anna Catherine Elisabeth Schulte, was born on 5 February 1855 in Washington Township, Westphalia, Osage County, Missouri.3,4,1,5 Christina Mohr moved in 1867 from Westphalia, Missouri to St. Louis, Missouri. She relocated to St. Louis after the death of her parents to find work.6
Christina married Henry Joseph Volmert, son of Herman W. Volmert and Gertrude Ost, on 17 July 1877 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Westphalia, Osage County, Missouri.6,4
Christina was enumerated as the wife of Henry Joseph Volmert under the name of "Christina Volmert" on the 1900 U. S. Census for Jackson Township, Maries County, Missouri. She was listed as a married 45-year-old womand born in Missouri. She had been married for 28 years and had twelve children, eight of whom were still living.4
Christina was enumerated as the wife of Henry Joseph Volmert under the name of "Christina Volmert" on the 1920 U. S. Census for Jackson Township, Missouri. She was listed as a married 65-year-old woman born in Missouri.7
Christina died on 15 April 1928 at age 73 on Tuesday close to the noon hour Grandma Volmert, in her usual anxiety to share the work with her children, attempted to assist at makeing soap over a fire in the open. Flames caught her clothing and instantly enveloped her. Those around rushed to the rescue and her son Lawrence swiftly procured bed covers and smothered the flames but, alas, too late to save the victim. Remnants of clothing had to be cut off. Dr. Jones was summoned quickly and all possible efforts were made to save her life, but about 9 1/2 hours after the accident death came. Mrs. Volmert retained full consciousness sufficiently long enough to receive all the rites of the church. Her last hours were quiet and she is said to have slept away into death..6,3 Her obituary was published in the Maries County Gazette in April 1928.8 Her obituary stated:
Mrs. Henry Volmert 73, a prominent resident of Vienna, died at 8:30 Tuesday night from burns she received while at work in the year of her home.
Mrs. Volmert had been assisting her daughter in making soap and apparently stepped to near the wood fire which had been kindled under the kettle. Her dress caught and before she could beat out the flames and before help could reach her, her clothing had been burned from her and she suffered injuries which caused her death.
Mrs. Volmert was born in Westphalia and 53 years ago was married to Henry Volmert. A year after their marriage they settled in Vienna where they have made their home since that time, becoming prominent residents and among the substantial families of the community.
She is mourned by the following daughters: Mrs. H. Reinsch, of Washington; Mrs Louis Lock, Argyle; Mrs. W. Fitzpatrick, Argyle; Mrs, F. J. Guilbault, St; Mrs. F. J. Stratman, of Vienna; three sons: H. H. Volmert, Ben C. and Lawrence Volmert all of Vienna.
The funeral will take place from the Catholic church at Vienna at 9 o'clock Friday morning
