Captain Boone was on detached service and his company was prepared by Lieutenant Lea but he took command on the march and was noted as being especially valuable for his knowledge of woodcraft, and as guide-.7 Albert Miller Lea's description said "His captian was sent off, nominally to buy horses, but really to let him have the command to fit the company for the march. This done, Nathan Boone, the youngest son of Daniel Boone, a very worth citizen, easy-going and ignorant of discipline was given leave to go home, and the narrator was set to fit up that company also.8
Colonel Nathan Boone served from 16 February 1847 to 25 July 1850 in the U. S. Army as a major.5 He lived in 1848 at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas Territory.9 Olive and Colonel Nathan Boone lived in 1850 at Boone Township in Greene County, Missouri, he built a four-room home in 1837 and retired there in 1853. He anchored the wide plank florring with wood pegs and built the chimney of native stone.10,11
