St. Augustine Catholic Church (Napoleon OH)

#6727

St. Augustine Catholic Church (Napoleon OH) is located at 210 East Clinton Street in Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio.
The church was established on June 17, 1883. It is a brick ediface in the gothic style of architecture with a majestic tower, surmounted by a cross and rising to a height of seventy-five feet.1
Before 1856 the Catholics in Napoleon were served by visiting clergy from other cities. After a visit by Bishop Rappe in 1856 a mission was establish and a small frame building 24 by 30 feet was erected but due to a lack of funds not complete until 1858. From 1858 until 1864 the church was ministered to by priests from the church at Defiance, Ohio. In November 1864 Reverend P. J. Carroll became the first resident pastor who added a 24 by 25 foot extension to the church and a frame school-house. In 1870 Father Michael Pütz was assigned to the parish and served for over 35 years. In 1875 the property where the current church is located was purchased for $4,000.00 and in 1878 a new school was built on the property. In 1880 a committee which included Otto Honec, H. H. Vocke, F. Shoner, Michael Wirth and Frederick Fisher was established to oversee the construction of a new church. The corner-stone was laid June 19, 1881 and on June 17, 1883 the building was completed and dedicated.

St. Augustine Church History

From its humble beginnings as a mission church in the 1850’s, St. Augustine’s has grown and thrived, serving many sharing the Catholic faith in the Napoleon area. Early settlers included Irish and German immigrants who pulled together, establishing a Catholic parish in Henry County. Through generous contributions of Augustiin Pilliod and James Brennan, the first St. Augustine Catholic Church was built near 514 Hobson St. in 1856. Father J.P. Carroll had become St. Augustine’s first full-time resident priest by 1864 and he added the first school on the lot now occupied by Jackson Cleaners.

With the arrival of Father Dean Michael Putz in 1870, a tremendous period of physical and financial growth began for St. Augustine Church. A lot in the central part of town was purchased and plans were made for a new church and school. The new school came first in 1878 with the Sisters of Notre Dame arriving from Cleveland to serve the children of the parish. A new house for the sisters was constructed as well. A tremendous fund raising effort was needed to secure funds for construction of the new church. Much of the work was done by parishioners and other volunteers from the community. It was completed in 1882. The erection of the steeple was purposely delayed to make sure it rose above the statue on the county courthouse, also under construction at the time. St. Augustine Church was officially dedicated in June, 1883 and the parish had resolved all debt from the construction within two years. Father Putz served St. Augustine parish for an amazing 55 years until his death in 1925. His last concern was the construction of the new school, dedicated two months following his death.

Father Francis Schmuck succeeded Father Putz. He purchased the house behind the church for the current rectory and the Sisters moved into the house across the street formerly used by Father Putz. Their former convent had been razed to make way for the new school.

In 1946, Father Joseph Myers came to serve St. Augustine Catholic Church. Father Myers was a skilled carpenter and completed many renovating tasks in the church and school including turning over each hardwood board on the gym floor, refinishing and re-nailing them back in place.

Father Leo Mahlmeister led further renovations upon his arrival in 1955. Additional classrooms were added as well as kitchen facilities. After 12 years, Father Leo’s health began to fail and Reverend Joseph Mrowca serviced an interim of two years.

In 1969, Father Jerome Swiatecki arrived for an eight-year term of service. Father Jerry’s commanding voice, combined with a sensitive manner, allowed him to serve many in need.

With Father Paul Dorley’s coming to St. Augustine in 1977, a number of new ideas were introduced, including post-funeral meals, Jolly Timers and different religious education programs.

More recently, Father Fred Duschl served the parish for over 12 years and, under his guidance, St. Augustine Hall was built along with the connecting breezeway between the church and school. Father Fred was replaced by Father Bob Dendinger in 1994. His three-year tenure was marked by a personal, direct approach in his homilies. Reverend Patrick Scharf arrived from Toledo in the summer of 1997. Father Pat’s soft-spoken guidance led us into the next millennium with new vision for both St. Augustine Church and School. Father Pat launched the Parish's "Vision for the Future Together" campaign in fall of 2001 to secure funds for much-needed capital improvements. Father Pat's life ended prematurely earlier this year but the seeds he planted will carry the Parish family well into this new century. During Father Pat's illness, several Priests have served our Parish and to each we are grateful. Father Todd M. Dominique is currently serving as Pastor until our new Pastor is appointed. Father Todd's vision of Stewardship and energizing homilies are helping us to think toward the future... St. Augustine will be ready when our new Pastor arrives!1

