          Joseph Aurther Copeland, son of James Oliver "Ollie" Copeland and Ida A. Kremmel, was born on 25 September 1920 in Maries County, Missouri.2
     He lived with his parents, Ida and James, in 1930 at Jackson Township in Maries County, Missouri.3
     Joseph was enumerated as the son of James Oliver "Ollie" Copeland on the 1930 U.S. Census of Jackson Township, Missouri, listed as a nine-year-old boy born in Missouri as were his parents.3
     Joseph married Madeline Marcella Duke, daughter of Carrell Duke and Katherine L. Weider, on 30 August 1941 at Waynesville, Pulaski County, Missouri.2
     In 1943 Joe was drafted in the Army and trained in the 698th Infantry Battalion at Camp Roberts, California. From there he left Long Beach, landing at Bombay, India and spent two and one-half years in Burma, India and China in the Combat Military Police in World War II.2 Joseph Aurther Copeland and Madeline Marcella Duke moved in 1946 from Vienna to Summerfield, Maries County, Missouri.4 He and Madeline Marcella Duke moved in 1953 from Summerfield to Vienna, Maries County, Missouri. Moving with Joseph were Marcella Marie Copeland.4
