Valentine Becker (who has always been known to his host of friends in this city

for many years as Valentine Baker) passed away at his home at the corner of

Seventh Street and Main Street Sunday noon from the effects of injuries

sustained by a fall several weeks ago.  The deceased was the son of Mr. and

Mrs. Philip Becker and he was born in Bicschheim, Bavaria, Germany on October

2, 1833.  He came as a young man, with his wife, to this country on November

17, 1861 and came to Newark, where he has since resided.  During his days of

activity, he was an expert stonemason, and one of the landmarks left by himself

is the present B&O Roundhouse in this city.

He leaves to mourn their loss a loving wife and three sons, Philip Baker of

this city, ex-member of the city council; Peter Baker of Mount Vernon and

William Baker of Sandusky; also three daughters, Mrs. H.A. (Katherine) Johns of

this city; Mrs Arthur (Rachel) Matthews of Mount Vernon and Mrs J.J.

(Caroline) Bausch of this city besides two brothers and twenty-four

grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.  The funeral will be held from

the German Evangelical Church in South Fifth Street Tuesday afternoon at 2

o'clock.  Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. V. Philipinea Backer, widow of the late Valentine Backer died at her home,

210 West Main Street at 5:45 Sunday afternoon, just twelve weeks after the

death of her husband, on April 2nd.  The deceased was formerly Miss Philipinea

Graef, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Graef and was born in this city 74 years

10 months and 20 days ago and has spent her entire life in this city.  She has

been an invalid for the past few months, but about seven weeks ago she became

bedfast and has been gradually sinking since, until death came to relieve her

suffering.

She leaves to mourn their loss three sons, Philip Backer, ex-member of the city

council, Peter Backer of Mt. Vernon and William Backer of Sandusky besides

three daughters Mrs. H. A. (Katherine) Johns of the city, Mrs. Arthur (Rachel)

Mathews of Mt. Vernon, Mrs. J. J. (Caroline) Bausch of this city and 24

grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  The funeral will be held Wednesday

at 2 p.m. from the German Evangelical Church in South 5th Street.  Burial will

be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Henry J. Johns.   Mrs Katie G. Johns, 83, widow of Henry J. Johns died

early Friday morning in her home, 221 West Main Street.

Mrs. Johns lived alone and was found dead in bed Friday afternoon by her

daughter, Mrs. Earl Dove Sr. of Utica, who came to the home to take her mother

shopping.  While Mrs. Johns had been in failing health, she was up and about

and in her usual health when she retired Thursday night.

Born in Newark June 1, 1862, she was the daughter of Valentine and Philipine

Baker and had resided here all of her life.  Mrs. Johns was a member of St.

Johns Evangelical Reformed Church; Pythian Sisters and Past Chiefs; Royal

Neighbors; Pocahontas Lodge; Social Friends and the Women's Relief Corps.

Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Dove and three sons, Harry P. Johns of

Thornport, Frank S. Johns, Columbus, Indiana and Carl J. Johns of Newark; also

Twenty-one Grandchildren; seventeen Great Grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. John

Bausch of Newark and Arthur Mathews of Mt. Vernon.  Her husband preceded her in

death in 1924 and four sons are also deceased.

The body will be returned to the family home this afternoon and funeral

services will be held Monday at 10 A.M. in the home.  Rev. Louis H. Lammers

will conduct the service and burial will be made in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Nellie R. Edwards

        Funeral services will be at 3:30 p. m. Saturday in the chapel of Ross Henderson Funeral Home for Mrs. Nellie R. Edwards, 80, of 50 S. Williams St.  The Rev. Robert E. Gainnes will officiate.  Cremation will follow the service.

        Mrs. Edwards died Wednesday evening in Licking County Memorial Hospital.

        She was born Feb. 2, 1888 in Newark to John P. and Mary Frye Baker.

