The birth date of Francis Graves is based on the fact that he was shown to be an orphan in 1642; therefore, he was still a minor on this date. On 28 Nov 1642, a certificate was granted unto Francis Graves, orphan of Capt. Thomas Graves, deceased, for transportation of Richard Cainhoe, Capt. Tho. The exact date of death for Francis Graves is unknown; however, he was dead by 5 August 1691 because his widow, Jane, is mentioned in the following document:

To the Sheriff of Rappahannock County or his Deputy these Whereas divers complaints are made to this court that several runaway negro and mulatto slaves are in company together and have and still continue to do great mischief to the inhabitants of the southside of this county near or about the plantation of the widow Graves in the neck of land between Hoskins and Gilsons pocoson and in divers other places in this county we do therefore order and require you (in pursuance of the 16th act of Assembly held at James City April 16, 1691) that forthwith upon sight hereof (within your county) you will search and cause diligent search to be made after such negroes and other slaves offending as aforesaid and them to apprehend and safely convey to their respective masters as the law of this colony in that case directs.
