John J. Swillum's Business Activities Here Extend Over Period of 51 Years.
John J. Swillum, 79 years old, veteran business man of this city, died at his home here Friday, November 15, 1929, following a prolonged illness. Four years ago, shortly after his retirement from active business, he was stricken with acute heart disease and asthma followed by dropsy from which he never recovered. In the winter of 1928 his condition became so critical that little hope was held out for his recovery. He rallied from this, however, and was able to be about again. More recently there was another attack which brought about his death. California has been the scene of Mr. Swillum's business activities for fifty-one years with the exception of a brief period at Little Rock, Ark. Throughout his earlier life and period of middle-age, he was one of the city's most active business men. In 1887 he built a row of business buildings on Smith street between Oak and High streets and became the proprietor of two retail establishments, giving his special attention to dry goods, notions and general merchandise lines. In this he was assisted by his son, Elmer, and other clerks. During these years he was a booster for California and a most progressive citizen. A Moniteau county souvenir publication of 1893 speaks of him as "a successful merchant" and "a very active worker." On the night of April 8, 1910, a great misfortune from which e never fully recovered overtook Mr. Swillum when his residence and business buildings were swept away by fire. Since then his business interests have been smaller and varied, including some dealing in land prior to his final retirement. July 6, 1876, Mr. Swillum married Miss Anna Sophia Finke, daughter of H. C. Finke who was a prominent pioneer merchant of California. To this union five children were born, the following four of who survive: Elmer and Chas. Swellum and Mrs. Maud Gamm of Kansas City and Mrs. Mabelle Frank of Jefferson City. One child, Lilly Anna, died in infancy. The first wife died August 10, 1896. He afterward married Mrs. Emma Bryant who survives. Two children were born to this union. They are Mrs. Ruth Boyd of Ulysses, Kans., and Mrs. Lula Miller of Louisana, Mo. Other survivors are three brothers, Lee Swillum of California and Frank and Mike Swillum of Jefferson City; a sister, Mrs.. Kate Slicker of Jefferson City; a half-brother, Stephen H. Fischer of California; a step sister, Mrs. Mary Eckerle, of California; two step-children, Bert Bryant of this city and his sister, Ethel. The late Joseph Swillum of this city was a brother. Two other brothers died in the East years ago before the family moved to Missouri. Mrs. Thos. Callahan of this city who died recently was a sister as was the late Mrs. Ustina Hoffman of Little Rock. Ark. Mr. Swillum was born in Columbus, Ohio, September 16, 1850, and came west with his parents, Andrew and Josephine Swillum. His mother, after the death of his father in 1868, married Stephen H. Fischer, Sr., in 1869. A general regret is felt in the passing of Mr. Swillum and his bereaved family has the sympathy of the community. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. Fr. Lyons officiating. Gertrude Eckerle was in charge of the music; Frank Fischer and John Heinen were the ushers; Frank C. Eckerle, Louis Eckerle, Thos. Callahan, Thos. Gerhart, Edw. Maud Emma Swillum prepared this essay in 1895 at Missouri called: Thanksgiving Day
"The regular time for Thanksgiving is the last Thursday in November. This day has been celebrated by the American people ever since the year of 1863. It was originated by the Pilgrims, and afterwards appointed by the President of the United States. He made the law that all business should be closed in the forenoon.
Services are held at the churches in order to thank God for His Goodness. And with our Thanksgiving let us pray to the Lord to incline the hearts of our people Unto Him that He will continue to use His mercy and protecting care, guiding us in the path of national prosperity and happiness. And let us also on this day remember the poor and needy, and by deeds of charity let us show the sincerity of our gratitude.
After service follows the Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and all sorts of good things. The reason we have this day is because the Pilgrims when they had their harvests gathered, set this day aside as a day of feasting and thankfulness.
This being the rule of all the American people, they chose a turkey, since it was a native bird of America. It was the main dish of the Thanksgiving dinner. This is a nice dish for everybody, and anyone can prove it by the way it disappears on a certain Thursday in November.
And I am sure the turkey does not know he is so good and so many eat him on that day, or he does not seem to be very down hearted or does not act so, by the way he gobbles and struts about. Perhaps he is proud of being chosen above all other birds for this great feast."
Benjamin Franklin said it ought to have been the national emblem instead of the bald eagle, as the turkey could be trusted to fly at anybody wearing a red coat.
Although the turkey is not as handsome as he thinks he is, on Thanksgiving day he becomes charming to look upon, delightful to smell, and delicious to the taste.8

This church later came to be known as the United Church of Christ of California.11

At the opening of the opera house in 1885, Henry C. FInke was the owner and manager. When he retired in 1895, the ownership of the theatre was turned over to his son, William Finke. At the death of William Finke, his wife and daughter continued the operation of the Finke theatre until 1937, when it was sold to J. Nash and Henry J. Holloway.12
"In 1850 he moved his family to Moniteau County. He worked at his trade exclusively for one year, after which he put in a small stock of goods, and carried on the mercantile business on this plan for some time, which proved so successful that in 1857 he was enabled to build the first brick business house in California and stocked it with general merchandise. Mr. Finke served one term as county treasurer during the war. Upon taking the office there was but $8.46 in the treasury, and when he turned over the office there was $10,000. He also held the office of City Treasurer and was on the City Council for three years. After the war he bought up all the timber land he could obtain, and employed 150 men to cut off the timber and deliver to the railroad company. Previous to this, and during the war, the soldiers destroyed $20,000 worth of property, and took him out with the intention of hanging him, when the officers were prevailed upon to release him by the pleadings of his little daughter Tillie. In 1867 he built and ran the first paper mill in the State. It was called the Moreau Paper Mill. In this business he was not successful. Mr. Finke made and lost a great deal of money, and deserves credit for his perseverance. He now owns, in addition to his mercantile stock, a valuable farm of 600 acres, well stocked and running on an extensive scale, as well as real estate in adjoining counties, and also one of the handsomest residences in California, besides a number of rented and business houses, etc. Mr. Finke is one of the oldest and most public-spirited men of California, and may certainly be called a self-made and successful man. Although seventy-five years of age, he enjoys good health, but has given the entire management of his business to his son, W. C., who is a very intelligent, energetic and a very cautious young business man, and bids fair to be as successful as his father. Mr. and Mrs. Finke are worth and respected members of the Evangelical Church."7

His real-estate is valued at $8000.00 and his personal estate is valued at $8000.00. He was born in Hanover. Enumerated with him were: his wife, Sophia, his sons Henry and William Charles, his daughters Anna Sophia, Matilda and Emma R..10
In 1866, Henry was one of the founding fathers of the German Evangelical Church of California, Missouri. At his home in California, Missouri, several German speaking residents decided to erect a church building and elected a Board of Trustees. Henry was the President of this board. This church later came to be known as the United Church of Christ of California.11

Enumerated with him were: his wife, Sophia, his son William Charles, his daughter Anna Sophia, Matilda, Emma R. and Rosa E., his granddaughter Edna Baker.3
