A. J. Copeland, one of the pioneer residents of Maries county, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City, April 11th, 1928, of the infirmities of advanced age. "Jack" Copeland was the youngest of seventeen children of Solomon and Malinda Copeland, who emigrated to what is now Maries county (then Gasconade county) from Blount county, Tennessee, in 1832, and settled on what is now known as the Richter place, on the lower Mig Maries Creek, parts of this farm having been entered by him from the Government. The emigrants resided on this place until their death, and the subject of this sketch was born there on October 2nd, 1847, being at the time of his death 80 years, 6 months and 9 days of age. He was probably the oldest resident of this county to have been born here.
He was married November 3rd, 1870, to Miss Lottie Holman, herself of pioneer stock, being the daughter of J. A. and S. E. Holman, who moved here from Kentucky in a early day. After their marriage they lived for a number years at his father's home farm on the Maries, later removing to a farm on the Little Marries near the old Vienna and Jefferson City road crossing, and after a short time spent there, purchased the farm near Vienna to which he at once removed and where most of his active life was spent. He remained on the place until something like seventeen years ago, when he and his wife purchased the property in Vienna in which they spent their declining years until death called him.
Eleven children were born to this union, eight girls and three boys, of whom five had preceded him. The ones surviving, all of whom were present at his funeral, are: Mrs. J. S. Coffey, of Dixon; Mrs. J. L. Turner, Columbia; Mrs I. M. Rowden, Tuscumbia; Mrs. J. L. Eads, Dixon; Mrs. Coleman Finn,
Vienna and J. J. Copland, Lockport, Illinois. In addition to his children and widow, he is survived by twenty grand children, six great-grandchildren and a number of nephews and neices, also one brother, Martin Copeland, of Hickory county.
He united with the M. E. church, South, in Vienna, in the year 1921, during the ministry of Rev. B. F. Teague, and lived a consistent Christain (sic) life until hi death.
The funeral was conducted at the M. E. Church in Vienna Thursday, April 12th, by Rev. C. A. Baldwin, and was one of the largest in point of attendance ever held here, hardly more than half the people being able to gain admittance to the church. Interment was at the Protestant cemetery in Vienna.
He was a kind and helpful father and a good neighbor, and his place in the community will be hard to fill.
