Possibly a Lost
Church and Cemetery
Between Palestine and Esom
Nina Bischoff wrote, "....there was a church between Palestine and
Esom that my aunt used to attend school there as a child.
This was in
woods across from the lake of the ROY WILLIAMS Farm...."
This Cemetery and Church may have been called Cherry Grove. It
is
believed Roy Williams now owns this property and his or the current
owner's permission should be obtained before any research is done.
Mildred Perry wrote in a 1999 article, "....At Palestine were the Cherry Grove Church and Cemetery, nearly on the Georgia line....One of the most influential and important institutions at Palestine was the Cherry Grove Church and School. I have learned from reading The Cleburne County Heritage Book, that Mr. Thomas Treadaway gave an acre of land for the founding of this church and it was quite a history, along with having been used as a school. I also learned that Palestine is not called that now but is known as part of Borden Springs. Teachers at the school were Mr. Charles STEPHENS, Flora MERCER, Ruth GARNER, Idela GOLIGHTLY, and Mr. POE...." a picture of the Cherry Grove School student body and teachers of 1917 (which I don't have a copy of) includes the following families:
Ackin, Dowdy, Dyer, Edmondson, Putnam,
Sadler, Wheeler, William, Womack,
Mercer, Moore, Henderson,
Holland, Houston, Howell
