Dear Mr. Lawrence:
I'm sending a copy of the family record of Jeremiah children. The names are not very plane on the back of the family record I added the name of George Edwards. It was failed to get copied. George Edwards was married to Temperance Blanton, who was my great-great grandmother. Yes, Im not spring chicken. I am 84 years old---Sincerely Lucille W. Kennedy
P.S. The first 30 Chapters of Genesis was missing when I got the bible.
Excerpts from a letter
addressed to
Rev. Keith and Cathy Blanton of Bodfish, CA
from Mrs. Mae S. Blanton of Ellenboro, N.C.
Dear Keith and Cathy,
Thank you for the warm and interesting letter. It was good to hear from "family" members.
My husbands family also descended from Jeremiah Blanton. Jeremiah's son, Ransom, was their ancestor. I have shared your letter with Andy Blanton who is a descendant of Royley, another of Jeremiah's sons.
Oak Grove Church, the one Jeremiah started, is still gong strong. It is the oldest continuous operating church in the nine counties Western North Carolina Conference.
There is an interesting story about the starting of Oak Grove Church. It seems that the circuit riding Methodist preachers were always welcomed at Jeremiah and Nancys house. One these occasions the Blantons invited the neighbors in to hear the preachers.
One Spring day Jeremiah hauled up a lot of wood presumably to build a new barn. His neighbors came to help him but they advised Jerry (as he was called) that the location he had chosen was too far from the creek for the horses to drink and be cared for. Jeremiah did not say anything until it was finished then he announced it was to be the new "Meeting House" when the Circuit Rider came by. That was the beginning of Oak Grove Church. The Oak trees were small and he trimmed them with his pocket knife. A few of these oaks are still standing. The church was founded in 1792.
You are right about William and his wife (I am not sure it was Hannah) were the parents of Jeremiah. They migrated from Virginia to this area.
May God Bless you and keep you close.
Love,
Mae S. Blanton

In the year 2000, Cathy went on a pursuit of locating the Bible of Jeremiah Blanton. Over a course of several months, she finally acquired copies of the Family Record in February 2001. Thank you Keith and Cathy for sharing this information with the "family".
