NOTE: on the 1860 Bull Swamp census mentioned below you will see Julia Smithart above Young A. Pool’s household. Julia was Julia Horsey, wife of Daniel Smithhardt, and the sister of Young A. Pool’s wife Lucy Anne, Lucinda Horsey, daughters of John and Mary Horsey. John and Mary’s sons were John W. Horsey and Euramus Horsey. Euramus married Julia Wise, sister of Mary Margaret Wise wife of Hamilton Spires, grandparents of Locky Spires, grandaughter of Julia Horsey Smithhardt. Locky Spires married Thomas Blizzard, grandparents of Tillman A. Blizzard.

Tania descends from Walter Pool of Ohio, son of Young A. Pool, the brother of Walter Pool, grandfather of Tilman Pool II, Grandfather of Tillman A. Blizzard. Pat Bonneau descends from Walter Pool through his grandson Russell Pool and wife Henrietta Whetstone. Henrietta's sister Georgiana married Henry Pool, son of Tilmon Pool I and Tirzia Gunter, great-grandparents of Tillman A. Blizzard. Gunters are of royal descent from Emperor Charlemagne. I did not say this would be easy or simple---By Barbara Blizzard.

Subject: Walter Poole Siblings and Children

Hi Pat and Barbara,

It was good to hear from you, it's been awhile.

I know  my Walter Poole,  born 1835 in South Carolina, was the eldest child of Young A Pool and Lucinda Horsey.  There were eleven children, nine boys and two girls  This information was found in his biography that was published 1880 in the "History of Belmont and Jefferson Counties in Ohio.

One daughter was named Sarah.  She was listed in the SC 1860 census at Orangeburg, Orangeburg with Bull Swamp listed as Post Office. The census listed her as 13 with a (possible birthdate of 1847).   The other daughter is probably Keziah Cooper age 25(possible birth date of 1845) with her son William H Cooper age 8, listed in 1870 census in GA  living with her parents and brothers.  The 1860 and 1870 censuses are off when it comes to birthdates but, I believe they are the same family.

The sons are  Basil b. 1847, Allen b 1849, Morgan b 1851, Jackson b 1853, and Marcellas b 1858.  A brother John is surviving according to my Walter's obituary in 1912.  My Walter, John,  Basil,  and two other sons are not in the 1860  SC census with the other family members.  I believe my Walter is in the 1860 Lexington County census with a wife Martha, a daughter Tabitha, and a son Tillman.  I have no idea where John,  Basil,  and the other two boys are in 1860.  I expect John and the other two boys have birthdates between 1836 and 1846, Basils is 23 in 1870 census living with his parents.  Perhaps John and the other two boys  are living with other family members working on their farms in SC or Georgia.  Perhaps the two missing boys lost their life in the civil war.  I just don't know.

I believe Alvin/Alwin/Alban/Alford can be accounted for in the GA 1900, 1910,and 1920 census.  I believe Howard is living next to Alvin in the 1910 GA Census.  Alvin is enumerated as 29 29 and Howard is 30 30.

I do not know when Alvin and Howard died.  I believe Alvin died in the 1920s because his wife is listed as a widow  in 1930 census.  My nephew found a Howard Poole in the Alabama death index with a 7 Nov 1944 as a death date.  I don't  know if  this is my Howard.  My nephew checked the Alabama death index because  my Aunt Mae Shue's obituary of 1937  listed Howard as living in Alabama.

The above are my thoughts at this point in time.

Until next time,

Tania

Hi, Tania and Barbara:

In 1860, Y. A. Pool, 45, is living in Orangeburg, Bull Swamp Postal Address.  He is married to Lucy Ann (Lucinda?), 45.  Living with them is Sarah J., 13; Allen, 11; Morgan, 9; Jackson, 7; Mercelous, 5, Male.  Directly below them is the home of Edmond Nobles.  Directly above them the home of Sarah Williamson (Williamson & Pooles intermarry in my branch of the family, descended from Isaac Pool).  NOTE: These are the names of the 1870 Pulaski GA Pooles. (Source: 1860 Orangeburg District Federal Census, unnamed township.  Ancestry.com Image # 186 of 212)

---Basil Poole---

Possible 1910 census for Basil, who was born abt 1847 in SC:

------------

---Allen Pool---

A broken tombstone was found in the Brown Family Cemetery in Chauncey, Georgia, which appears to be for Allen Pool. It is located next to a tombstone, still standing, for Young Pool, his father. For photo, see Allen's electronic scrapbook, this genealogy. Additional research needed.