        She was a life resident of Newark and a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

        Surviving are her husband, Emmett Edwards, whom she married in 1913; two daughters, Mrs. Helen M. Bishop of Newark and Mrs. Donald W. Myers of Heath; a brother, Clarence Baker of Buckeye Lake; two sisters: Mrs. Marie Beal and Mrs. Aaron Richards, both of Newark, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

        Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. Friday in the funeral home.

Emmett Minor Edwards

        Memorial services for Emmett Minor Edwards, 98, formerly of 50 S. Williams St., will take place 2 p.m. Monday at the Neal Avenue United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rolland G. Perkins officiating.

        Mr. Edwards died Saturday morning at the Newark Health Care Centre.  He was born April 4, 1889 to the late George and Maggie Idessa (Bell) Edwards.

        He was a member of the Neal Avenue United Methodist Church; ACME Lodge 554 F&AM; Scottish Rite 32nd degree; and the United Commercial Travelers.

        His wife, Nellie (Baker) Edwards, died Sept. 11, 1968.

        He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Virginia) Myers of Newark; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.  A daughter, brother and sister are deceased.

        There are no calling hours.  Henderson, VanAtta and Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Seriously ill since January, Fred P. Baker, 69, Patternmaker, formerly employed

at North American Aircraft the past 19 years, died at 3:30 PM Wednesday in his

home, 135 Grant Street.  Prior to his association with Curtis-Wright and North

American Aircraft, Columbus, he spent 33 years with the Wehrle Company.  He

retired last January.  The son of J. Phil Baker and Mary (Fry) Baker, he was

born December 28, 1891 in Newark.  A life-long member of St. John Evangelical

Reformed Church he also was a life member and past exalted ruler of Newark

Lodge Elks; a 50 year member of the Moose Lodge and past sachem of Order of

Redman.  Surviving are his widow the former Goldie Jackway, whom he married in

1915, on daughter Mrs. W. K. Willey of Newark, two grandchildren, one brother,

Clarence Baker of Buckeye Lake, three sisters, Mrs. Emmett Edwards, Mrs. Aaron

Richard and Mrs. Roy Beall all of Newark.  Three brothers and one sister are

deceased.  Services will be 2 P.M. Saturday.  Interment in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Henry V. Johns, 51, former Newark resident, died suddenly Friday in his home in

Cincinnati.  Details of his death have not been received by the family here.

He had made his home here for several years where he was an employe of the

Goldsmith Supply House.

He was the oldest son of the late H.J. Johns and Mrs. Katherine Johns of 221

West Main street.  Surviving are his widow, four sons and three daughters; his

mother, four brothers Harry, William and Carl Johns of the home here.  Frank of

Columbus, Ind., and a sister, Mrs. Catherine Dove of Utica.

The body will arrive here Sunday night and will be taken to the home, 221 West

Main street.  Funeral services will be held there Monday morning at 10 o'clock.

Rev. Louis Lammers will officiate and burial will be made in Cedar Hill

cemetery.  Funeral directors, Fitzsimmons company.

        Mrs. Leslie B. Owens

        Taken suddenly ill Monday, Mrs. Marie G. Owens, 65, wife of Leslie B. Owens, rear 199 N. Gay St., was admitted to Newark Hospital after 3 p. m. and died at 1:05 a. m. Tuesday.  Her condition when she was admitted was regarded as serious.

        Mrs. Owens, the former Marie G. Thomas, was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Cahill) Thomas, born May 26, 1892, in Newark.

        For a number of years she was employed in the etching department of the A. H. Heisey & Co., and retired in 1952.  Her first husband, Clyde Johns, died in 1919, and a son Paul Johns is also deceased.

        Surviving are her husband, Leslie B. Owens, whom she married in 1952; one son, Gerald Johns of Newark; also three grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Herzog, Helen Thomas and Mrs. Besse Davies, all of Newark.  Two brothers, Leo and Robert Thomas preceded her in death.  For several years Mrs. Owens and her sisters were residents of the Jutlew Apartments.

        Mrs. Owens was a member of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament and the Royal Neighbors.

