Oscar F. Horstmann, son of Christian Horstmann and Anna "Minnie" Wesemann, was born in 1895 in Madison County, Illinois.1
Oscar was enumerated as the son of Christian Horstmann on the 1910 U. S. Census for Pleasant Ridge, Madison County, Illinois. He was listed as a 15-year-old male born in Illinois.1
Oscar F. Horstmann attended a party held by Henry Dannenberg and Emma Dannenberg on 6 May 1916 at Plesant Ridge, Madison County, Illinois.2
A party was held in honor of Oscar F. Horstmann to celebrate his 21st birthday by Christian Horstmann and Anna Horstmann on 20 May 1916. Those attending included Frieda Diepholz, Anna Louise Wilhelmine Clara Kosten, Anna Maria Catharine Kosten, Lizzie Horstmann, Charles Stanley Gerstenecker, Robert Otto Hecht, Louis Deterding, William D. In October 1922 a jury in the circuit court returned a verdict for eight farmers living west of Maryville and who had a partnership doing business under the name of the Pleasant Ridge Threshing Machine Company and against Edward whitson of St. Louis who was asking damages for the loss of his left leg at the knee. He claimed to be an oiler when the outfit was in operation on July 16, 1919
The eight men in the partnership are C. W. E. Sponneman, Ferdinand Keller, Jr., William Hoefel, Henry Raubach, Oscar Horstman, Julius Wille, George Koenig and Gus Zulzind. The outfit was maintained mainly to thresh wheat on the eight farms but the company does work for others.
Whitson was asking $15,000 damages and said he would seek another trial (this was the second trial). He claimed he was supplied with an oil can with a short spout and too short to reach some of the parts about the machine.
At the time of the accident Whitson was preparing to oil near the blades and sustained a bad cut on the leg. Bloodpoisoning developed and necessitated the amputation of the leg.
The farmers claim Whitson had not been employed by them. The man in charge of the outfit said that Whitson had been told to go to the top of the outfit just before the accident. Evidence was also offered that other oil cans were on the machine for use where needed.4
In August 1928, Oscar rented his farm described as 1 mile west of Maryville and 4 miles north of Collinsville, near the Pleasant Ridge Church. On Saturday September 8, 1928 he held an auction to sell his personal property which included: Livestock: 3 mare mules, 8 Holstein milch cows, 3 fresh, balance to freshen this fall, 2 Holstein heifers, to freshen soon, 2 yearly Holstein heifers.
