Hermann died on April 28, 1932 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Granite City, Madison County, Illinois, at age 75 of cancer.1,3 His obituary was published in the Edwardsville Intelligencer Newspaper on April 29, 1932.3 His obituary stated:
Funeral services for Herman Gerling, 75, who died yesterday in the St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Granite City, will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the residence on Buck road, followed by services at the Pleasant Ridge Lutheran Church, of which he was a member, at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Mr Gerling died after a two months illness of complications.
     He was born in Collinsville Township September 4, 1856, the son of Charles and Augusta Gerling. Mr. Gerling spent his entire lifetime in this vicinity and followed the occupation of farming. His marriage to Miss Caroline Buhrmaster occurred May 9, 1886. She precede him in death.
     Surviving are a brother, Henry Gerling, of near Maryville; one sister Mrs. Emma Schoenmetzler, of New Douglas. Three sisters and a brother preceded him in death

His funeral service was held on May 1, 1932 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Illinois.3 He was buried on May 1, 1932 in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Pleasant Ridge, Madison County, Illinois.1

Miss Minnie Diepholz, 83, died at the home of her nephew, Charles Bartels, 803 Ferguson avenue, Wood River, thursday afternoon about 1:30.
     She was born in Edwardsville township on September 11, 1962, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Diepholz. She attended school and was confirmed at Pleasant Ridge.
     The deceased is survived by one brother, Henry a. Diepholz; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Henry Diepholz, and one brother-in-law, Rudolph Ratzel, and 17 nieces and nephews, along with other relatives and friends. Two sisters preceded her in death.
     Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 from the Marks-Weber funeral home and at 2 o'clock from the Trinity Lutheran church. The Rev. E. W. Jahn Will officiate. Burial will be in St. James cemetery.
     Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 o'clock this evening.

Mrs. Lizzie Ratzel died Wednesday morning at St. Joseph's Hospital at 9:30 o'clock. She had ben ill for two weeks, suffering with a mastoid infection and other complications.
     Mrs. Ratzel was born in Edwardsville township on September 4, 1964, and was 76 years, 5 months and 15 days of age. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Diepholz.
     She was married to Rudolph Ratzel on november 15, 1896. Surviving are her husband, four children, Mrs. Angelo Cardina of Staunton, and William, Fred and emil Ratzel, all of Maryville. Nine grandchildren, a brother, Henry Diepholz of Edwardsville, and a sister, Mrs. Minnie Diepholz of Maryville also survive.
     The funeral services will be held from the Schroeppel Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Kuhlman will be in charge of the services