St. John Nepomuk Czech Catholic Church (St. Louis, MO)

#6729

St. John Nepomuk Czech Catholic Church (St. Louis, MO) is located at 1625 South 11th Street in St. Louis, Missouri.
Oldest Bohemian Catholic church in America. St. John Nepomuk (or Nepomucene) Parish was named for Nepomuk, a town in Bohemia. While a few straggling Czechs were settled in St. Louis from 1848, the first large group came to the United States in 1854 via New Orleans. The first wooden church was begun on 11th Street (then Rosati) and Lafayette Avenue (then Soulard Street) by Right Reverend Francis de Sales Golleer of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish. with Reverend Henry Lipovsky as the first pastor. The first High Mass was sung on the feast of St. John Nepomuk, May 16, 1855 by Father DeSmet, S.J.
During the Civil War, there was no priest available and appeals were made to Bohemia and Father Joseph Hessoun arrived on September5, 1865. He was born in 1830 and was pastor until his death in 1906.
In 1870 Msgr.. Hessoun built a large brick church on the site of the wooden structure. It was built in gothic style with a steeple 170 feet tall. The was demolished by the tornado of May 27, 1896 and the present church was built an blessed on November 7, 1897.
After his death, the parish, in his honor, built an orphanage in Fenton, Missouri which lasted from 1908 until 1951. The present St. Paul's Church and school in Fenton are on the site.
Most of the statues are wood carvings from Bohemia, brought over in 1870 and not destroyed by the tornado.
The windows were installed in 1929 by the Frei Art Glass Company of St. Louis and made in Munich, Germany..
Located in the Soulard neighborhood, its vicinity was often referred to as "Bohemian Hill." Like many other downtown parishes its population began to decline in the 1920s and much of its territory was cleared for public housing projects. Before the opening of St. John Nepomuk the early Bohemians attended St. Mary of Victories.1,2

St. Peter Catholic Church (Kirkwood, MO)

#6731

St. Peter Catholic Church (Kirkwood, MO) is located at 243 West Argonne Drive in Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri.
Founded in 1832, an early center for Catholicism in rural St. Louis County, in the "Gravois Settlement," containing Germans, Irish and earlier pioneers. St. Peter is second only to St. Ferdinand in Florissant as the oldest Catholic parish in St. Louis county. It was founded in 1832, two decades before the town of Kirkwood itself.
St. Peter's Cemetery at Geyer and Monroe occupies part of the original church tract. The present building was begun in 1951 and dedicated two years later. It was the second of three churches of strikingly contemporary design commissioned by the St. Louis archdiocese from architect Joseph Denys Murphy. The earlier church was St. Ann in Normandy, and St. Peter was followed by Resurrection Church on Meramec Church in St. Louis. These churches reflect an unusual willingness on the part of the Catholic church to adopt modern design. All prominently feature stained glass created by Emil Frei Associates in programs of complex symbolism.

Here, at St. Peter's, each window represents a portion of the traditional ceremony of the mass, beginning with the Confiteor and the Introit to the right of the entry, and ending with the Lord's Prayer and the Ite, Missa Est to the left of the altar. Colors are graduated in intensity from pale gray to deep red. Only one window includes a full human figure, the consecration window directly behind the altar. The windows were designed by Francis Deck and were restored in 1991. The curve of the circular skylight above the altar is echoed in the rear wall and the convex chancel steps. The side chapel marks the site of the earlier church on this site. Joseph Murphy, born in 1907 in Kansas City, came to St. Louis to teach at Washington University. In partnership with Kenneth Wischmeyer, he produced the loggia at the Muny Opera in 1939. In 1948, he became dean of the Washington University School of Architecture, and in 1952 he joined Eugene Mackey, Jr., in a partnership that produced some of the familiar buildings of the era, including the Climatron, the Loretto-Hilton Theater, the auditorium of the St. Louis Art Museum, and Olin Library at Washington University.
