He learned his trade from George E. Lambert, who operated a carriage shop in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. In 1893, Henry was operating a wheelwright shop out of the Lambert carriage shop, with Ned Ringgold (also in the Blacksmith Index) operating the blacksmith shop. Henry is listed as a blacksmith/wheelwright in the 1870 and 1873 Kent County Directories and the 1903 Maryland Directory. Henry never married and lived for many years with his unmarried sister Kate. His household at times also inlcuded a widowed aunt and a motherless cousin. In the Kent News of 28 April 1934: "Henry Deford, one of Chestertown's oldest citizens, has been quite ill at his home in Chestertown". Henry died in May 1935. He is my great grand uncle and his parents are my great great grandparents. His sister, Mary Elizabeth Deford, married my great grandfather, William Samuel Elburn. From census data, he appears to have been fostered out immediately (Frederick EDON "visitor" aged 3 in 1861). By 1871 he was apprenticed as a Wheelwright in Okehampton. By his own story he ran away from his apprenticeship to join the Army. I cannot find him in 1881. In 1885 he married in Wimborne, Dorset, but his wife Eliza Ann Cross died in pregnancy. By now he was using the HAYDON spelling. In 1888 he married my great-grandmother Kate Ann Plowman in Southampton - her father George Plowman was also a blacksmith. Frederick moved back to Wimborne for a year or two with Kate, and then they settled in Poole, Dorset. Frederick apparently died in 1912. Unfortuantely, no name or email address supplied. |

| | RINGGOLD | William Edward (Ned) | Blacksmith | 1862: William Edward "Ned" Ringgold was born 29th March 1862 on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, md. In the 1880 census, he is listed as an apprentice wheelwright with Henry P. Jones on Kent Island. In 1893, Ned and his wife, Susanna "Annie" Arters, moved to Chestertown, Kent County, Maryland. Ned worked with Henry S. Deford at the G.E. Lambert Carriage Building on Cannon Street in Chestertown. Ned eventually owned and operated his own blacksmith/wheelwright shop on Court Street in Chestertown. A newspaper clipping from 26 February 1938 Entitled "57 years spent as a blacksmith" notes that Ned predicted he had shod 114,000 horses. He announced his retirement and said that Marion Parsons would take over his blacksmithing duties. Ned died 4th December 1938 and another newspaper clipping entitled "late W. E. Ringgold's Will devides (sic) estate" lists his two daughters as Heiresses; my grand aunt, Ethel Baum Ringgold Miller and my grandmother, Molly Rebecca Ringgold Elburn. In 1861 he married (1) Julia Long (she was the governess at Gingin, Western Australia). Under the name of Tyler he worked as a blacksmith. At some point Julia ran off with someone else, we don’t know what happened to her? James later married (2) Annie Louise Toovey in 1882 at Albany WA; they used the name Tylor and still do to this day (even though the correct spelling is Taylor). In 1880 (approx) James worked as a wheelwright in both Albany & Tenderden WA. Betwween 1883 & 1892 James & Annie owned a Smithy shop at Eticup (note: Eticup no longer exists; was near to Broomhill WA). After 1892 they moved to Katanning WA where James died in 1911. Annie, the district Midwife, died 1937, Katanning. Notes from a teachers report of Julia Long, shows James was a convict and he is believed to have been in WA since 1842. Born in 1880 in Queensland, Australia. Died in 1964 in New Zealand. He came to New Zealand with his family after his mother died in1885? When first in NZ he worked for Turnbulls as a wheelwright at Waikiwi and Invercargill. In 1901 John went of to the Boer War along with another man named Watts (who later, in 1905, married John’s sister Ruth Voight). In 1907 John had a blacksmith business in Waipahi which he kept until 1913; then the family moved to Pleasant Point, near Timaru. His main business here was on the main street near the town hall. The only other Smithy in the area was in Totara Valley and this was managed by a Mr. Anderws. In 1919 John bought a farm of 400 acres not far from Albury. He sold the farm in the 1950s and retired to Geraldine. He was one of those men who was already ready to help others out; he was also a great Church man. In WW1 he was the local recruiting officer. | | WINTON | James | Wheelwright & Carpenter | 1793: James Winton, carpenter and wheelwright. Born in Kent, some time between 1793 and 1801, in the neighbourhood of Tonbridge or Tunbridge Wells. Three charges were brought against James at the Lent Assizes at Maidstone in Kent on 17 March 1817. The jury decided that James was guilty and he was sentenced to be "hanged by the neck until he is dead". He was reprieved and sentenced to transportation for fourteen years. Arriving in NSW as a convict aboard the ship "Larkins" , James went on to live a useful and productive life in Wilberforce NSW as a carpenter and wheelwright.
