According to the 1871 Census he is described as a Blacksmith and living at Llanfrechva Upper (Panteg). He worked in St Clair twp near Pittsburgh for a few years and then for Brown & Bunnell in Youngstown Ohio for the rest of his career. Family stories tell of the music and dancing between pours, William's son (my great grand father) becoming a professional musician after they left the mill.
