Mary Phelan, daughter of Henry Phelan and Ann (?), was born in 1961 in St. Louis County, Missouri.1
Mary Phelan attended high school at St. Joseph's Academy, St. Louis County, Missouri, graduating 1980.1
She worked as a news anchor at KMOV-TV and morning radio host at KEZK-FM.1
Mary married Dr. Allen Baudendistal in November, 1998 at Our Lady of The Piller Catholic Church, Creve Coeur, St. Louis County, Missouri.1
Mary died in December, 1998 at Interstate 270 in St. Louis County, Missouri, killed in an automobile accident three weeks after her wedding when the car driven by her husband slowed for a car developing mechanical problems and was hit from the read and pushed into a pickup.1 Her obituary was published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Newspaper on December 24, 1998.1 Her obituary stated:
Mary Phelan Baudendistel - Hundreds of friends and family members gathered at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church in Creve Coeur the Saturday after Thanksgiving to celebrate the beginning of Mary Phelan's life with Dr. Allen Baudendistel. On Wednesday, loved ones packed the church again, only this time they celebrated Mary Phelan Baudendistel's short but full life. Baudendistel, a former KMOV (Channel 4) anchor and morning radio host for KEZK-FM (102.5), died Sunday morning from head injuries suffered in an auto accident the night before. Three weeks ago, she linked arms with her father, Hank, and walked down the aisle in her wedding gown. She had met Allen Baudendistel, an anesthesiologist, last January. The night of the accident, Allen Baudendistel was driving in the far left lane on southbound Interstate 270, just north of Olive Boulevard. Traffic began slowing to halt as another car developed mechanical problems. A vehicle hit the Baudendistels' car from behind and pushed it into a pickup. Mary Phelan Baudendistel was the only person who suffered serious injuries. A graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in 1980, Baudendistel grew up in affluent West County with her sister, Suzanne Deutschmann and brother, John Phelan. Her father is a banker and was part of the family that owned the old Phelan-Faust Paint Co; her mother, Ann, was a seamstress who made a lot of her clothes. At the funeral, in a festively decorated church at 401 South Lindbergh Boulevard that smelled like incense and Christmas trees, Archbishop Justin Rigali and the Rev. James Tobin tried to soothe the mourners. 'Perhaps the burning question at a time like this is why,' Tobin said. 'Why did Mary die at age 37? Why after only three weeks of being married to a wonderful man? . . . We don't know why. That is the truth, albeit unsatisfactory . . . God asks us to draw upon our faith and trust him.' On Wednesday, the church organ played, just as it did at Baudendistel's wedding. KMOV reporter Jamie Allman read from St. Paul's first Epistle to the Corinthians, just as he did at the wedding. Friends and family took communion and sang 'Silent Night.'
