Lewis Howell, son of Francis Howell and Susannah Stone, was born on 22 May 1800 in Bon Homme Bottom, St. Andrews, Louisiana Territory.1 Lewis Howell moved along with Francis Howell and Susannah Stone circa June 1800 from Bon Homme Bottom north side of the Missouri river in what was to become Dardenne Township.1
Lewis Howell opened the Howell Prairie Schoolhouse, the first permanent school in the area. circa September 1821 at Howell Prairie, St. Charles County, Missouri.1
Lewis Howell closed his school after becoming disallusioned with the role of schoolmaster in January 1822.1
In January 22, 1822 he traveled to the Texas territory to seek a Spanish land grant returning in late March. He almost immediately left to travel and teach in Louisiana. He eventually returned to Missouri and farmed for a time and tutored.1
Lewis Howell served circa 1825 in the St. Charles Militia as Adjutant, stationed at St. Charles, St. Charles County, Missouri.1 He opened the Lewis Howell Seminary, a one-room subscription school in 1830 at on his farm, Howell Prairie, St. Charles County, Missouri, the predecessor of the Francis Howell School District.
Lewis married Serena Lamme in June 1833 at Dardenne Presbyterian Church, St. Charles County, Missouri. they were the first couple married in the church.1 Lewis and Serena had six known children.1
