     Stephen married Ann Eliza Nichols on January 11, 1850 at St. Louis County, Missouri.^4,1
     During July and August 1862 he was a prisoner of war in the Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis, Missouri. He was listed as captured in Jefferson County and released on August 19, 1862. His rank was shown as civilian which could be possible as the prison also housed spies, guerillas and civilians suspected of disloyalty.⁵
     After apparently taking an oath of allegiance to the Union, he was discharged from the Gratiot Street Prison per the orders of Provost Marshal Leighton on August 19, 1862.⁶ ; Gratiot Street Prison
     Stephen Hildebrand enrolled in the Second Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia with the rank of private in May, 1864.^7,8
     Stephen Hildebrand ordered into active service in the Union Army at Carondelet on September 27, 1864.⁷
     Stephen Hildebrand was relieved from active military duty on November 5, 1864. A note on the service stated sick furlough.⁷
Stephen died on November 21, 1898 in Missouri at age 68.^1,2 He was buried in November, 1898 in McCormick Cemetery in Murphy, Jefferson County, Missouri.¹⁹

The administrator, Edward Anderson and William Boren prepared the inventory.² The inventory of the estate included:

     The administrator of the estate, Rufus Lewis, petitioned at Probate Court, St. Louis County, Missouri, on March 18, 1875 for permission to sell real estate included in the estate of Martin C. Hildebrand. The property was described as:
lots or parcels of land being situate in the County of Jefferson and State of missouri to wit: The south part of lots number one and two of survey No 1331 beginning at the S.W. corner of survey No 1331 thence S 83 degrees E 58 chains and 20 links a post oak 20 inches in diameter bears N 3 degrees E 22 links distant and a white oak 20 inches S 1 degree E 44 links distant thence N 7 degrees 30' E 34 chains and five links an Elm 10 inches in diameter bears S 50 degrees W 13 links distant and a black walnut 20 inches N. 43 1/2 degrees E. 40 links distant thence S 52 1/2 degrees W 2 chains 10 1/2 links an Elm 14 inches in diameter bears S 37 1/2 degrees E. 38 links distant and a Sassafras 3 inches bears N 9 1/4 degree W 16 links distant thence N. 52 1.2 degrees W, 12 chains and 8 links a white oak 30 inches in diameter bears S 82 1/2 degrees W. 20 links distant S 42 degrees W 5 chains and 60 links past corner thence N 83 degrees W. 43 chains and 35 links to the west line of said survey from which a black oak 14 inches in diameter bears N 64 3/4 degrees E 31 links distant and a white oak 12 inches in diameter bears S. 46 1/2 degrees E 37 links distant. Thence S 7 degrees W 34 chains and 20 links to the place of beginning containing two hundred and one (201) acres.²
     A disbursement was made to a beneficiary of his estate, Elizabeth Ann Hildebrand on June 11, 1877. The disbursement consisted of the sum of $1,238.17. As Elizabeth was a minor, the disbursement was made to Rufus A. Lewis as curator for Elizabeth.²

     Abraham Hildebrand, son of Peter Hildebrand and Maria Garla, was born in 1782 in Cedar Hill, Jefferson County, Missouri.¹
