He was enumerated as the son of Jacob L. Hollocher on the 1920 U. S. Census for ward 25, St. Louis, Missouri. He was listed as a married 23-year-old male born in Missouri as were his parents.1 A newspaper article in Edwardsville Intelligencer Newspaper, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, dated 5 September 1924 reported "Charles Hollocher, shortstop with the Chicago Nationals, whose health has been failing, left for his home in St. Louis last night, according to word received from Cincinnati where the Cubs are playing. He is very weak and his health is thought to be such that remaining with the club might prove serious. Hollocher is contemplating a trip to the Southwest, in the hope of improving his condition."3 Charles J. Hollocher and Jane E. Gray were divorced between 1930 and 1940.
Charles J. Hollocher lived in April 1930 at Manchester Road near Grupp Road in Des Peres, St. Louis County, Missouri. Residing with them were.4

Charles is a head of household on the 1930 U. S. Census for Central Township, Des Peres, St. Louis County, Missouri. He was identified as a 33-year-old male born in Missouri as were his parents. He owned a radio and a home valued at $6,000.00. He was 23-years-old at the time of his first marriage. Enumerated with him were: his wife, Jane E..4

Charles died on 14 August 1940 in Frontenac, St. Louis County, Missouri, at age 43.6 His cause of death was a gunshot would to the neck. He walked out on his driveway and shot himself. A newspaper article in Helena Independent Newspaper, Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, dated 15 August 1940 reported "Death of former Cub player to be probed -- St. Louis, Aug. 14 -- Coroner John O'Connell announced an inquest would be held tomorrow in the death of Charles J. Hollocher, 43-year-old former star shortstop and captain of the Chicago Cubs, who was found shot to death near his suburban home her yesterday.

Charles J. Hollocher Tombstone.9
Had he not suffered from one of the most common - and misdiagnosed - maladies in American society, Charlie Hollocher might be remembered today as a Hall of Fame shortstop. As a 22-year old rookie, he batted .316 with 26 stolen bases to help the Cubs to the National League pennant. He led the league in total bases, hits, and at-bats, and he was the most difficult player to strike out. But his problems began in his second season, when he complained of stomach cramps, and slumped to .270 in 115 games. In 1920, he was batting .319 at mid-season, when he was sidelined with those stomach problems. He rebounded in 1921, playing most of the season healthy, and leading the league's shortstops in fielding, while batting .289 with 28 doubles and eight triples. In 1922, his .340 average was seventh in the loop, he ranked in the top ten in several offensive categories, and once again was the top fielding shortstop in the NL. Just 26 years old, he had more than 700 hits and a career batting mark over .300, and he was reknowned for his glove work. But, in 1923 Hollocher's nightmare began. The young ballplayer was suffering from depression, which had probably caused his stomach ailments earlier in his life, and for which he was never treated. He didn't play a game until May, but his amazing ability still overcame his disease, as he hit .342 in 66 games. Then, in August, Hollocher left the team, explaining that he couldn't concentrate on baseball anymore. In an era when mental problems were often concealed from the public, Hollocher's absence was explained away as "indifference" or "nervousness." He reported to spring training with the Cubs in 1924, and played 76 games, batting .240, but once again his depression sidelined him, and Hollocher went home. For several years, as late as 1930, Hollocher was rumored to be returning to the game, but he never played again. He continued to suffer from severe depression, and had difficulty keeping a job or staying in one place. On August 14, 1940, Hollocher went out into his driveway with a shotgun and shot himelf in the head. He had been complaining of stomach pains.

Charlie Hollocher (June 11, 1896 - August 14, 1940) was born Charles Jacob Hollocher in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a shortstop for the Chicago Cubs from 1918 to 1924.
He helped the Cubs win the National League Pennant in 1918. In that same season he led the National League in Games (131), At Bats (509), Hits (161), Total Bases (202), Singles (130) and Runs Created (76).
He led the National League in At Bats per Strikeout (118.4) in 1922. To this day it is still the Cubs' single season record.
He left the Cubs in August of 1923 due to depression. He tried a comeback in 1924, but was unable to complete the full season.
He killed himself in Frontenac, Missouri, on August 14, 1940, when he shot himself in the throat. He had suffered from depression most of his adult life.6
Major League Baseball Player. When healthy, he was very much a topflight shortstop who even took part in two triple plays and twice led the National League in fielding average; however, he was always snake bitten when it came to injuries, so much so that many people though he was a hypochondriac. Joining the crack Wabada Amateur Team under the tutelage of John B. Sheridan, he then moved on to Muscatine and Keokuk of the Central Association. He was then drafted by Portland of the Pacific Coast League who sent him to their affiliate at Rock Island of the Three-I League for seasoning. It was then that he was drafted out by the Chicago Cubs. A right-handed thrower and left-handed batter, he was a very good hitter who rarely struck out. As a rookie in 1918, he smacked out 161 hits to lead the National League, helping the Cubs reach the World Series where they lost to the Boston Red Sox. His .340 average in 1922 was the highest mark for a shortstop since Honus Wagner's batted .354 in 1908. Because of injuries, real and imagined, he never fulfilled his promise. The Cubs team Captain, he actually quit the team several times, one time seeking advice from a doctor over a stomach ailment that had been giving him problems for several years. After he retired from baseball, he took time off, spending it mostly golfing. He eventually opened up a Tavern in St. Louis, became an investigator for the St. Louis County attorney and worked as a watchman for a drive-in theater. He even returned to baseball in 1931 as a scout for the Cubs. On August 14th, 1940, he was found dead on the side of the road, lying near his car on a highway in Frontenac, Missouri. He had shot himself in the neck with a shotgun, which he had just purchased from a mail-order store. Left on the dashboard of the car was a suicide note that said, "Call Mrs. Ruth Hollocher." He was only 44 years old. Over the course of his major league career he accrued a lifetime batting average of .304 in 2936 career at bats with 14 home runs and 241 RBI. (bio by: Frank Russo).9