Believe Allen may have died in Civil War; however, didn't make any note to explain why this is speculated.

---

---Morgan Pool---

Morgan's exact date of death is unclear. Census records record birthdates that range from 1859 to 1852. A possible 1923 death certificate was located for a Morgan Pool in Crisp County, Georgia. It gives his age at death as 64, but also says his DOB is unknown. This same document confirms his marriage to Betsy Pool.

Morgan Pool's marriage to Betsy Blankenship is verified by the death certificate of Walter Poole, their son, who was born in Dodge County, GA (where Young Pool's family lived). Walter's death certificate incorrectly says that Morgan, his father, was born in North Carolina (should be South Carolina). Betsy was born in Laurens County, Georgia. The first census for the couple (1880) was recorded in Laurens County, GA.

Morgan's place of birth is consistently recorded incorrectly as Georgia on census reports. However, it is believe that the records below are for the correct Morgan Pool, s/o Young A. and Lucinda Pool of SC. Several of Morgan's children correctly give their father's place of birth as South Carolina: 1) Omie Poole Forest Parker, 1910 census; 2) Thomas Poole, 1920 census. Research continues.

Census Reports

In 1860, Y. A. Pool, 45, is living in Orangeburg, Bull Swamp Postal Address.  He is married to Lucy Ann (Lucinda?), 45. His son, Morgan, is listed in Young's household.

...Morgan is 9, born SC, white male (Est. DOB 1859)

Siblings are: Sarah J., 13; Allen, 11;  Jackson, 7; Mercelous, 5, Male. (Source: 1860 Orangeburg District Federal Census, unnamed township.  Ancestry.com Image # 186 of 212) .

Young A. Poole's family is enumerated twice in the 1870 census, which indicates they moved within the census year. The first census, June 30th, was in Telfair County; The second, Aug 18, was in Pulaski County.

By 1880, Morgan has moved to Laurens County, Georgia and married Betsy Blankenship, who was born in Laurens County, Georgia. Notice that Morgan's place of birth is given as Georgia rather than SC. This continues to be an ongoing problem with census records for this family.

Death Records

On what is believed to be Morgan's 1923 death certificate, place of birth was given as SC, ditto both his parents; however, the parents' names were recorded as unknown. The death certificate records his spouse as Betsy Pool. Based on these facts, it appears the death certificate is for the correct Morgan Pool. However, a second source to confirm the parentage of the "Crisp and Laurens Counties" Morgan Pool would be welcome.

Note: There is an Alvin B. Poole, one household below Jackson's home. He is 28, b June 1871. Married 3 years, born in Ohio, both parents born in SC. His wife is Sybil, b July 1876, 23 years old, born GA, both parents born SC. William H., son, b Apr 1898, 2 yrs old, born in GA (both parents are shown as born in GA). It is believed that Alvin's father, Walter Pool of Ohio, was Jackson Pool's brother. UPDATE: 7/26/08 email from TNG428@aol.com: "My Walter's (Ohio Walter) had a son, Alban/Alwin/Alvin, who, according to family tradition, relocated to Alabama." This is most likely the Alvin B. Poole of the 1900 Chauncey, Dodge County Census.

In a subsequent email, Tania notes that in the 1910 census for "Ohio" Walter Poole, he says his father was from GA, not SC. She believes this is a slip-of-the-tongue because Walter now knew his father had moved from SC to GA. How did he know? Because his son, Alvin, had moved to GA and lived near Jackson Pool, son of Young Pool. Tanis also notes that Walter knew the date of death of his father, as record by the write up on Walter in the Jefferson County, Ohio, book.

This is the last census found for either Jackson/Jack Pool or his wife, Mary. Family may have relocated to Alabama as other family members reported to have died there. Additional research needed.

Actions/Questions/Speculations:

- William D. Poole, born May of 1853 - 1900 Chauncey, Dodge County, Georgia census

He is living six households away from Alvin Pool of Ohio, grandson of Young A. Pool, and 8 households away from Jackson A. Pool, son of Y. A. Pool. This William is currently unknown. Children: Alice E., John C., Nancy A., Christine E., Wiliam T., Emma L., Stephen J., Eula M., and Vicia, mother , born May 1824 in GA.  Might he be a relative of Jackson A. Pool, b 1855.

