In 1778 he was apprenticed to a Shipwright at Chatham Dockyard and served a seven-year apprenticeship at Chatham, Sheerness and Woolwich. Once qualified, he married and settled at Deptford with his wife Isabella: their ten children were all baptized at Deptford. In 1805 Richard was promoted to "Foreman Afloat" and in 1822 to "Foreman of the Yard"(i.e. Deptford Dockyard). Isabella died in 1826. He worked as a Shipwright and had seven (7) children: James (22 Mar 1818); Ann Charlotte (6 Apr 1821); Mary Ann (6 Apr 1821); Sabina Amelia (20 May 1825); James Thomas (12 Jun 1828); Samuel William (27 Jan 1833); and Catherine Sarah ( 1835). James trained his sons in the skill of building and Samuel William went on to own a large building company in England with many employees and household servants. He was born and lived in the Gravesend - Milton area all his life. He married Mary Ann Butler (born 1806 Northfleet) in 1823 in Stone by Dartford, Kent. They had at least 10 children including several boys called Isaac Richard although only one survived infancy. Isaac Richard's place of death was at the Clarence Tap in Milton in 1856. Charles Cooper was one of a family of shipwrights building at Berkeley in 1841. he took over the main yard at Pill in 1862. The yard lay at the head of the creek at Pill and was the only one to have it's own saw pit. He had two sons in the business, John and James . He left the yard to his brother George Cooper who at the time was living in Penarth near Cardiff, George passed the yard over to his younger brother John who worked the yard until 1905 when it closed down. 29 registered Cooper vessels are listed in the booklet "Shipbuilding in the Port of Bristol" published by the National Maritime Museum. He had a son Thomas Rich Gregory in about 1830 and when this son was born, William gave his address as Gasking Street, Charles the Martyr (Stonehouse?). The child's mother was Lucy Cumming. He also gave his occupation as a Shipwright. His son went on to be a carpenter too in Charles. I haven't been able to find William in any census but did find a Watchman born in Plymouth on a vessell in Liverpool in 1881 age 72, who could be him!

About 1841 Deptford Dockyard was closed for a year or so for refurbishment and James and Harriet spent this period at Sheerness. By May 1844 they were back in Deptford, where they spent the rest of their lives. James, by then an Inspector of Shipwrights, retired in 1859 and died in 1879. Harriet died 1887. Contact Judy by. |
