My great-grandfather, Jan Szafranski, was a funeral director for many years on the South Side. The Szafranski funeral home was located at 141 S. 15th Street, just a little ways up the street from the current location of John J. Gmiter's. While poking around in my grandmother's attic about 2 or 3 years ago, I came across two books of death certificates of folks that were buried by Mr. Szafranski. My wife has been working on scanning these documents in and transcribing the important parts of them. I have put the transcriptions that she has done to date on this web site, so the information is generally available.
