African-Americans become major goal of year's program
Doug Schmitz has been pinching himself a lot lately. "I want to remind myself that I'm still here," he said.
One month ago, the 30-year-old construction worker underwent a heart transplant at University Hospital and Clinics after physicians told him his chance of survival beyond three years was remote. Schmitz had idiopathic cardiomyopathy, heart failure from unknown causes. For seven months, Schmitz was on a list of heart recipients. All he could do was wait.
The waiting period is the worst," said Patty Abele, University Hospital heart-transplant coordinator. "Patients tend to get very anxious and depressed. They're afraid they won't live long enough to get the heart. Schmitz could not work for most of that time and worried he might be a financial and emotional burden on his wife and two daughters.
"There were good and bad days," he said, "Sometimes I wanted to do something but my body would just say, "Not today you don't." I usually had to listen, But in the end, I know it's a struggle I'm going to win."
Schmitz said he wishes he could thank i person the family that donated the heart, but donors and recipients are not allowed to meet. So Schmitz is writing a letter of thanks instead. "I'll let them know that their gift has given me another chance at life," Schmitz said. "You have to remember they were looking at death and could still think of life for someone else.
Schmitz was fortunate. As of Feb. 5, nearly 2,300 people needed heart transplants for other organs such as livers and kidneys.6
Douglas died on July 7, 1992 at University Hospital and Clinics in Missouri at age 30.2,4
His funeral service was held on July 9, 1992 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Missouri.1 He was buried on July 9, 1992 in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson City, Cole County, Missouri, in Section 1, Lot 41, Grave 5.1,7
