Angela M. Determann was born in Lengerich, Hanover, Germany and married Herman Bernard Determann on November 14, 1837 at Lengerich. His name was the same as that of one of her brothers. He was probably a cousin. They went to Haverhill, Marshall County, Iowa, where both died and are buried. One researcher refers to her as "Anna Maria". She is mentioned several times in the Haverhill Centennial 1882-1982 in different family accounts, always as Angela M. I am, therefore, inclined to accept it as correct. The names are enough alike that they may have become confused down through the years. It would be easy for it to appear incorrectly in a record. This Herman Bernard Determann was born at Lengerich on November 6, 1807. In one family account it is said Angela was the driving force in getting the family to move to Iowa. On March 23, 1872, just three days after moving onto the farm at Haverhill that their son, John Bernard Determan, has purchased, he and his father went to Newton, Iowa to obtain a load of coal for fuel. On their return in the evening they found Angela dead. Thus she never enjoyed the benefits of the move. The family account does not state whether Herman Bernard Determan ever remarried. If he did, it is possible that his second wife was Anna Maria. Their son, John Bernard Determan, lived in Wisconsin prior to the move to Iowa. He worked first as a farm hand, and then acquired his own farm. While he was there he helped his parents and his sister, Caroline Determan, to come to America to be with him. In 1873 John Bernard Determan married Mary Spiker and they had seven children. Caroline married James Hood and they moved to Clare, Iowa. Herman Bernard Determan lived the rest of his life with this son and died on March 27, 1890. John's wife died on January 11, 1892. John was a very progressive farmer. He sold his farm to his son, Bernard H. Determan, in 1908 and moved into Haverhill. He died there on March 15, 1923. He had two brothers, H. Henry Determan and Clement Determan, who came to New York in 1867. By 1876 the two were in Haverhill, but Clements later moved to Browns Valley, Minnesota.