        The funeral will be held at 9 a. m. Thursday with a requiem mass in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament and burial will be made in St. Joseph Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Egan Funeral Home.

       Utica, Sept. 1 -- Mrs. Helen Louise Shinn, 22, wife of Wayne Shinn, died suddenly Saturday at 2 p.m. in her home in Carey street of a heart attack.

       Mrs. Shinn, who had been working part time in the Dunlap grocery, was in her usual health during the morning while at work, and was stricken suddenly as she rested on a couch in her home after returning home for lunch.

       Her death followed an attack of rheumatic fever suffered four years ago.

       While Mrs. Shinn had lived most of her life in Utica, she was born Aug. 4, 1927, in Newark, the daughter of Earl and Katherine (Johns) Dove.

       Surviving are her husband, Wayne Shinn, whom she married in April, 1946; her parents of Utica; one brother, Earl Dove, Jr., of Danville; also the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward G. Dove of Utica.

       Mrs. Shinn was graduated from Utica high school in 1943.  She was a member of the Methodist church of Utica; Order of Eastern Star and Eastern Star circle.

       The body will be returned to the home today from the C. C. Law and Son funeral home.  Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the home, conducted by Rev. William Lockard.  Burial will be made in South Lawn cemetery.

        Donald Wesley Myers 70, of 1827 Brairwood Lane in Newark, Ohio formerly of Heath, Ohio died at his home Friday morning.  Born in Newark on June 26, 1921 he was the son of the late Bernard Myers and Lillian (Ball) Myers Humphrey.  Former member of the Heath Planning Commission, served in U. S. Army during WWII, he was a retired buyer for Diamond Power Co. in Lancaster, Ohio.

        Survived by: Wife, Virginia (Edwards) Myers.  Two daughters: Mrs. Bill (Shirley) Braunbeck, Newark; Mrs. Terry (Marilyn) Kincaid, Newark; four grandchildren, Jill and Chad Braunbeck, Alicia and Alan Kincaid.  One brother is deceased.

        Mr. Willey died April 1, 1992, in Licking Memorial Hospital.  He was born Sept. 13, 1915, in Newark, to the late Willard C. and Sophia (Deutsch) Willey.

        He was retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas Technical Center after 41 years of service.  He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during World War II from 1943-1945 in the Corps of Engineers.  He was a lifetime member of the Woodside Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Sunday School superintendent, elder and a trustee.  He was a past member of the Fiberglas 25-Year Club and a member of the Newark Masonic Lodge 97, F&AM.

        Surviving are his wife of 53 years, E. Eileen (Baker) Willey; one daughter, Rowena Willey Ashton of Columbus; one brother, Robert E. Willey of California; two sisters: Kathryn Snelling and Rachel Honenberger, both of Newark and four granddaughters.

        James W. "Pidge" Branscome

        Aug. 26, 1924 - May 14, 2000

 

        A graveside service for James W. "Pidge" Branscome, 75, of Newark, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Wilson Cemetery.

        Mr. Branscome, a 1942 graduate of Newark High School, died May 14, 2000, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center operated by Hospice of Central Ohio.  He was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Newark, to the late Walter B. and Mary F. (Reel) Branscome.

        Mr. Branscome was retired from the B&O Railroad where he worked as a dispatcher for 33 years.  He was a U. S. Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre, including the invasion of Guam.

        Mr. Branscome was a member of the American Legion Post 1060, Phi Sigma Businessmen's Fraternity, Licking County Old Timers Athletic Association, B&O Steamers, and American Train Dispatchers Association.

        He is survived by his wife, Marjorie R. (Johns) Branscome of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Kathy Branscome of Pataskala; step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Dee and Bobby Breeden of Newark; grandchildren, Rich (Faith) Lehman, Mike (Tracy) Lehman, Carrie (Nick) Roberts, and Ammy (Jimmy) Ricciardo; and 12 great-grandchildren.

        In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother.
