Enumerated with him were: his wife, Nancy, his sons James, Edward and Joseph, his daughters Alice, Mary E., Elizabeth and Ann.6 Edward Lancaster was naturalized on 24 July 1854 at the Circuit Court in St. Louis, Missouri.7 He lived in 1871 at Cheltenham Neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri, The history of Cheltenham goes back to 1798. The area then was known to run from what we now call Kingshighway on the east and went as far as the City limits on the west end. At that time River de Peres was a clear crystal stream. It made a good area for settlements. In later years, immigrants were drawn to the area because they needed work. The factories sprung up with the mining of clay. The earliest and largest of the enterprises was the Laclede Fire Brick Company, which began in 1844., but expanded rapidly with the coming of the railroad. Irish, Italian,German, and Polish immigrants came to wok in the factories. In 1861 the Catholic Diocese established a mission which grew into St. James the Greater Parish. The Cheltenham public school opened in 1868. By World War II, most of the mines had shut down and the brick yards had closed. Subdivisions were built over the mines and pits. His will stated "Know all men by these presents that I, Edward Lancaster of Saint Louis County and State of Missouri Farmer being in good and sound and disposing mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made. And as to my worldly estate and all the property real and personal and mixed of which I shall die possessed, I devise, bequeath, and dispose thereof in the manner following, to wit:
First, It is my will that my funeral expenses and all my past debts be fully paid.
Second. After the payment of such funeral expenses and debts, I give, devise, and bequeath unto my beloved Children, to wit: my daughter Ann Stevens (2000) Two thousand dollars to be paid her as follows: one fourth in one year, one fourth in two years, one fourth in three years, and the balance in four years. Mary Bradley (2000) two thousand dollars. Alice Manhardt (2000) two thousand dollars. Elizabeth Carlin (1000) one thousand dollars. My sons, John Lancaster (2000) two thousand dollars, residing at present in Lancashire near Preston, England. James Lancaster (3000) three thousand dollars. My grandson Joseph Edward Nixon, son of Mary Bradley (1000) one thousand dollars to be paid him when he arrives at the age of Twenty five years, the (1000) one thousand dollars left to Joseph Edward Nixon to be put to interest and the interest to be paid him annually till he is twenty five year old.
Third I give, devise and bequeath unto the said Mary Bradley the Homestead on which we now reside, situated close to the Manchester Road near Cheltenham in the County of St. Louis and the state of Missouri and all the household furniture during her natural life providing she stays with me and takes care of me as long as I live; to the Sisters Orphan Asylum of the City of St. Louis (500) Five hundred dollars, to the Arch Bishop of Saint Louis (500) five hundred dollars for masses to be said annually for Edward Lancaster and Nancy Lancaster my wife. It is my wish that my Executors shall expend (1500) Fifteen hundred Dollars for improving my burial Lot, fixing Tombstones and Curbing, the same in Calvary Cemetry St. Louis and for removing the Bodies of Edward Lancaster and Joseph Lancaster who are now buried at Rock Spring Cemetery; In case of a surplus after paying all the legacies and expenses of this my last will and testament to be equally divided among and between John Lancaster, James Lancaster, Alice Manhardt, Mary Brandley, Elizabeth Carlin, Ann Stevens, and Joseph Edward Nixon (two words illegible) In case of a deficiency the same to be deducted from the within ZLegacies.
And lastly I do nominate and appoint my esteemed friends Thomas Wood, Thomas Silence and William Edmondson all of Saint Louis to be the Execuors and guardians of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I the said Edward Lancaster have to this my last will and testament contained on one sheet of paper subscibed my name and affixed my seal this first Day of June 1871.
