BALL William Iron Worker, Puddler 1795: William Ball, iron worker and puddler. Born Horsehay, Great Dawley Shropshire, England. Died: 1852. He had the nickname of "The Shropshire Giant" because of his size. He was also well known under the pseudonym "John Bull". From the age of 8 he was employed for forty years at the Coalbrookdale Company's Horsehay Ironworks. He ceased working when a piece of molten iron blinded him in one eye. He married twice his first wife Mary Bailed in 1819 and had two children Eliza (born 1823) and Thomas (born 1824), sadly both daughter and wife died in 1824 and son Thomas aged 15yrs. CARD Frank Henry Iron Founder 1867: Frank Henry Card, Iron Founder. Born in 1867 at Leytonstone, Essex, the son of William Card (1836 - see Blacksmith of Essex index). In 1891 at Chelmsford, Essex, Frank married Annie Harris, the granddaughter of Joseph Harris (1806) an Iron Founder (see Iron Worker Index). Frank served an apprenticeship with Christy Brothers of Broomfield Road, Chelmsford, a firm owned by Quakers, Frank’s apprentice indentures forbade alcohol, smoking, gambling, frequenting houses of ill repute and consorting with loose women. Sometime after completing his apprenticeship Frank left Christy Bros and worked in the Woolwich Arsenal. In the 1901 Census Frank and Annie were living in Artillery Road, Colchester and Frank was working at Crittall’s in Colchester. By 1903 Frank was back working with Christy Bros where he invented or perfected some sort of Moulding Rod for which he was given a generous bonus, enabling Frank and Annie to buy the family home in South Primrose Hill, Chelmsford. Frank and Annie raised six children at Chelmsford between 1893 and 1908, another child was born at Colchester in 1900, Frank and Annie are my maternal grandparents. Contact Derek by.

In 1770 a marriage settlement for his wife Martha Wilson, daughter of Joseph Wilson, brewer of Bristol, was executed. The 1775 Bristol Directory, published by Temple Local History Society has them Living at 146, Reecliffe Street, Bristol. John Hall's son Thomas Wilson Hall was a customs officer in Bristol (probate dated 1844) and he can be found on 1841 census. Iron Manufactory"[Berrows Worcester Journal 1771]. Lambeth – Marsh & Wall Rates 1773-1788 – recorded as Ironmonger, Surrey foot of Westminster Bridge. In 1773 the rent was £40 p.a. and the quarterly assessment 10/- plus £10.2.6 for the workshop. In 1788 the rent was £48 p.a. and the assessment £1.16.0 per quarter. Timothy died in 1792 and is buried at St Mary, Lambeth. His widow Sarah, briefly operated the business until her death in 1794. His daughter Valerie say "my knowledge is a bit vague im afraid but it must have been about the late 1920s. At the time Reginald lived at Devon Great Consols Lamerton. We however shifted to quite a few moorland villages as the work dried up. When the horse was supplanted by the tractor he went to work at Devonport dockyard and was sent to Gibraltar just after WW2. About 1834, Thomas Welch married Mary Maria Linley (born1813 in Blythe, Nottingham). Mary Maria was daughter of Thomas Linley and Mary Briggs. (Thomas Linley possibly the Bellowsmaker of Sheffield or the father of the Bellowsmaker of Sheffield). Thomas and Mary Maria Welch immigrated to Canada 1839 – 1843. Thomas died in 1885 in Clarke Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada. Appears to be the first in his family in this trade. His Father (also Isaac ) was a Master engineer. In 1844 he is named on the birth certificate as the father (David Scotland) to a child (born in Whitby, North Yorkshire) of Hannah Bryan - his occupation is blacksmith. in 1846 he married Hannah Bryan in Whitby, North Yorkshire. His marriage certificate shows him as David Wilson Scotland, bachelor aged 27yrs, an Iron Moulder, living at Baxtergate, Whitby,Nth.Yorkshire. On the 1851 census he is listed as David Wilson aged 30,an Iron Moulder, in Lower Bent, Oldham (ref A0180) with wife Hannah 26yrs. Children: Mary 2yrs & Elizabeth 1 month infant. Elizabeth's birth certificate for 20/01/1851 also gives David's surname as Wilson and his occupation as Iron moulder. Elizabeth was born in Wigan.