- Tillman Poole, d 26 Feb 1996, 85 yrs old (b abt 1911), Death: Richmond County; Lived: Atkinson County; Certificate: 013933; filed 4 Apr 1996 (Source: Georgia Deaths, Ancestry.com)

------Marcellous Sill Pool ----

The original source for the marriage between Marcellas and Sabra was the 1910 census for Dodge County, Georgia, Chauncey Township. "Sill" Poole is living 3 households away from the family of Jackson (Jack) A. Poole. Jackson was the brother of Marcellaus, b bet 1855-1860 (age in 1910 55- 50). Age on 1910 census for Sill Poole looks to be either 50 or 52. Consider marriage to be proved by 1880 census (Marcellas Pool is living in household of Sendy Harrell with Sabra Pool, daughter to head) and 1930 (Sill Pool is head of household, born GA, father and mother born SC, wife, Sabra). Note: Additional research indicates Sabra's maiden name was Harrelson. Research to confirm maiden name continues.

According to census reports, the couple had nine children. Only five are currently known. In addition to Sabra and Sill, three tombstones are in Sill Pool's family plot at Zion Hope Baptist Church: 1) Lucindy Harrelson, 2) Henry Poole and 3) Vina L Poole (these last two were the children of W. S. & Sabra Pool). There were also two markers for infants, neither gave a name, date of birth or death, or names of parents. Might W. S. refer to Marcellus...could his name have been Walter Marcellus (Sill)? Speculation at this point with no basis in proof. Additional research needed.

Census Reports

In 1860, Y. A. Pool, 45, is living in Orangeburg, Bull Swamp Postal Address.  He is married to Lucy Ann (Lucinda?), 45.  Living with them is Sarah J., 13; Allen, 11; Morgan, 9; Jackson, 7;

.....Mercelous, 5, Male.

Directly below them is the home of Edmond Nobles.  Directly above them the home of Sarah Williamson (Williamson & Pooles intermarry in my branch of the family). Y. A. Poole's ancestors are unknown. NOTE: These are the names of the 1870 Pulaski GA Pooles. (Source: 1860 Orangeburg District Federal Census, unnamed township.  Ancestry.com Image # 186 of 212) . Researcher speculates that the John Pool married to Sally Nobles may be the son of Young and Lucinda Poole. Other than proximity of the family to the Nobles family, no basis in fact. Note that John and Sally Pool will move to Telefair, GA, by 1870 and leave near Young Pool and his family.

There are two census reports for Young A. Poole's family in 1870, dated a few months apart. In the first, Marcilla is a female. The next has him correctly identified as male. See Young A. Poole's notes for first 1870 census.

Death Records

Possible burial record: Zion Hope Baptist Church Cemetery

- Poole, Adult - DOB & DOD illegible - Buried beside Sabra Poole

(Source: Photocopy of page from "Dodge County Georgia Cemeteries" provided by S. Brown, 2/09)

UPDATE: Confirmed to be the tombstone of Sill Poole by 3/09 trip to Zion Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, March 5, 2009; see electronic scrapbook, this genealogy.

Note: Lucindy Harrelson is buried beside Sill's wife, Sabra. Was she a relative of Sabra Harrell/Harrelson Poole or was she a daughter of Sill and Sabra, who married a Harrelson? There are no dates on the tombstone to aid in identification, just her name. Lucinda was Sill's mother's name.

Between Sabra and Sill are the graves of Vina L., daughter of W. S. & Sabra Pool, and Henry, son of W. S. & Sabra Poole. This raises questions about Sill's name; might it have been Walter Sill (Marcellas)? We know Sabra was married to a Marcellas Pool from her 1880 census; in later censuses, her husband is identified as Sill. The "W" was not used in any other known documents.

Little is know of daughters Kezziah and Sarah, other than:

Kezziah married an unknown Cooper and had one child, William H. Cooper

Death Records

According to Tania Gastaga, who is a great niece of Howard, family tradition said Howard died in Alabama. Tania found a 1944 death certificate for him there. Requested details 1/17/09.

There is also a burial record in Georgia for a Howard W. Poole; however, believe this is the wrong person. Additional research needed.
