Death of Mr. James Sachs This Afternoon. Monday's Daily. The startling and shocking news of the death of Mr. James Sachs, of the firm of Sachs Bro's, merchant tailors, came like a bolt of lightning from a clear sky, this afternoon. So suddenly was he called away that few could realize that the one, who only a few short hours before was in full enjoyment, apparently of good health, was cold in the embrace of death. The call had come however, and James was the one to answer. This forenoon he was at his post in the store, and went to his dinner as usual. After eating he lay down upon a sofa to peruse a paper, and while lying upon his back a rupture of an enlarged blood vessel occurred and he died in a few seconds, before a physician could arrive. He was a young man respected by all who know him, and one whose character was above reproach. He had just passed the age of maturity, being but twenty-three years old and had the brightest prospects before him. Sad, indeed, is his taking off, and while the grief-stricken ones gather around and shed tears of sorrow over the loss of a loved one, we desire to extend to them for ourselves and on behalf of the people, who knew and loved him, the heartfelt sympathy of all. The funeral will probably be Wednesday or Thursday. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- James Sachs obituary (Source: The Licking County Genealogical Society's Library obituary file.) Date of death: 6 August, 1888. THE LAST SAD RITES Funeral Services Over the Remains of James Sachs Wednesday's Daily At two o'clock this afternoon the relatives and friends of the late James Sachs, whose sudden death caused such general sorrow, on Monday, gathered in and about the German Salem church to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed one. The little edifice was filled with mourners and sorrowing ones. The services were conducted by Rev. Kromer, who paid fitting eulogy in German, to the character of the deceased. He was followed by Rev. Gardner, of the M. E. Church, who spoke eloquently in English of the deceased's many virtues. The casket was covered with beautiful floral offerings, made and contributed by friends. The services over in the church, those present were permitted to look for the last time upon the face of the departed one, and then the lid closed over it forever. The remains were then taken in charge by the following pall bearers and removed to the hearse. Charles Warner, George Tabler, Frank Schaub, Tom Tabler, Will Christian and Henry Wulfhoop. The march to the silent city of the dead was then taken up the procession being very long, and the remains were then consigned to the ... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- James Sachs obituary (Source: The Granville Times Newspaper, Granville, Ohio, Thursday, August 9, 1888, page 1.) Mr. Sachs had been in failing health since he was injured in a railroad accident while traveling in the southwest in 1939 and his condition the past week had been serious. In January 1932 he was made assistant cashier, a position he held until his retirement July 1, 1940. Republican in politics, he served for eight years as a clerk of the county board of election, both parties recognizing his efficiency in handling the records and the annual abstract of votes, and his thorough knowledge of the election laws. More About KATHERINE GRAFF: Resided: 1916, West Church Street, Newark, Licking County, OH Notes for PHILLIP BOSWORTH SMYTHE: Phil Bosworth Smythe obituary (Source: The Licking County Genealogical Society's Library obituary file.) Date of death: 2 July, 1923. Phil B. Smythe, 53, one of the most prominent attorneys of Licking county, died Monday afternoon in Dayton after a short illness. His death was very unexpected. Mr. Smythe had been taking a prominent part in klan litigation and it was stated at the Smythe home in West Church street that Sunday morning at 2:20 o'clock some members of the Newark klan called and asked him to leave immediately for a conference. Monday afternoon three members of the Newark klan called at the Smythe home about 2:30 o'clock and announced that they had had word rom the Columbus klan headquarters that Mr. Smythe had died. It was several hours before Mrs. Smythe could learn where Mr. Smythe had died and a wire to the Columbus headquarters brought forth no information other than he had died in a neighboring town. A message from a Dayton newspaper this morning said that Smythe died there yesterday in a hospital. The family here has not learned the cause of his death. Later in the evening Criss Brothers learned that Mr. Smythe had died in Dayton and that the body had been removed to Berke and Sons, undertakers, at 127 East 50th street. The body was brought to Newark this afternoon by Criss Brothers. It is known that Smythe was in Columbus Sunday afternoon for he sent a message from that city directing postponement of a hearing in municipal court set for Monday and in which he was to appear as one of the attorneys. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mr. Smythe was one of the most prominent attorneys in Licking county and was well known in the law fraternity over the state. He took a prominent part in the recent Springfield and Minneaplis litigation of the Ku Klux Klan. He served two terms as prosecuting attorney of Licking county and also as city solicitor. While serving as prosecutor from 1908 to 1912 he took on active part in trail of the cases growing out of the 1910 riots and secured 27 convictions out of 32 indictments. He was of a family of barristers, his father and grandfather, George Bosworth Smythe both being prominent in the law profession. Born in this city December 20, 1869, Philip Bosworth Smythe was the son of Attorney B. G. Smythe. He attended the Newark schools and later took law at Denison university. He also read law in his father's office and was admitted to the bar March 16, 1899, and had followed the practice of his profession continuously since that time. He was first elected to the office of city solicitor shortly after his admittance to the bar. He also acted as city solicitor for the village of Utica. Mr. Smythe's grandfather, George B. Smythe, was a native of Saratoga county, New York, and he came to Newark in 1830. He died in 1898 at the age of 92 years. His father B. G. Smythe has practiced law for almost 60 years. Mr. Smythe was married twice. His first wife who was Miss Addie Slick died in 1904. His second wife was Miss Catherine Graff to whom he was married February 16, 1907. His mother who was Miss Sarah Atcherly of White Church, England, died several years ago. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and of the Newark lodge of Elks. Besides his widow, he is survived by his father, and one sister, Mrs. Lora Hervey, wife of Dr. J. L. Hervey of Martins Ferry and a nephew Brandt Smythe Hervey. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the home 244 West Church street. Rev. L. P. Franklin and Dr. C. L. Williams of Granville will officiate. Burial will be made in Cedar Hill cemetery. The Elks will conduct services at the home Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock. Members will meet in the club rooms at 7 o'clock and go to the Smythe home in a body. -------------------------------------------------------- More About PHILLIP BOSWORTH SMYTHE: Burial: 05 July 1923, Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Licking County, OH32 iv.
