ALLEN John Bowyer Blacksmith 1839: John Bowyer Allen, blacksmith. Born about 1839 probably in Monmouthshire. Wales. Son of farmer James Allen & Rachel nee Jenkins. John aged 23yrs married at Mamhilad Church on the 25 December 1862. The 1871 census for Wales lists John as a blacksmith, living at Llanfrechva Upper (Panteg). He left his family about 1880 and is reputed to have gone to Italy to work for the King as a locksmith, nothing further was heard from him. Contact Mary by

DAVIS William.R. Blacksmith 1816: William. R. Davis, blacksmith. Born 1816 in Wales. Immigrated to the USA before 1851 when he married Margaret Longridge in Wheeling Virginia. William worked in St Clair twp near Pittsburgh for a few years and then for Brown & Bunnell in Youngstown Ohio for the rest of his career. Family stories tell of the music and dancing between pours, William's son (my great grand father) becoming a professional musician after they left the mill. As automation rose he made plans with his sons (puddlers both) to become a merchant and in the last years before his death in 1899 he kept a shop. Listed in Blacksmiths of USA and Wales. EDGAR Thomas Blacksmith 1900: Thomas Edgar, blacksmith. Born when? In the Penperlleni region of Monmouthshire, Wales . Thomas operated with his father as Blacksmiths, first in Llantillio Pertholley, then at Llanellen, then Llanfair and finally at Goytre, working for Jacksons. A bachelor and great character loved by all. He was my surrogate Grandfather. I lived with him for 6 years. He died in 1962 and is buried at Goiter church next to the wall on the bend in the road. He describes himself in the 1841 census as a " Vetrinary Surgeon " (Like others in the index )When Evan died aged 75 in March 1867 the notice in The Cardiff and Merthyr Guardian newspaper read "leaving a large circle of relations and friends to deplore their loss ". He is recorded in Pigot's Directories 1830 and 1844, Hunts 1849 and Slaters 1852 as a blacksmith and nail maker in Kidwelly. The census of 1871 shows him as a blacksmith living in Monksford Street. In 1861 he is at 1 Plucca Lane, William now a publican, Lewis now a Smith. He married in 1861 and declared his occupation as a Smith. William is listed as a blacksmith, journeyman on my grandmothers birth certificate. Address at the time was Croake Place Tudor Road, Cantor, Cardiff, Wales. In 1891,Mary Moses is 30yrs old and widowed unless Iím reading it wrongly. So she must have been pregnant when William died or William is off somewhere else working. She is visiting Emmeline Mazdon 53yrs,widowed and her sons Tom Martin K. Mazdon 18yrs and William John.K .Mazdon 11yrs. She must have named her daughter Emmeline after this woman (might be a sister ???) . THOMAS James Blacksmith 1894: James Thomas, blacksmith. Born ?when in Merthyr , Wales. James started out as a blacksmith in Glamorganshire, Wales. He and his family immigrated to the USA, first to Youngstown Ohio and then Chicago, Illinois where he died in 1894. WALTERS James Blacksmith,Farrier 1879: James Walters, blacksmith, farrier. Born 1879 in Llanllawddog, Wales. He was apprenticed to his father Walter Walters in Llannon, Carmarthenshire. At the age of 20 James moved to London. He entered The Royal show Derby 1906 when he became 2nd out of 73 competitors. The following year he was champion in Oxfordshire. This carried the Freedom of London.In 1921 and 1922 he became champion of Wales. The only man to do this twice in succession at this time. His son Sidney (my father was also a farrier. Thomas can be found in census from 1851 to 1881. His death occurred between 1881 and 1891.
